Love NYC--lived there for much of my 30's. Strand was never a favorite, too overwhelming and big. I only went there if I could not find a book elsewhere. There are so many great little stories in NYC that I frequented. I am a big used book buyer and love traveling New England and all the old Book Barns and dusty old bookstores. My favorite bookstores in my many travels are Livraria Lello in Lisbon--you have to buy a ticket to get in and it is so beautiful but as far as selection and just a joy being in is Topping and Company in Edinburgh. It is incredible. So glad you enjoyed your trip to New York.
I always say The Strand is my Disneyland. When I've gone in the past, I've bought a bunch of books and they were mailed from the store at book rate and arrived a few days after I got home, instead of worrying about carrying them home
I go to NYC at least once a year, and the Strand is a mandatory stop. Near me is the Harvard Bookstore in Cambridge, MA, which is great and off course the Brattle Book Shop is also great. On my bucket list was New Directions in San Francisco, and Daunt in London. Both did not disappoint when I visited a few years ago. When I go back to Portugal, Livraria Bertrand in Lisbon is always a required stop. It is the oldest bookshop in the world. Fortunately, they sell online and ship to the US, which is great.
"The French Lieutenant's Woman" is really good. The movie is excellent too, with Jeremy Irons and Meryl Streep. I didn't love "The Collector" but I enjoyed "The Magus", which was extremely weird.
I've been to Powell's multiple times because we lived in Portland for years during college and weren't far from it. Absolutely loved the Year of Magical Thinking. ❣ I almost suggested it for you after my reread last year! I love the Murdle book - looks fabulous! I'm a puzzler too!
Oooh so lovely! It seems like it would be amazing, but also incredibly overwhelming. I would not want to go in the heat! There is a big charity book sale that had to be held in a gym without AC in summer a couple times, it was no fun even without it being a tight stuffy space like a shop
Nice haul! Hope you had a great trip. I live in NJ so it wouldn't be far, but have never made it to The Strand. Looks a little overwhelming. Have not read any of those books, but actually have The French Lieutenant's Woman on my list for this month.
I was just at the Strand a week ago. I was immediately overwhelmed, and as it came at the end of a long walking-filled day, I knew my partner wasn’t up for a long stay. So I gave it a cursory once-over and blew it off.
Hi! The Year of Magical Thinking is not about someone who is sick . It’s about the famous writer, Joan Didion’s husband dying (in front of her) and how she deals with that in the following year.
Aww thank you! I love the look of them but they have a reflection that bothers me! I am probably the only one that see it but it becomes all I can see!
I have two bookstore bucket list. One is Parnassus in Nashville that's owned by Ann Patchett. I have actually called and ordered signed books. I also want to go to Louise Erdrich's bookstore in Minneapolis.
Don't really have a bookstore bucket list, but I do miss the store I would visit while on our family cottage vacations. A cramped, musty, little fire-trap that provided some dusty gems over the years. To be honest, these days I just want to stay home and have the books brought to me. Not community minded of me, I know.
I loved American Fiction as well! The whole woke-thing was really hilarious. And it's amazing to me that Everett wrote that book more than 2 decades ago...
I've been to The Strand and hope to go to Powell's at some point.

Brilliant!
I didn't know they could ship to me!! oh wow!
I hope to do road trips based on indie bookstores! I've been saving them all on my IG account.

New York has some incredible bookstores. Love The Strand. Love that you were able to go. The fourth floor is my favourite for rare books. 😊💙
I did go up there to see if they had the last 2 Margaret Atwood's that I need! They did not :(
Bookshop bucket list:
Atlantis Books in Santorini
Livraria Lello in Portugal
Libreria Acqua Alta in Venice
Addyman Books (Wales?)
Montague Bookmill
That is a great list!

The Collector was TWISTED! I haven't read the Magus yet.
I am going into NYC in a few weeks. I’m hoping to go to the Strand.
It is worth it!

“Legend born” is great!!! I enjoyed it, and I don’t typically like fantasy.

New glasses?
I love the pink on you!
Thank you! The glare always gets me :)

I read Erasure at the end of May, it is really good. An unusual plot-line. I must look out for the film.
The film is fantastic! I am really looking forward to reading the book.
My bucket list bookstores are Parnassus in Nashville and, of course, Shakespeare and Company in Paris!
Shakespeare and Company is a great one! I was surprised that they queue people up outside. They also specifically say "no filming"!
Love The Strand! And your pink glasses, they look so cute on you!

@@MsReadsAlot Aw that sucks. Not worth wearing them if they bother you, even if they’re cute.
