You're right, the line "we are one, but we are many" is inspirational. It invokes a feeling of togetherness and should be our national anthem, in my opinion. We still do have a lot of work to do when it comes to our indigenous Australians, our governments have allowed people to treat them poorly and I'm sure I will get responses from some that will dispute what I am saying but the facts are clear. As for The Seekers, they were a massive hit in the 60s having huge hits that were competing with The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.
Eddy mate, the first verse was about our indigenous peoples, they're the oldest race on Earth & they've actually been here 60,000 years. The second verse was about the convicts/criminals/prisoners from the UK that were sentenced their terms to the colony. The UK's prisons were overcrowded & that's why they were sent here but majority of the convicts were petty thieves & once their term was up they then were free to go back to the UK or stay here & the majority stayed here. They were even gifted land by the Governor to become farmers for a fresh start for the convicts. Also something that not many know, even a lot of Aussie's wouldn't know is that when people back in the UK found out about that in most colonies, especially the first fleet weren't actually locked away in cells, they were allowed to roam free, live in there own little houses still being feed & given the necessities while still doing their convict time of more or less building a country, people in the UK actually committed petty crimes just to be sentenced to the colony so they could have a fresh start to life & try to be as successful as possible by turning their lives around

not quite like that - there was nowhere to roam around - they initially lived in camps surrounded by British soldiers - they were scared shitless with the indigenous people that they could hear but never see so no one ever ventured into the bush - you make it sound like a holiday which it was not - they were govern by ruthless soldiers who could do whatever they wanted to do with them -and god forbid if you were a single female - you really need to read the real history of what the first convicts endured that were sent to Australia
