  • Next to face the fiery Dragons is Vivian Blick, managing director of Tango Group Ltd. He's here today to offer 5% equity in return for a £200,000 cash investment in his range of alternative energy products, but what does his patent really look like?
    An international sensation, Dragon's Den features entrepreneurs pitching for investment in the Den from our Dragons, five venture capitalists willing to invest their own money in exchange for equity.

    They're not powered by water, they're *activated* by water, in other words there's a chemical already in there which reacts when water is added and produces an electric output. This isn't a green technology - it's just a battery with some water in it. Normal rechargeable batteries are more green than this because at least they avoid the landfill for longer.

    It's not "water powered". It is "water activated" and the water obviously dissolves some substance in the battery to make an electrolyte. That substance gets used up and ends up in the water which is poured down the sink. Not environmentally friendly, at all.

      @UC-XbUU3TXvmKUyTbudrlghg Like people already pointed out in the comments, there are batteries out there (that have existed for years now) that use water (like this one) as a source to make the actual material that holds the energy to react (the water is not the fuel itself, fuel is the thing that holds the potential energy, so this is not), once that material exhaust its energy no matter how much water you pour into it, you won't get any more energy, so you can practically exchange any other liquid that contains hydrogen and oxygen, and bingo, you can make you material to react, and like you also point out, these batteries are not only expensive, they are also inefficient, and no eco-friendly, no amount of "development" or years will change that chemical reaction, that's why people selling this as "the future" are selling a scam.
      This is equivalent of the machine that draws potable water out of thin air, the concept has been tried a thousand times, but you'll never make it work out, there is just so much water in the air, even in the most moist place ever, it will take you an eternity to make just a glass of water, so it will become the most expensive glass of water ever, so no matter how much "technology" you throw at that idea, you can't make something out of thin air, and people still claim is the future, and as many think they are discovering the wheel, while the idea, the concept, and the technology has been already fully developed years ago.
      So people buy into these scams cause at first glance they work, they do what they promise, but not exactly as they claim, and it is known that the idea is a dead end, no improvement can be done to them, that's why no major company actually uses them, not because oil companies have unknown conspiracies going on.

Going personal on the character of entrepreneurs (who were by the way pre selected) is obviously not good for the image of the Dragons and the TV format. Many people in the comment do not get that this goes on national tv and while entrepreneurs are usually ready to be criticised on their business, no entrepreneur in his right mind would risk his personal reputation.

I think the show is ok 'entertainment' but most companies should not bother presenting on this show and head directly to banks for loans, angel investors directly or obtain funding privately. The only real reason to be on the show is for media exposure in my view to push a cause, or for the purposes of more investor interest elsewhere.

      David they're talking about a situation where somebody will pay 200k to own 5% of the business including the 200k cash injection. This would mean the business with the 200k cash injection is worth 4 mil, and the business without the 200k (i.e. the business as it currently is today that's being brought to the table) is worth 4 mil - 200k = 3.8mil. So it's worth 3.8 mil before the investment ('pre money') and 4 mil after it.
      This is always referred to incorrectly in the den. The dragons will definitely know this, I can only assume it's done for the purposes of tv (and on some really early clips you do hear them talk about pre and post money).

    - Hi guys, guess what, you know that scam thing I am doing? I get to go on Dragon's Den and try and scam the Dragons?
    - But Vivian, won't they immediately see it as a scam?
    - Nah, I'll be fine.

    FFS sake - anyone can take anodic an cathodic materials which have a potential difference which is exploited and available when ionic water (e.g. seawater) is added, and make them into a cell - at no point did the supplicant even say that they are rechargeable, as I recall. It's a sheer pisstake.

    • @beeble2003

      Correct. He lets people think that you can just keep adding more water to get more electricity, just like you can keep adding petrol to your car to get more miles. But never actually says that.

    • @gurglejug627
      @gurglejug627 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@beeble2003 adding water is cheap and easy enough for most people, but anodes and cathodes erode and degrade - and they are expensive and have to be produced. The 'amount' of electricity which comes from them is negligible (without power input) in any reasonable size of apparatus.

      I agree; I was looking for this comment as I don’t understand the £4m v £3.8m discrepancy. One could argue that the offered 5% direct ownership of the company would mean a 5% indirect ownership of the £200k received by the company via the investment, but even that argument would only result in a £10k difference in perspective, not a £200k difference in perspective.

    • @beeble2003
      @beeble2003 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@matthewbell4273 If you invest £200k in it, your £200k will be 5% of the value. So the value _then_ is £4M. But that value includes the £200k that you just put into it, so the value before your investment must have been £3.8M.
