    4:35 Both the disk and the pads are unsprung mass because the suspension acts "above" them, but the disk is also rotational mass, which you go on to explain very well. Easy to make a small terminology mistake with a long script like this. Thank you very much Sylvain, the education you're providing on this channel is AMAZING.

      @@apollomorris9920 They are not 'just slick'. They are MotoGP specific with specialised construction, heat operating ranges & rubber compounds.

      Yes, that would make a good video, but i have to ask Suzuki and Michelin first. MotoGP tires are different from the ones you can buy. They are made specifically for MotoGP bikes

Just for mater of interest would you be interested to do a video comparing the 600cc vs 1000cc bikes on track and how different they are and what comes and pros of each other.     Ie, Double sintered (those very expensive SBS, brembo and alike pads.

    Great video. Calipers are also unsprung, but obvs not rotating therefore not part of the inertia value. Look forward to the next one.

    Thanks for another very informative video. Just splitting hairs, I would split (duh!) where you use the term "unsprung weight" in two components: the real unsprung weight, which influences suspension action, and the rotating mass, which influences steering input and feedback. But I guess in the end it is the total package which determines the feel and stability in and out of corners, so... never mind :)

    P. S. To clarify: when you talk about the advantages of light carbon disks, you talk about 'unsprung mass' but you meant 'rotational mass'. Unsprung mass is all the mass below the suspension and inticates how much induced force is counteracting against the movement of the suspension. Rotational mass indicates all the rotation masses, which induce tourques, inertia traps and stabilizing forces on the bike.

      Correct! Also angular velocity is conditioned by the weight of the brake parts attached to the wheel. For instance, the corner entrance is much easier if the wheel ( with all involved rotational masses) weights less.

      In similar fashion to a lightweight wheel, carbon brakes do indeed save both unsprung and rotational mass.

    1:15: Yes! Your brakes don't brake the bike, the tires do. The brakes are "only" transmitting the torque to the wheels

    amazing video.
    one question though: why would a rider use the "high mass" 320mm disc over the normal 320? from what i see at 6:50 the pads are not touching the inner part of the disc, so it looks like useless extra weight

    what do you think about the weight transfer cancel by tapping the rear brake before hitting the front? the bike sits down and lift less when braking harder.

    Sylvain does the carbon carbon brakes feel overpowered or is it just enough to do the job .
    As u have said brakes limiting factor is tyres .Does suspension and different suspension geometry also have a part in braking.
    Does using rear brakes control overall suspension dive. Or is there a combination which controls dive.
    Do manufactures try different rim width for improving handling or braking .
    Aren't LHS brake ( scooter brake) far more superior to use than foot.
    As for front and rear brake what are your options with respect to brake piston sizing. And how does it work.
    Don't u think since launch control is spreading its reach to suspension like motocross bike have . Wouldn't it be good to have suspension control during braking ( manually controlled for now ) . To hold the front suspension in a position to turn harder.
    How do you anchor your body during braking. From foot to hand.
    Is there any development to combine the front and rear suspension or use hydraulics to control the dive or rebound .

    Did you mean that the carbon disks gain more advantage than the carbon pads because of the decrease in rotational inertia? because both the disks and pads qualify as unsprung masses. I think that would more properly account for the improved turn-in sensitivity. What do you think?

      That’s right. Both unsprung mass but the big difference is the rotation mass. So wheels and discs (and tire) mass is the main thing here 👍🏻

    Brake disks are both unsprung mass and rotating mass, but when you're talking about acceleration and braking, you mean to say rotating mass. The pads are only unsprung, not rotating. Lower unsprung mass is why it feels better going over bumps.

    You keep mentioning "unsprung mass" when describing the disks, but both the disks and the pads are unsprung mass. The beginning of unsprung mass is with the the upper fork tube. Everything attached below that is unsprung mass.I understand you were talking about the increased gyroscopic effect of having a heavier disk as apposed to a light one -- you can turn more quickly, no?

      Yes, probably simplified a bit too much on the edit, lighter pads help too being unsprung. The main difference though is the lighter discs as its unsprung rotational mass that has an important effect on inertia

      Not at all. As long as you don’t over rev’ the engine on downshift.

    A quand les scoots avec 1disque carbone et un disque acier sur un Tmax(argument commercial pour les kékés ;))! Et pas mal géré la figure d'Oliveira à la découverte des freins carbone, il a peut-être fait un petit pipi, moi j'aurais fait un gros vol! Ce qui est vraiment impressionnant, c'est la rapidité d'évolution de ces systèmes avec un feeling au top après très peu de temps pour faire évoluer le matériel. Quant au tarif, réservé aux MotoGP d'ailleurs les seuls pilotes réellement capables d'utiliser ce matos de dingue, donc je pourrai continuer à cramer mes pads sur mes disques acier (ou fonte? ça existe encore si ça a déjà existé?) Dès que je reviens à la piste. Et as tu des jantes carbone sur ta moto de superbike ?

    確かにセラミックカーボンはコーナー手前まで突っ込んでフルブレーキングできるが、ドライバーの手腕によるだろう。何故ならコーナーが、壁が一気に近づくと体がこわばるからだ。
    セラミックカーボンの特長と特性を理解して、メーカーの信頼がないとブレーキをおいしく使用できないからだ。
    クローズドコースのタイムならセラミックカーボン、公道ならスチールで良いだろうね笑

    In Sepang 2015, Rossi rode Marquez out wide but did not intend for any contact. Marquez initiated the contact by not going wide or cutting back but instead riding into Rossi. Marquez wanted to crash and even pulled his own front brake lever to make sure he did. Disgraceful.
