    People also buy online to avoid dealing with getting "cool-guy" shamed at a shop. That's a self-destructive behavior that bums me out around any sub-culture like skating.

    I like videos like this that make a brutally honest critique on skateboarding culture. Cause everyone loves to complain about “core skateboarding fading away” and all this corporate shit, but won’t do the extra to support the core brands that they claim to hold so near and dear to their heart. These types of conversations need to happen more often.

    People who complain about the price of boards need to watch how a skateboard is manufactured, there's so many steps involved, literally a modern marvel of engineering .

    I feel like you've really found your niche with these recent videos, they definitely set you apart from john, I love these videos where you go in depth about the inner workings of the skateboarding community, and if David had a channel I would definitely watch it. I can't wait to see more videos like this where you bring in people that really know their stuff and have personal experience from working in the community to talk about the "whys" behind skateboarding, and I also love how you guys mention "cool guying" because I thought I was the only one who would experience that but I would feel it at bigger shops like active and vans.

    This is an excellent topic that many have no clue about. You should continue the discussion , and bring in others. Boarders need to understand their actions have consequence. We need to support the people that drive the sport, and understand that letting the giant company's, internet sales into the game means killing the local shops that were there from the beginning. All while understanding that an amazing sport like this is going to attract a lot of people.

    I would say that the majority go under b/c skateboarding is meant for 5-15 year olds. One reason might be b/c once you hit 16 you should really be evolving to snowboarding, kiteboarding and kite landboarding, wakeboarding, and small to big wave surfing. So its hard to keep people coming back to a sport.

    I've heard you say before that people say that skate shoes are expensive. I've always thought they were relatively affordable. When I try to get the best gym shoes and walking shoes for when I don't skate I spend $150 CAN. When I buy the best skate shoe with everything I need in a skate shoe I spend $100 CAN. I realize if you skate a lot you go through more shoes, than gym shoes or whatever, but spending $100 CAN or $69 US (or whatever the price is in the States) for shoes that can survive being rubbed up against grip tape all day long for a few months sounds like a good price to me.

    • @bluetileskateboards
      @bluetileskateboards 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      mjc11board exactly! Nobody ever complains about paying 100+ for running shoes. Technically you're supposed to replace them every month as well. (Depending on how much you run)

    long rant time- I like this guy, he sounds like he really knows his shit in regards to business and it also sounds like his knowledge is hard earned. In terms of briefly adding some counter points, yes, skaters will destroy skating. Unless skating evolves into a more commercially viable activity ( which it appears it is becoming with the rise of longbording, skate vlogs etc. ). If it was still as niche as it was in the 80s/90s yes it would be long dead.
    in terms of price markups this is a practice called price discrimination and I think you would like it. In terms of where he should be making his profit he should be ( most likely is) making money in things called a *tied goods* which are the other parts of the skateboard example- printers are cheap because they want to sell you the ink.
    Another thing I see is that in skateboarding there tends to be a lack of consistent message. brands all declare niches and splinter the market. Small brands tend to use this but it effectively makes them a mere trend because they sacrifice longevity for current popularity. While big brands prepare for the long term.
    last point is that what the phenomena of the internet is doing is separating demographic ages groups. a physical store is becoming fairly obsolete but the thing is *specialized* stores are growing. and the reason I think this is, is because people have no need to shop physically anymore, so they shop socially. So stores have become smaller and smaller, edgier and edgier. Fuck we have a store here in Missouri that sell just olive oils. These shops may not stand the test of time but I feel like if skate shops put in a little more advertising effort, positioned themselves as a small( therefore wiser, better, faster ) option I think there is still room for a specialty skate shop to grow. Just remember everyone born today will never experience life before the internet. Consider it a blessing and a curse. We know what came before it. But we don't know what is happening right now because of that bias.

I always buy one random textbook a year(a cheapish one) and I've probably learned more from those random purchases than from professors. all college tends to be ( give or take ) is taught books so if you can find the source of the books you find the knowledge. I live about 40 minutes outside of Pittsburgh and the closest local skate shop besides zumiez is unfortunately literally an hour away from my house not counting city traffic. Mind you I live in the suburbs that is in the middle of 5 different townships, so it's not like I'm out in rural area. It's really hard to support a local skate shop when it's not local AT ALL and the parks I skate have not been funded or given support by them. So I usually buy my equipment from a small Vans store that has a little skate booth or I order offline. sucks but you got to understand there is weird scenarios where you simply cannot support a local skate shop when it's not local.

  • @coopertrost3816
    @coopertrost3816 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As long as there is a demand for boards, someone is going to make them to make money. anyone willing to make boards is worth supporting in my opinion. as a big dude i can go through a board or two a month easy. a deck a month, 4ish pairs of shoes for the year, grip, a couple sets of wheels a year i added it up to about 100 dollars a month to skate if everything is full price. Thats almost as much as it costs to feed me for the whole month. for a lot of people (like me) its not about the dilemma of do "do i support my local shop" or not, the dilemma is i either find it cheap online, or i dont skate at all. I understand skateshops cant stay in business if people dont buy stuff there, which is going to be the "full price" as discussed in the video. But skateshops dont sell things at a price that I can justify in my budget to keep skating. Therefore, the online company making things a lot cheaper is the company worth supporting for me, they make it possible for me to skate.

    In regards to 6:11 that makes total sense. As a skater I don't see the point in spending $90 on a pair of shoes that I wreck in a month. Therefore I buy sale shoes. As shitty as it is I don't have the funds to support the core skate companies if I want to keep skating :(

    Time out! I get and support the ethics of supporting local shops, but some skate shops sell each truck individual for the same rate you get a pair through ccs; same goes for bearings. So of course in that case I am going to support online. Hell, I just got a revive board and trucks for under a hundred bucks easy. Oh and my board doesn't get pressure cracks the next day because they're fresh and not sitting around in a semi ac'd room at night in Florida. 58 bucks for deck with a local shop or 52 ( because upgraded grip) bucks at revive. Got a set of trucks for close to 40 bucks. There is no way I am going back to Westisde Skateshop. I refuse to pay more for somethings I can get cheaper online and still get free shipping; I save myself the two hour round trip.

    Get lakai, emerica, and all that to match the price of nike sb, or make the same quality for the price, im skating generic dunks atm, they worth the price, but need to get suede pair next time, easier to flip the board. Now if lakai could offer as good a product as nike sb janoski, or a generic dunk low at the same price point they would be in, but I am yet to see them get near the quality to price ratio, unless ofcourse you find them on sale. Ive had lakai, yet I didnt go back to them at full price, other brands will last longer.

    Far out dude, in Australia we pay $110 for a board. Seems as if almost double on average for all types of skate wear. The internet and trends fuck with skating in all sorts of ways.

    The old school SKATE PUNX DAYS will never be repeated unfortunately, I wish that the cool guys would just SFU, I don’t care what tricks you can do as long as you can say you enjoy hill bombing or cruising about on your board you got my respect ✌🏻

    I dont hate big brands or that skating is popular but it is true that they don't do much for skating other than popularizing it. which again I'm not against. an example is there is a skate park in my town that is falling apart and my local shop raised money to rebuild a bunch of the quarter pipes and replace the rails and even add some new features. these big companies aren't bad they just won't be doing these things for the local community.

    How expensive is it to ride a skateboard in europe?
    - Deck - you can have a blank minilogo for 35€/43$ - but anything else, no matter if zero, flip, chocolate, almost, girl, habitat, or whatever... youll pay between 50€/62$ and 80€/100$
    - Trucks - They start with 16€/20$ but if youre looking for something more special like a Independent Titanium 3 Light, then you will definitely pay 60€/73$ for one truck.
    - Rolls - Yep, they start with 20€ when they´re on special, but usually youll pay around 40€... if youre looking for maybe a spitfire Formular Four Lock in, you better bring 60€/74$ to the skate shop.
    - Bearings - as always the good mini logo bearings are only 12€/15$ which is surprisingly cheap, (and lets be fair... they are really good), but if you want some bones... super reds 35€/43$, swiss7 80€/98$....
    So... yeah you can have a complete board for 100 Euros (123 usd) / but if you get yourself stuff without taking care of always picking the cheapest, then you will probably end up with a price of around 200€/250$ for a proper board and without going too crazy while choosing your parts. and i would say this is the average value of a skateboard here.
    Shoes... hehe... for 40 euros you can get yourself some djinns, c1rca, osiris, etnies, dickies, and globes - for skating absolutely perfect - cant do anything wrong with it. But also here... if youre looking for like for example vans ultrarange pro x spitfire or so.... then youre ready to make your 100 to 120 euro investment which is around 150 usd.
    In my opinion... some of the prices are just gone through the roof, however I cant remember that the prices were any different in the past... I personally think, its damn expensive (or am i maybe wrong? i dont know)
    How expensive is skateboarding in the usa?
