Very nice tips. Thank you for sharing
Thanks for visiting
i would like to add as a reminder to many people on kayaks that practicing self rescue is really important. its difficult to imagine that you will end up in the water and that your kayak will be upsidedown, BUT IT WILL HAPPEN! if the first time for you is out in the wind and chop and some current, you could end up in real danger, as moo moo ajushi is warning us about here. please consider sacrificing a day out on the water fishing for a day out in a cove practicing self rescue. i was very grateful i had learned because once i got dumped by a power boat who was traveling too fast and turned a corner. the wake got me in an unexpected way.
Yes, going in the drink is the part of the game. We need to be prepare for it. Thanks for the reminder.
Moo.... THANKS for caring enough to provide this important message. I've learned a lot of these lessons the hard way too in my nearly 20 years of kayak fishing. ARW is no joke and can't be underestimated. I was luckily there to help out when the two kayakers flipped at the end of the 2nd wall.
Thanks for stepping up and helping them. Also, thanks for paving the road and teaching us about kayak fishing and safety so we can spread the love.
Great wind tips, totally agree with your summary. I got rolled this past April 2023, 1st time ever in a Hobie PA14 no less!!
The occurrence was due to a boat wake, charter boat (not to be named here) to be specific. They were headed back north, as I was heading back to Oyster Point launch. Passed 30' away from me, all passengers in the charter cabin. The boat's huge wake was going one way, the wind waves the other. I made it over the 1st wake wave ok, the 2nd wake met opposite wind wave and over I went.
Charter boat just kept on going.
Self-rescued as not my 1st time rolling a yak, but the SHOCK of feeling that cold water on my face almost made me panic. My outer clothes soaked almost immediately, my farmer john wetsuit underneath, LP did their job. No gear was lost as all was secured as I was heading back in.
Yikes. Glad to hear nothing was lost and sounds like you didn't hurt yourself. What is the LP you are referring to?

Great tips, one of the first things I learned with my 1st kayak was how to flip it and self rescue...way different experience with a large kayak weighing almost 100lbs, plus gear.
Yup self-rescue is a must learn
The wind and wind waves at oyster point in the afternoon are way serious. I’ve never been more winded on my Hobie. Almost didn’t make it back 😅
Even the power boats have hard time against the big wind waves. Glad you made it back.
Thanks for the tips! Good to know to be safe
Thanks Steph
There's an old saying that time and the tide waits for no man. And in this case the wind too. Always be aware and plan ahead. Good video MooMoo.
Thanks
I remember when I first fished ARW I got caught in the afternoon wind and ripping current. Honestly, I pretty scared since the guy I went out with already went back in and conditions got super bad. It took me almost 2 hours to get back. From there on, I always made a point to check the wind and tide forecast as well set a rule of thumb to be back in by noon. Definitely good to share with those new in this sport!
This reminds of the time it took me 2 hours to get back to the harbor at HMB on the Lifetime kayak. It was my 2nd time in the Ocean.
nice info I suppose some can be applied to other bodies of water...know your waters perhaps best said. great info thank you!!
Thank you
Thank you for the great safety tips.
Thank you Sir
the tide turn is not a joke... i remember i had to paddle in on outgoing tide and it was very difficult.. at that time i did not know to paddle inside the wall. was the last time i took kayak out there..
Yeah ARW tide can be very strong on big swing days. I know so many people who had a difficult time getting back.
pulled a yaker out off coyote point on a really sloppy day earlier this year. guy was wearing chest waders. we barely got him in the boat and nearl swamped dragging him over the transom but all ended well.
Thank you so much helping out the kayaker 🤙🤙
One more thing to avoid when you’re at ARW is the fisherman on the rocks. One time the wind and current picked up and I was not paying attention and I got snagged with another fisherman line from shore. I ended up cutting the line and getting a little scraped up on the rocks there
Yikes. Glad to hear was just a scrape.
all great tips from experience. and if worse comes to worse get on you radio and ask for help. us boaters will help you evertime.
Yes sir.
The wind and current gets nuts at ARW sometimes. If you are north of the wall on outgoing it is a bear getting back. Whitecaps on the bay is not fun either. Thanks for the tips, Moo! See you out there!
Thanks
Thanks for the safety tips Moo. Don't let it happen you you or others. Learn and safe fishing.
Good job Moo. We can all use this reminder from time to time!
Thanks. Not a sexy topic but I want people to be safe.
During TLC tournament it took me forever to come back. I overshot the launch when using the current to come back and had to fight the current. Had the boat following me for a good chunk of time 😅 I made it though
Haha. Glad you made it back.
@@MooMooOutdoors was crazy hearing of all the people flipping out there. Thank you for the safety message!
Great video my friend
Thank you! Cheers!
Hey Moo, thanks for this video. Do you recommend any spots to practice self rescue in the bay area? I'm guess some may practice at local lakes, but wondering if you've practice in other safe spots?
I personally just practice at a local lake once a year. When I practice, I like to do it multiple times until I get tired.
Nice job! Great tips! Thanks for sharing, you are an Ambassador to the entire sport of kayak fishing, not just a safety advocate.
Thanks 😁
I know in and out in ARW. But outside the gate, I flipped kayak many times when surf landing, Human against nature, never win😂
Flipping is a part of the game, especially in the surf zone
