I saw my violin teacher in this video who is now retired. One point I would like to mention is that Chen Qigang's original reason for writing this piece was because he had lost his son, who died in a car accident in Switzerland, and it is the greatest suffering on earth to send off one's son with a grey hair. Chen Qigang's experience of honour and glory followed by the tragic loss of his son has led to such a poignant and somewhat peaceful piece of work. I hope that Mr Chen can minimise his inner pain and that his son can rest in peace.陈老师有一段话我想放在这里：我的人生，可能悲多过于喜。没有吃过苦得人不懂得享受甜，也不会懂得喜悦得到来往往与痛苦相连，且最终不会停留于喜悦，而是消逝于无。悲喜同源，人们因得而喜，因失而悲，但皆有阴阳两面，悲与喜如同得与失，是一对不可分割的孪生，都是瞬间的过程，留给自己的只是虚无。岁月带给人宽广的视野，当脑子越来越清醒超脱时，也会感到肌体老化的反差感，还有所经历的苦难与境遇，表现一种撕心裂肺的失落感，但写的时候又发现，失落变成了一种温情，悲喜是同源得。用25分钟，穷尽起伏跌宕的心绪，通过25分钟的积累我希望悲喜同源最后能达到某种升华，给人以淡淡的感觉。首演前夕彻夜难眠，像等待孩子出生，而触发的源头确是丧子之痛，le joie de la souffrance
I just interviewed Qigang Chen for Strings magazine about this work, which was inspired by the 2012 death of his son (just released on DG). Here is one of his comments: "The most important function of music is to express people’s emotions, psychological states, and spiritual life. Because of music’s abstract, spatial, and three-dimensional nature, it is better suited than any other art form to express those human feelings, which otherwise remain formless and inexpressible through language. Grief is one such inexpressible inner state, an emotion reserved for oneself, impossible to communicate through words. Music, my old friend, was able to provide me with emotional relief."

Truly, a Modern Romantic work: coherently complex and melodic throughout, and stands easily with the great violin concertos of all time - Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Sibelius, etc. I thought such works could no longer be written.

It's amazing how he makes the violin lose its quality and becomes an erhu... so beautiful...
Maxim Vengerov takes my breath away!
This violin concerto always reminds me my little childhood/preteens time and my sister middle/high school education.
Music indeed speaks to the soul, Chen, Qigang's work did just that. Amazing work.
I really wish they didnt mess up the audio at SISIVC 2018, I like Vengerov rendition but watching Nancy Zhou perform this gave me chills.

This was a live performance recording.
It's called a dovetail in orchestral writing, Vengerov hands the note over to the concertmaster (off camera) - great intonation, you can't tell the difference between them!
