Maika Monroe Interview: Watcher, God Is A Bullet and the Horror Genre - Sundance 2022

- Maika Monroe’s got a good deal of variety on her filmography, but she’s certainly embraced the horror genre the most. Thanks to It Follows and The Guest, 2014 could be considered a breakout year for Monroe and, ever since, she’s consistently filled her schedule with projects that give her the opportunity to work on especially bold stories and/or with some very promising new voices in the genre, like Watcher writer-director, Chloe Okuno.
The film marks Okuno’s feature debut and stars Monroe as Julia, a woman who agrees to move to Romania with her husband (Karl Glusman) when he scores a job opportunity there. Having left her acting career behind, Julia finds herself alone in the apartment often and, one night, notices that someone in the building across the street is watching her. That evolves into a sense that she’s being followed wherever she goes, making her wonder, is it the same person and could it be the local serial killer dubbed The Spider?
With Watcher celebrating its World Premiere at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, I got the chance to have an extended chat with Monroe about the new film and her experience with the horror genre thus far. Check out what he told us about Watcher, working with Okuno, the God Is a Bullet movie, and so much more in this video interview!

She's wonderful in "Watcher." A revelation, actually. I see Oscars in her future. She's THAT good an actor. It's just a matter of time.
“Why are you following me” bruh she’s SELLS that scene…I was legit blown away she is great at telling a story all they facial expressions
She’s such a talented actress
God she is gorgeous on a whole other level. Then you throw in talent and boom you have the full package.
Great actress 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Great interview!
Anyone watching this, check her out in "The Guest".
It's a great throwback movie, she and Dan Stevens are standouts and really make that movie work.
Really great actress, has such a great look at amazing screen presence. Loved It Follows and just saw Watcher. Refreshing to see someone act in original movies and not Marvel / DC garbage.
She’s is amazing in both movies and such a great actress!!!
I’m so stoked for “LONGLEGS” man
I love the pacing on this film. So good!
She is a great actress. ❤❤❤❤
Hey y’all, I finally got around to the ‘Watcher’ movie.
I really like this movie and became a Maika Monroe fan. She has a lot of talent and screen presence.
I really identified with the isolation and language barrier of residing in a foreign country.
I have a Thai girlfriend in Thailand and sometimes struggled to communicate with Thai people as the Thai language is not easy to learn.
Even using the google translation app can contribute to misunderstanding. The context of the translation is not always correct.
I feel awkward at social events because my Thai girlfriend chats away with other Thai people in the Thai language and that language barrier contributes to a feeling of isolation.
Although I identified with Maika’s isolation, luckily I have not encountered any dangerous stalkers.
In summary,I think Manila Monroe has a bright future in the movies 🙏🏽
Maika Monroe has my whole heart. I was just watching Significant Other and it was super weird, but in a great way
She's beautiful, intelligent and a little quirky. My kind of girl. Also, yes! 'It follows' redefined the horror genre reviving the 70s and 80s classics while infusing a dystopian /existential vibe.
Omg I love her! I did not realize she was in it follows til I finished watching The Watcher - Wow loved that Movie! She is truly amazing and I def see Oscar’s in her future!
Till today I want the leather jacket with the skull on the back Nick Cassavetes wore in The Wraith . One of my favorite movies . His resume is heavy and this movie does not fall short . It's hard to watch , but the movie might be more intelligent than it really is . We might realize it in 10 years .
Can’t wait for God is a Bullet
Love her !
I would watch Maika read the phone book . . . I wish she did more horror movies . . . eight years between "it follows" & "watcher"!!??--that ain't right
Check The Guest, 2014 same as It Follows, not full on horror.
I would say it's an character driven action thriller with some horror aspects to it, in a way feels like Terminator and Halloween 3...
It's such a good movie, and Maika is great in it :)
She looks like Gwen Stefani
It follows
her best movie
@@David-xn1wc no The Guest is
@@joevans27 I disagree but I respect your opinion.
@@David-xn1wc The guest really was good, although the ending puts it behind It Follows. The tense vibe through it Follows was phenomenal. kinda wish The Guest didn't go full action. should have kept the mysteriousness going through out the whole film. Although how they said there was only 2 bodies at the end was very well done
Both It Follows and The Guest are future classics, amazing movies!
What exactly is a genre film? Aren't all films by definition a genre film because every film has a specific genre?
they mentioned it at the beginning of the interview, that's why they keep saying "genre film" because us, as audience, we´re supposed to already know which genre they're referring to. :)
God Is A Bullet is too violent, it ruined the movie. They should have focused more on the topic of trafficking and the psychological impact.
womp womp
Does anyone think she slightly looks like Florence Pugh? Both beautiful
is that Gwen Steffani 😜
What a woman. A magnificent specimen
Lots of good movies for her; she was the best thing in shitty God Bullet.... but if only she could get a big movie now, like Julia Roberts did with Pretty Woman, she could carry it and deserves it, but Woke Hollywood won't grant her that. Too bad.
Is she single
Joe Keery is her bf
