Agreed. I once read about a pilot who crashed his plane at an air show and killed several people, in his trial. It was decided that he could not operate any vehicle again. Not even a bicycle apparently. Although I think that the latter instance was a bit too far. This was not in the US though.

The officer probably had his tires turned to the left to make sure that the car didn't get pushed into him while standing in front and protecting the car in front of him. Of course that would mean that the car is more likely to go into oncoming traffic, so that might be worse depending on the amount of traffic in that area.

IF another rare car had been coming the other way, he would have hit it. and it is just good practice to keep your wheels straight no matter how much traffic you THINK there is. plus the commenter said “depending on the traffic in the area” in any situation, it is better to not turn your wheels. it was a side note.

I think it's a trolly problem. But in this circumstance I would stack the deck in favor of not getting hit by my car. The odds of the a pedestrian surviving a direct hit is pretty low compared to a passenger seated in a car with seat belts. And the cruiser is trying to stop itself. In my totally unqualified opinion.
That person can't even drive on an abandoned road except for 2 other vehicles and hits the cop car. TAKE AWAY THEIR LICENSE "IF" THEY HAVE ONE; can you imagine if it were a busy roadway -- CARNAGE!

i HATE when my mom drives, and she will be doing things on her phone that can wait, or that i can do. ie: message someone, or put directions into google maps. thankfully at least, she has a phone holder up so she can glance between the road and the phone (still makes me super uncomfortable). and yes, ive tried grabbing the phone to do it myself, and shes yelled at me 🙄

You can say that again..... It happened to me 6 months ago. Thank goodness I wasn't killed. I was in the car,..I wasn't like the cop standing outside somewhere. But I didn't get hurt, But the car did get some damage on the rear driver side. I'm pretty convinced they weren't paying attention probably on their phone.

No one knows there is something about flashing vehicles that drives you to them that causes so many fatalities over the years for the last 20 years how come we haven’t come up with something betterto stop this we draw so many pedestrians flashing lights. When I went through drivers ed, my instructor was VERY adamant that you should always turn the wheels toward the direction you want the car to go if it were to roll away uncontrolled. If this cop had his wheels turned straight, I think this would have been a much different story
When you're parked helping someone, put your emergency flashers on. As you can see in the reflection on the hood,,no flashing lights , no reflection of flashers on the incompacitated car. Sheriff's Fault.
The accident is now under investigation WHY There was an officer on scene who witnessed it ! Check for medical or impaired condition. If not, then distracted driving causing great damage. Take license for 5 years

Road flares wouldn't help in this case. An empty road will look like a road for miles, the cop car being hit saved the original car from being hit.
