  • Mariah Carey is nothing short of a legend! But when digging into her voice (whistle register, vocal range, belts, etc.), there's a bit of a dark side that can sometimes get in the way of the celebration. So let's take a moment to talk about that before we deep dive.

Absolutely agree on how people is extra harsh when they judge Mariah Carey. Is her voice in worse shape now? Yes. But calling her bottom of the barrel wjen comparing her to 90s Mariah is kinda unfair. Put anyone besides 90s Mariah. Make them sing and perform songs like Vision of Love, We Belong Together, Emotions in a set list. They are going to look a fool, and mind you, Mariah is older, had children, and has a damaged voice from the get-go. Calling her the worst singer ever when she can't hit E5s after E5s, switching from her belt to whistle in one breath, and maintaining a 4-octave range in just a song is a low blow. Her voice is lower now, she's more comfortable singing notes below A4, and her whistle is still intact, just not that fluid that she can hit an F7 whenever ahe wants. And in terms of her success, she only looks like a "flop" when you compare her to her peak. Even at her lowest chartings, she has careers 90% of the industry dreams to have
TLDR: Give Mariah her flowers and a break

The hard part about analyzing mariah is that you can never fully track the trends in her style. Usually if you push it far enough, it always traces back to her debut. Like you touched on, something even as simple as her breathy tone can be found on her debut. Everything she has ever touched on like gospel, r&b influence, hip hop collab (using herself as the rapper), etc. is found on that first album. The first two basically cover all her influences (and there are so many). She is masterful and blending all of them into cohesive pieces of work that it actually blurs the lines when trying to dissect it - you have to know just as much about her influences as she does. She is an artist and her personality is infused in everything. Even songs like dreamlover found on the most pop record in her career, were formed on the foundation of a doo wap sample. She is so involved in everything she does it's hard to capture everything.

I love her mid range. She can BELT those mid notes when she wants to, but she can also sing them in a breathy way when she wants to as well. I don’t know of any other singer who is a belter and can also sing airy, most singers can either belt or sing airy

Yeah I’m conflicted about that too- cause did she have to sing emotions in such a high key? No, and it still would’ve been one of the hardest songs to sing anyway. Mariah probably wasn’t thinking about the effects of singing so many difficult songs with chesty upper belts, and I don’t think she should be criticized for it now, as newer singers have learned from her

Mariah said it best about her voice her voices like a rainbow, has many different shades and colors to it and she uses it to paint a picture for emotion in her songs. That’s a beauty of songwriting. She manipulated melodies with different parts of her voice. She’s a true Studio singer, when it comes to songwriting and using her voice to the full capacity, she’s the only artist that showed her range from top to bottom. I’m pretty much all her records most artist you find one album that shows off their vocal range. I may be the second, but on every album that Mariah has made, she has showed you whyshe has the songbird supreme no matter what stage her voices in I would always give her that respect

Yes she had nodules but regardless, it's nonsense for people to forget that the voice is a muscle. It will change over time, even if it's fit as possible it's not going to be at 60 what it was at 20. Those rare exceptions to the rule should not be viewed as the norm, they are EXCEPTIONS. Best thing you can do is adapt and lean into the changes.

ODB, the pop diva feat. rapper wouldn't be popularized, so many aspects of the music industry would be different, even Kpop! that's a new whole style that follows the Mariah's recipe of pop feat rap. She's not the one who "created" it, but she made it popular and shaped the music industry to what it is now.... well not now cuz tik tok f*cked everything up!

  • @mclambangel
    @mclambangel 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

good video, people don't understand how difficult it is to sing with vocal nodules, that's why I think she is very criticized, I have a hiatus of the vocal folds and there are days when I don't even have half of my vocal range (and what I suffer from is minimal compared to vocal nodules), everyone expects Mariah to sound like she did in the 90s but the reality is that her voice has aged, which is normal, even so she can sing many notes, I think the solution would be to rearrange her songs to that adapt to her current vocal range, for example I would love a 100% acoustic concert by Mariah, I think that would give her a lot of room to improvise with her voice.

I think they told her not to remove her nodules because the surgery back then could leave scars that can change your voice drastically. This happened to Julie Andrews' voice after she had her nodules removed and she lost her majority of her vocal range. New technology and medical advancement improved this procedure tho since I think Adele and Justin Timberlake recently got it done and their voices sound the same for the most part.

You hit the nail on the head. Her vocal abilities NOW cannot erase 3 decades of a barrier breaking vocals. She is quite literally one of the greatest vocalists of our time and her pen is legendary. The general public are very much "What have you done for me lately" mindset. It's sad.

One of the best compare & contrasts you can do to showcase Then & Now = Take 2 performances of a song like 'Hero' - one from the '93-'95 era & one from her recent Vegas shows in 2024. Both are very good performances for their times but you can really see the difference. So yeah, you weren't entirely wrong with that first point... however, the more accurate point is Mariah now songs with a [VERY] thin/shallow voice/tone.

  • @Rasfa

What she can't do live is generally related to the fact that in the studio there's a lot of stacking and stitching together different lines like, for example, the transition between the bridge and the final chorus in Butterfly.

She's just really amazing. If Mariah was gifted with a healthy vocal chord like Patti she would have dominated the industry in a crazy way. Probably she would have been several times more successful than what she is today and possibly a totally different music industry than what we have now.

I think I speak for alot of lambs when I say I'm more than just a fan, we feel like family. Having said that, we appreciate her as a person for her surviving the industry and her personal trials and tribulations. So we appreciate her for still putting out music for us as lambs, not just so she could achieve commercial success. She could have retired long time ago however she still makes music for us and because she loves her craft. Having said that, I will support every album she puts out. I know her voiced changed a bit when she started the process of getting pregnant with fertility treatments. She has never said this however you can infer she had the choice of having children and risking vocal degradation or continue life as it was. She even had a miscarriage during this process. I'm sure many women would go ahead with having kids and being happy. She had already achieved the pentacle of success by that point. To answer your question, I always have these facts in the back of my head when I listen to Mariah these days. No she doesn't belt like she used to however she is still Mariah Carey, she can still hit the whistles and emote. Yes, I do enjoy the later music, it's just different. It goes to show you how much talent this woman has. She still has the ability to capture an audience and sell out multiple arenas on her tours. Mariah is one of those singers where you have to listen deeply to her music and listen to the lyrics, she is deep. I would urge you to read her memoir the Meaning of Mariah Carey if you really want to know about her. Her musicality is shown off in this video. She touches people with her music. Michael Jordon was in tears toward the end. th-cam.com/video/vS1gwGKoD0Y/w-d-xo.html

Mariah Carey once said that her voice is not high pitched like Whitney Houston's. Tommy Mottola and his record label almost forced Mariah Carey to sing the same vocal tone as Houston (Arista Records was the direct competition of Columbia Records) and that brought her consequences that she is paying for today, apart from the fact that the famous nodules were detected on her vocal cords and that, according to her, allow her to have her current tone of voice and that is why she has not yet had an operation on her vocal cords. Let's see, come on, it's not a blessed mystery why she sings like this today and not like when she was 19 years old, Hello, times change and so do we as humans, and believe me, nothing will be the same as the years go by. Mariah is a very good singer and songwriter, but she can indulge in singing her good old songs however she wants, period!

Mariah's voice is not as high as whitney but still a very high voice. I don't think they forced her to sing since she writes her own songs, and her songs became EVEN HIGHER in albums where she was not in sony anymore. So, no. The only thing tommy forced her was to stay away from RnB and Hip Hop. The consequences she's paying are the ones of not taking care of her voice, nodules surgerg is and was very secure. If she was afraid of loosing whistle, she could just re-learn them, is not something very difficult.

Mariah Carey going on American idol it made her image unflattering and put her in a position where it made her basic like everybody else at one time her image what's more popular than her music in my opinion. But that show American idol all money ain't good money.
But I will add one more thing I definitely think her black lineage gave her voice for music.

The main problem with her nodules is that it has made her lose a lot of range and every time she is performing she can't speak for 3 days straight before that when she is really hoarse her singing can be really bad

I don't necessarily think that "Mariah carey cant sing". I just feel like she didn't adapt, and accept the fact that her voice was deepening, and she couldn't sing songs in certain keys anymore, YET, she stilled tried, which is more than great, im glad that she had courage to keep on trying, the only problem is that she was damaging her voice....I saw a video recently of her talking about emancipation of mimi concert parl 19, and she sounded great! because she finally embraced her natural mature tone, and she sounded fluid! i wish we could have seen more matureriah, there is no telling how great some of her lives could have been if she sung in that tone!

No u are right she stoped belting she said it herself, she is more whispery now and she stopped singing from the midrange , I believe because her voice could not take it. She also has not toured as much either especially compared to Whitney. She for some
    Reason also lypsynced so much.
