    I think the premise is better suited for a television show than a movie. You can spend more time developing the world and characters over 12 episodes than a two-hour movie.

    Best part, when all the vampires went crazy because they didn’t get enough blood in their coffee, and they tore the blood bag

    Best scene in this movie is when that subspecies bat creature breaks into Edward’s kitchen and Edward and his brother have to fight it. Ethan Hawke plays Edward’s fear so well. That scene scared the f _ _k out of me. 😱😱😱😱

    I think I like this film a lot more than you guys did but totally understand your complaints. I wish they were given a bigger budget. Kinda amazing what they did with what they had to work with. Still holding out we get a sequel one day even if that's unlikely lol.

    To bring up the animal discussion, it's pretty much said by Sam Neill towards the end, when he shows that Dalton's scientist colleague had finished a substitute, but it wouldn't stop human farming, because some people are just gonna keep wanting the 'real thing', and they as a company would provide it for premium prices.
    tl:dr money money money :p

    Honestly I think they were drinking from the World of Darkness well with their lore, where vampires can feed off any blood at first but as they grow more powerful, they get less and less of what they need from animals and are forced to prey on humans. Eventually that isn't enough either and they're forced either to feed on their own kind (which is regarded as cannibalism) or enter a sleep like state called Torpor which leaves them vulnerable for decades while their power lowers to a point where they can feed normally again. that also has the side effect of having them come back out of touch with the politics of their kind, making them socially weak, not knowing about the commonplace working of the normal world which makes them mentally weak and being physically weaker than when they went into this state to boot.
    I'm thinking the change into bat monsters after feeding on vampire blood was born mostly out of the need to make it different enough so White Wolf Publishing couldn't claim infringement.

    All your complaints are valid, but we like this film as a solid fun, C+/B flick that like you said at the time was the ONLY film grounding vampires back in horror, when that God Awful Twilight was all the rage.

    I like to imagine it takes place in the Blade Universe. There's some similar behavior from the vampires. Notably their extreme reaction to sunlight and a "serum". They even have a similar look and priorities, like business oriented vampires, and even having a de-evolution in vampires like Blade 2. Not my favorite, but it's still fairly entertaining. Great review guys.

  • @edisonlima4647
    @edisonlima4647 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My head canon for why they didn't resort to animal blood would be that there were none left.
    Vampires are often a metaphor for unsheckled greed and abandonment to one's cravings (sexual of otherwise), so maybe they drank the animals like there was no tomorrow and then there were only people, which the vampires were also leading to extinction.
    But yeah, I agree, the movie makes a terrible job at clarifying some very important bits of its inner workings.

    As a premise is sure an interesting take on the vampire mythos and how a modern formal society full of vampires could end, the film itself benefits for having good actors that give convincing performances and also the direction and cinematography present a believable setting and world, however the movie maintain a narrow view and keep it small as well as a lacking of development and resolution of the whole idea which give a feeling of dissatisfaccion and eventually make the movie forgettable

    Thought that non human blood gradually turned the vamps into the bat creatures in the same way lack of human blood were turning the starving. His ears were starting to transform in the movie but just gradually

  • @darryledxavier6392

    I personally like to believe that they abandoned live stock and didn't look after them so they died off quickly aslo vampire films make human blood the sweetest and most desired and it seems. They forgot about animals and only remembered when it was too late

    • @Blaize24
      @Blaize24 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My understanding is that they need the DNA in human blood to avoid becoming subsiders, which is why animal blood is not useful.

    Ethan Hawk did a great job as usual✨I loved the concept of this film for what it could have been and the look of the vampires who’ve transitioned into the mutants. But when they ventured off into the vampires turning back human the story went left! Great Review Guys ❤️

    I get similar feelings from this movie as I do from the first Underworld one, interesting premise and world building that gets squandered by the time the movies are done. I have Daybreakers in my dvd collection but I only watched it that one time and never felt the need to revisit it. The ending of this review however cracked me up!😂

  • @klblythe

    So does that mean the girl at the beginning is human? She burned by the sun, but isn’t the sun burning you what turns you back into a human? Or do you burn and have to be put out to fully transform back? 🤯

Willem Dafoe and Ethan Hawke are always great though! Maybe try "Byzantium", that is more "old-school" vampire than Daybreakers.

    2:03 That mutual improv.
    Have not seen this movie, but the premise sounds great. Either way, I do believe the time is right for a proper "Vampire The Masquerade" HBO series or trilogy. A political/noir/horror thriller, in a fractured Europe and corrupted USA. It writes by itself.

    This movie has some of the best visually fun bits I have seen in movie's
    The starving vamps security guards going feral turning and eating each other is well done ✅, the vampire changing to human in sunlight and quenching tank is fun
    But their could have been more action and more of the mutated vampire monster's. And the blood substitute never goes anywhere, would have been funny that was the unintentional cure

  • @nickmattio3397

    Oh good what a perfect movie for 2020 every captured human has been turned into a blood Capri sun pack, btw I think that girl writing in her diary was patient 0 for the virus; drinking any blood besides human I think still over time would mutate you into a subsider because human blood is the top genetic puzzle piece driver to stay “healthy”

    Not a bad vampire movie, btw. We do have to adress the 'core' of the problem though: the Twilight franchise killed vampire flicks for (at least) 30 years. Again, the hammy trio Pattison the weak, Kristen the gal with the big chin and Wolf Boy Lautner made all vampires look like VEGANS.
