AWD Golfs have had a special place in our hearts since the first generation R32 debuted in 2002, and the 2017 Golf R is one of the best all-around cars available today. In stock form its 2.0-liter turbocharged 4 cylinder makes 292HP/280TQ, holds 5 people, gets 30MPG highway, and will hit 60MPH in less than 5 seconds. This one, however, makes nearly 100HP more, at 382HP. We don't get the 5-door Audi RS3 in America, but this could be a decent substitute.
MODS:
EuroDyne Stage 2 tune
Eurodyne DSG tune
Full Exhaust
Turbo blanket

Great video, Zack gets it. The Golf's numbers don't impress teenagers in comments sections, but in the real world where adults live and drive, the Golf R is simply one of the best cars on the road.
The internet has broken everyone. We see too many HP numbers so 382 doesn't seem like "a lot". "I have seen X car making 500 and Y car has 700 so this is slow." This car is not slow. This, to me, is the right amount of usable power for the street and track. It's very fast and usable all over the road. For most people, a car with 5,6,700HP requires you to go hunting for a big straightaway to enjoy it, which misses out on a lot the fun of driving. ZK
I love that sleeper stats as well
this is absolutely not a vehicle that an adult would drive (at least not one lacking stunted development). any car that drones this LOUD is for teenagers and zit-faced loners only. i would be happy to see it driven off the cliff.
@@darvillebo - While I feel you're trying awfully hard to get people to react to you (trolling), I do agree the drone is a bit much.
I'm looking at getting the exhaust done for my Black, 2017 DSG R and that drone is a big concern. For now, I'm thinking of doing a resonator delete just to try it out.
It's tough to make a 4 cylinder sounds really good. While X person may love the sound Y person may hate it. And you can generalize over all 4 cylinders and get a fairly large group of car guys on both sides (love/hate).
Ultimately, if you buy a sporty 4 cylinder you're going to find lots of people who don't like the sound it makes. But while I like the sound of V8's and V12s like any car guy, I don't want a big hulking waste of space which costs me my first child in gas. That seems like an even more stupid idea.
lostinbravado check out Armytrix, I have a Golf 6 GTI and it’s super loud when the exhaust is open but really quiet when it’s closed.
Bone stock 2017 Golf R here. Had it for 2 years now. Still puts a smile on my face everytime I see it and sit in it.
nothing wrong being bone stock, probably better reliability also

Super glad to see our downpipe getting put to good use Shawn! We def saw upwards of 330 wheel on our own stage 2 Golf R, they are indeed a crazy little car. Keep on driving!!
My 2016 Golf R dsg with turbo back exhaust, intake, and intercooler running 93 and meth. Ran 11.6@117 1/4 and 142mph in the 1/2 mile. 35,000 miles after mods and not a single issue. Love the car.

@@michaelgomez4994 and you can actually drive it in all seasons wow
Michael Gomez on a 19” wheel and street tire? Doubt it. And 122ci vs 350ci where are you going with this? If you want to compare expenses vs performance or import vs domestic. I also have an 06 Colorado that I picked up for $300. Running a cam/springs LQ4 with an s480, 80e with a jakes stage 2 rebuild, billet 2800 stall, 8.8 ford rear with strange axles and 9” ends. Weighs about 3300lbs and cracks off high 9s all day. Total cost $3500. The stock golf was over 10x that price. Ask me if I’m mad about it.
Michael Galliano sure pal but it’s a 5k car with maybe 5k in it. You can drive a radial in Cali so your fine to. Besides it’s only 5 lug nuts...
Zack: "Are you planning to keep this a long time? Or are you itching to get something else?"
Shawn: "Well I'm itching for more power."
Zack: "Yeah. You definitely need it. We're going SUPER slowly right now."

Fantastic video. I owned a modified '15 Golf R and loved every minute of it. Took mods like a champ, made easy power, and best of all it was still practical to drive. To anyone new to the scene, do yourself a favor, and ignore the kids bashing VW in the comments--it's easy to put VW in a box because of random shit you've read online. Being a former R owner, and owning two VW GTIs before that, I've had very few issues with any of my cars for 10 years of VW ownership. Can't wait to get into one again. Thanks ZK!
Realistically how does the DSG and overall reliability hold up over 5-10 years? I can't really afford a new one and I am used to Toyota/Lexus level of reliability. I love the shape of the Golf and the power, though the longer term ownership issues are a concern for me.
@@gavinr9107 Its a bullet proof transmission. My 2012 GTI (120k miles) never has issues, mechanical or otherwise, and never slipped gears even when I modded and tuned. There is a maintenance that's due every 40k for a DSG flush so you will want to make sure the previous owner(s) had this performed. Aside from this you have no need to worry about a used DSG!

I have a 2016 GTI with full stage 2 mods, and my dad has a CTS Boss 600 Golf R, probably making around 400+ to the wheels. These cars will burn down 90% of what's on the roads, and get you from point A to B in comfort and style. The MK7 GTI/R were an evolution of the performance Golf line.
You know the car is good when you smile and can't stop from laughing after the first 7 seconds you drive it.
By the way, good job Zack; these One Takes are getting better and better!

@ckatlinga not even close, these new Gen 2.0t Gen 3 motors are really strong for what they are. 400hp isnt much for it at all

I almost bought a Mk VI Golf R about 5 years ago, but I scared my wife with it on the test drive. These cars are so easy to drive FAST; as soon as you get the thing going it becomes so intuitive and within a few seconds you and the car just seem to say subconsciously "okay, we're doing this" and then you're going through tight Esses at super-legal speeds.
This and the new G70 are at the top of my list for next vehicle purchase. The APR Plus tune that takes you to 357 hp while keeping the six year warranty is the deal of the century.
Go g70. 400hp out of the box With a warranty. Trading my q60 red sport for one this spring
Would be going for the 2.0T with the manual rather the the V6..
@@IReahpZz G70 can't even keep up with my stage 2 GTI.

I had a 2017 R APR stage 2, DSG tune and supporting mods. Last month it was at the dealer for warranty work. They totaled it on a test drive after the repair. Anyways, these things rip with a remapped ECU. Where I live, it was nearly untouchable on the street.
I love my MK7 R with the JB4, it does everything so damn well
Golf R is my jam. The only cars that I'd replace mine with are high dollar: GT3, GT350, Ariel Nomad/Atom, ZL1 1LE, Z06... for the money, Golf R with a tune is a great deal
Nice Car! I have a MK7.5 R Unitronic Stage 1+ ECU/TCU Tune, Emmanuel Design Lowering Springs/Rear Sway and Full VWR Intake. As a daily its just hard to beat.
The evo is epitome of the phrase, “because race car”.
The rear seats do not fold down because it has a boxed section that strengthens the chassis considerably and diminishes the rear opening compared to the standard lancer. Then it also has cross bracing on top of that behind the rear seats. On top of all that the rear seat backs are part of a tubular frame that bolts back there.
The evo x is so much race car the one to get is the GSR because the MR niceties are lost on what is essentially race car compromises.
Im sure that the owner in this video regrets nothing because the r32 fits his lifestyle better but put that r32 on a super windy road and he’d regret everything.
The evo x is one of those cars that makes people who think they can drive a race car everyday second guess themselves. Hell the commute is sometimes downright miserable. But put it on a tight canyon road and it becomes pure magic, and all of its commuting deficiencies are immediately forgiven!
I never realized how slow Subarus are until I got my mk7 GTI and even in stock form I was pulling away from WRXs. Then with a $500 tune you can sleep on STI's no problem. It's hilarious watching them spend thousands in mods to try to keep up but still can't. Not only do they get baby gains but they're heavier and have a bigger drive-train loss so GG subies!
Bad Hombre the awd system is different in these two cars with the Golf R being mostly front wheel drive and the rear wheel kicking in when needed. This explains the drivetrain loss. So the drivetrain in the STI is bulletproof up to more whp then the R. I personally like a stick shift without paddle shifters. Yea the Golf R is something like 20 lbs lighter not a big deal in my book.
@@chriswoodard8813 I wasn't talking about the R

I had a MK7 R and a B8.5 S4 at the same time. The R is infinitely better. Don't get me wrong, the S4 was a pretty good car, but it was heavy and you could feel it. As such, I sold the S4 right before they started plummeting in value after only a year of ownership. The R has 72k and climbing. Love that car so much. Plus, it's a fantastic family car.
Love it. The Golf R is my "realistic" dream car.

I will be trading in my wrx for a golf r as soon as I'm not upside down on it. I love the golf R
The RS3, RS4, and RS6 Hatchback are all awesome, but Americans just don’t buy Hatches or Manuals, so instead we get stuck with overpriced SUV’s. This car sounds awesome. Love it.

Screw that!!! I would never chase anyone for them to drive my car. Ever!!! In my mind if someone gets to drive my car they are privileged, not vice versa. I dont care if it's a show on a major network let alone a youtube channel. No offence intended.
I have a '17 GTI SE with PP 6MT ($32k). Had to upgrade the clutch ($1700) to run APR stage 1 high torque tune ($800). And I put some sticky rubber on it ($1000). Add an intake, wheel spacers, dogbone insert, and some other random tidbits, and I'm $36k in... considering the undefeatable traction control that kills any sort of launch, and the fact that it still breaks traction at 30mph from a 2nd gear roll on anything other than perfect pavement with warm tires, it's really only good for 40+mph pulls.
yes it has amazing brakes and handling, and is fun to drive and row gears, but I should've just spent the extra $7k and went Golf R DSG with APR stage 1. No need to upgrade the tires or clutch, and the launch control is amazing. I'll definitely be upgrading to Golf R in the next couple of years.
Great build! big fan of Golf R. 🇨🇦
I'm going to buy a Mk7 R. Hopefully sooner than later. I currently drive a Mk6 GTI with a stick. Great car! That car is honestly what really got me into VW. My first VW (2011 Golf TDI) got totalled by some ding bat in a pickup. As much as I really don't want to trade in the GTI. I probably won't be able to own both. The insurance on my GTI sucks because it's a 2 door 😒 Great video!
I traded in my MK7 gti for a 2019 STI. I regret it. Should have kept it or traded for R. Oh well...lesson learned.
Mikey that’s why you always gotta test drive multiple cars before settling on one
Sorry to hear that, why do you regret it though?
Imad S GTI feels like it's made out a solid block and STI feels like Legos. Plus I'm 34 years old and in the last 3 months my driving has increased and STI is not Dad duty friendly.
Sorry to hear that, man. I have a 320 crank hp Mk7 Gti and plan on trading for a Golf R soon. That seems like the best step up to me. Unless you're going for a big money car like a GT3RS or 720s
@@Mikey-ug7nj Yeah the R would definitely suit your needs, I love mine. It's such a hell of an all-rounder. I LOVE the way those STIs sound though, so damn good.

Love my 18'R
Would any of these mods void the warranty? It seems like mostly bolt on, but would love some insight on this.
Yes. The software would.
Yes. Any engine warrnty or drive train VW will scan the car for flash.
RS3 has 5 bangers and with a tune can put a hundred HP per bang hole. Stock they are 400.
The price of the RS3 is pretty nuts so I get that and this is cheaper even with mods
Subbie owners on deathwatch with that "Too much money to make it go fast" LOL
Don't put more power in your car man, focus on the suspension like the control arms and trailing arms, also upgrade the engine mounts and your car will be faster than any 600 hp muscle car around a track. If you DO put something in your car power related get a intercooler. I just don't want you to blow up the engine like SleepyDubVRT did!
These engines are good to 420 wheel torque, anything past that gets dicey. With valves springs and retainers you can safely rev it to 7,500 RPM, 420 FT/LBS at 7500 RPM is 600 HP which means you can ( and several people have) pull 600 WHP out of these things stock motor so long as you tune it properly to limit torque.
The engine mount doesn't really do a lot for the R, it's more to help wheel hop in the gti.
Once you get into the upgraded turbo levels of power you just start paying a lot for the gains you make compared to the basics he already has on the stock turbo.
Sleepydub had all the mods though I don't think it was much of his own fault
Efraim Luyando Sleepy dub is an idiot who literally knows nothing about cars. He just buys mods to make a TH-cam video.
@@steven44799 idk who told y'all that motor and trans mounts don't matter (don't forget the dogbone too). A stock turbo Golf R flows 33-34 lbs/min or about 330-340hp.

Thank you very much!!
I bought a '17 GTI brand new and will be strongly considering trading it in on a CPO '19 Golf R at some point in the future. I'd love to look at a brand new Mk8 Golf R, but the move to all-touchscreen controls is just a no go for me. Especially living in Wisconsin where winter gloves in the car are a customary winter morning experience, having to take them off to operate HVAC and seat heaters on a screen that's struggling to even function at -15 degrees, it's just stupid all around.
What exhaust set up is this? It sounds so good!
Zack great job on the video. Love the content. You are grooving now.
You're not shifting for yourself. You're telling the computer to shift for you ;)
I don't think you can compare it to an RS3. Maybe a modified S3. But the RS3 has that unique sound from the 5 cyl.
Bad DFW Drivers well the golf r and s3 are essentially the same car.
Same motor same chassis just a different look one is a hatch an other is a sedan
On sound, there's no contest. I was speaking more to the performance and 5-door design. The Golf R/S3 comparison is obvious because they share a platform, engine, and gearbox.
Bad DFW Drivers it’s almost impossible to get your hands on an RS3. Pound for pound it’s maybe the best/fastest car you can get for 60K (well optioned). I’ve seen a few modded that can pull close to 600 HP. Insane!
@@TheSmokingTire well stock the rs3s are in 11.8. Not sure how he can say it was slow when they make like 390 whp stock and 556 on stage 2 setup like this golf is. Way stronger trans than dq250 and even 2018 golf r i have has dq380 so even strong than this one and 1 more gear.

That Dennis Rodman analogy was so on point LOL.
Great video! had a 16' S3 with stage 2 apr and I loved it until someone hit me at a stop light and totaled it. I now drive SQ5 with a JB4 nice cruiser for the family. I still regret not jumping in an RS3 instead!
Vince Fabre RS3 is Honeslty the ultimate hatchback on sale right now. If it came with a manual it'd be a future classic
If the Golf R didnt look like a Shoe/Egg on wheels, the Auto shift lever had the +/- on the left side, and they were reversed, so you pull down to shift up to the next gear, this car would be 100x more popular with enthusiasts. I'd make room in my budget to buy one. I currently have a 2004 FXT 5spd, and it's cost about a used 2017 sti to make it get up to 380 crank hp and 430ctq.
First of all, the guy bought the wrong evo, second of all, golf r is still a very good choice
This guy is funny, he makes side comments in 3rd person and he’s pretty personable but he’s a little awkward 😂

I don't get his power, is the American version less powered than the Euro version? Because my friend has one and he's at 388hp with just a stage 1 tune and an intake.
Paulo T yes sir. In Europe it’s 310 hp stock. Usa it’s 292 stock at the crank
it is because the euro spec r gets dual injection (direct and port) us models only get direct injection
Should be around 400hp crank at stage 2 level. Some stage 1 cars making 390hp with intake. 370-380hp is typical stage 1 figures
US and Euro market cars are almost mechanically identical except the Euro cars add port injection and a slightly more aggressive tune. Stage 2 on both typically makes around 370-380 WHP, this one is on a mild tune it seems.
Who's stage what ever tune it is and what fuel it's tuned for makes a difference too.

Good video. Looks fast.
Domo-kun makes everything better!
I used to absolutely love VW but the GTI i owned was the most unreliable car i have ever owned. The golf R is indeed gorgeous and fast but it's just such a bland sterile looking car (subjective blah blah blah) that just kinda puts me to sleep. Def great for someone looking for a fun AWD practical and mature looking car but i wanted a sporty car that looks and feels it. The STI may not be the fastest and def should not be a contender for drag racing and building crazy amounts of power, but it is fast enough, handles great, has some of the best driver feedback feel today, looks great (subjective blah blah blah), and with a few mods you can make it decently quick (i would highly suggest elh as the power delivery improves vastly). People bash it for unreliability but those are almost always the drivers fault as nobody really knows how to properly take care of a car nowadays which results in early boom. It is a delicate car that if you take care of it, it'll take care of you! I've had mine for two years now running multiple mods pushing about 340 whp and 375 wtq on 93oct. Original engine, daily driven, and not one issue at all! Proper tuning and knowing how to mod it go a very long. Rant aside: Your style is vastly improved! I enjoy watching your one takes a hell of a lot more than when you first started! Keep up the great work my dude!
I love the the R 2019 DSG will be $42,000 when available and most dealers will not discount. Then back to the reliability, the last three German cars I owned, maintained by the book or over maintained by me always had issues and the BMW and Mercedes dealers suck, now more electronics longer VW warranty and most dealers suck? Not raging scared shit of the dealers and warranty ,forget about upgrades warranty void!
so its a map dwnpipe and what exhaust? whats it make to the wheels?
That car rips.
biggest problem with the boxer is its from the 1800s and is just dated technology. if you don't mod them for heaps of power they are decent commuters with a little extra umphl
Sup Zack! Great video!
The golf r Wolfsburg estate is even better 😼
Side note: There's no RS3 hatch. It's a Sportwagon, idc how many times they call it a hatch. And that's the best thing about the Golf (for now), it IS a hatch, and available in 3 doors
Golf R’s only have 4 doors in the US.
Since we're on the topics of hatchbacks, it's a shame we don't have the RS6 hatch in the US. By the way, this golf r is nuts! 380 horsepower is plenty in a commuter car

MaxSpeed yep, if you follow Mr JWW on TH-cam he had that car for awhile, that thing is a bullet!
That’s the only thing I like about the dsg.all it needs is a flash tune and your good.
And you don‘t even get the BMW M140i...!!! 3.0 Straight-Six 🔥 😍 🔥
It's exactly like an RS3 hatch. Minus an extra cylinder. And the sound. And worse seats. And the presence. And the class.
.... with less depreciation. And more reliability after warranty runs out. And less pretentious douchiness
Robert Burton and one less cylinder. And the sound. And the class...your points aren’t valid to me. They’re quite the opposite. Eye of the beholder. I sold my RS3 and suffered none of what you mentioned.
Hey man.... as long as you get out of it before the warranty expires you’re good.
There’s a reason why people avoid used Audi’s and Land Rovers like the plague
@@robertburton8055 Because a VW is any more dependable than an Audi after the warranty? Considering they just reduced their factory warranty from 6 years back down to 4? Had the RS3 for four years. Never went in once for warranty work. My MK6 GTI? Went in twice in two years.
So what is the most stable tune for the golf r rn?
What brand of catback and downpipe is he using? Love the sound...
This is my car. It has a MAP downpipe and Q300 exhaust by invidia. I also have a 12 inch resonator custom welded on my DP, because it was too loud.
@@RileyBassing Awesome car man. It looks and sounds phenomenal

@YO! At the time when I went with Eurodyne they were the only one that allows me to flash from home using my laptop instead of taking the car somewhere.
Tuning at home is why I went with Cobb
This car is INSANE
I want this. I need this. That thing is exactly what I need
Much better than the last one matt farah ripped on.
