- Can fruit flies teach us something about the way our senses impact our own aging process? Dr. Christi Gendron believes so, and she uses humor to explain how recent research with Drosophila melanogaster, also known as the common fruit fly, is changing our understanding of the ways in which sensory systems impact the aging process. The processes identified are similar to those found in our own bodies and are the basis for developing therapies that promote healthy aging in humans. #AgingResearch #FruitFlyScience #SensoryAging #ScienceOfAging #ResearchDiscoveries #DrosophilaMelanogaster
Dr. Christi Gendron is a molecular biologist researching how sensory events shape our health and lifespan. She holds a PhD from Imperial College London and is a Research Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan. Her work has been supported by the National Institutes of Health, the Animal Models for the Social Dimensions of Health and Aging Research Network, and the Glenn Foundation for Medical Research. In addition to her academic publications in top scientific journals, Christi has written for The Conversation and has been a speaker at many international conferences. Her work has been covered by The New York Times, BBC, National Geographic, The Guardian, and the New Scientist among others.
Dr. Christi Gendron, a neurobiologist researching the neural underpinnings of how sensory perception impacts physiology and lifespan in Drosophila melanogaster, believes her findings could have important implications for our own health and longevity. All those who want to LIVE more should LOVE more.
Short answer to your question: yes
Ppl who just want the short answer hardly resolves anything
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Be present in the moment, great speech!
Very interesting study on the flies, removing the dead from their sight made them live longer. Good vid 👏
Thank you share so interesting talk❤😃
Thanks for this lecture Christi . I’m English learner thanks very understandable
Yeah I don’t think merely witnessing or experiencing something in a sensory sense affects anything nearly as much as one’s perception and interpretation and reaction to said thing.
Perception, interpretation, and reaction is a part of the experience.
Correct response format is: "I agree, "
Thank me later
Christi is completely charming
This was interesting- I wish it was a longer.
That's w... Sorry.
I used to leave dead mosquitoes on my body in the hopes that it might repel other mosquitoes away. A friend of mine convinced me that the mosquitoes are more likely to smell the blood and go into a feeding frenzy but I'm glad that there might be some truth to that after all!

grazie
I wonder if they are sensing it through the olfactory as well.
We know that for many years.
That's y i feel old
Really?
Cool!
I'm going on Amazon and getting one of those Bug Salt Guns....
Still waiting for the day we get to hear Ted themselves speak...
Jacksonville, Florida????
Apparently...
@@annagulm.t.981 It's not apparent to me. That's why I asked. I just reads Jacksonville. There are many states with Jacksonville as a city. Not just Florida.
@@MamaMilkBubbles oh, I know only abt this city in Florida as I was there long time ago...

Question: When a fly saw a dead fly, it died sooner than the ones who didn’t see a dead fly. Other flies were also seeing other things. So the act of sensing is not killing. It is the negative experience that reduces lifespan. Stress kills, no?
Well I think in humans it's not really the life span exactly that is affected but it's more psychological. One begins to loose sense of what interesting about life and falls into unhealthy lifestyle...
So no more funerals. Got it.

Who is here after sanghmitra Mishra polls story 😂like thoko
Why is it not translated into Arabic??
Why are you taking about flies? 🐝
because they are obseravable and recordable by some one who can see their life span , repeatedly “ because of the privilege of having a longer life span as human beings. - research needs multiple documentation
@@neelumahendra4695 Thanks, that makes sense 😀
