  • The 2022 Sundance Film Festival line-up is packed with industry powerhouses, but one of the highlights of the event is discovering emerging talent and there are two individuals involved in the movie Master that absolutely need to be on your radar - star Zoe Renee and first time feature director, Mariama Diallo.
Renee plays Jasmine Moore in the film, an especially bright student who’s excited to kick off her first year at an elite New England university. However, soon after arriving, Jasmine comes to realize that there’s a darkness lurking underneath the school’s pristine facade, a darkness tied to its Salem-era roots and blatant racism plaguing the campus. In addition to Jasmine, Master also covers what happens when Regina Hall’s Gail Bishop accepts the position of “Master,” a dean of students, and all the responsibilities and baggage that come with it.
With the film celebrating its World Premiere at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, I got the chance to chat with Hall, Renee and Diallo about bringing this “spooky drama” to screen. Check out this interview to hear all about how Diallo scored the green light for her first feature, what it was like for Hall making the transition from the Scary Movie spoof series to a deeply unsettling horror film, about Renee's experience tackling her second lead role in a feature, and loads more!
Also, be sure to keep an eye out for Master when it hits prime video globally on March 18th.

Excellent!!! This film was a real gem; the symbolism , the metaphor of “horror “in the guise of “racism” (or vice versa) as these black women navigated an all white landscape, representing “America” certainly isn’t lost on the audience… Regina Hall’s evolution as a consummate actor is incandescently clear here, the direction superb, and Ms. Zoe’s performance was outstanding. I genuinely enjoyed this production…. Can’t believe I’m just discovering this !!! Kudos to all involved !!

It was confusing to me. Who actually killed Jasmine?

@@Sam-fg9lf based on the little Red Robin coat, I think the teacher with the braids was the witch who killed her or maybe her nightmares and haunting visions drove her to commit suicide.

I feel like Liv killed her. I don't believe she killed herself. She was too smart and too strong for that.

Hall: She has grown so much over the years and the woman only looks better with age.
