  • In this episode of Cult Following, host Serena Dai visits a massive new location in Buena Park, where thousands of people waited for hours to grab addictive pastries when it first opened. One of the biggest and busiest restaurants in the Los Angeles area is a Cuban bakery called Porto’s. No matter what time of the week, each location is packed with people looking for affordable sandwiches, potato balls, and cheese rolls.
    Eater is the one-stop-shop for food and restaurant obsessives across the country. With features, explainers, animations, recipes, and more - it’s the most indulgent food content around. So get hungry.

    I'm a long time porto's fan so lemme break it down. The potato balls are served piping hot, the potatoes are soft and buttery, and the filling has a nice spicy tang to it. The guava/cheese pastry is flaky, buttery, and the filling is a great combination of soury sweet mixed with creamy from the cheese filling. The tres leches has a a great fresh taste (not too soggy) and has a nice milky vanilla sweetness from the 3 milks, (my favorite thing to get here). I haven't had the new sandwich but I can say that the cuban sandwich is pretty freaking good here. The pork is nice and tender, the ham is sweet and savory, the cheese is gooey and creamy, and the mustard ties it all together with a rich bitterness. However, the bread is what makes it all worth it because it is always fresh, soft, and buttery. Lastly, the plantains are crispy, not too oily, and have a shocking little sweet aftertaste that kind of lingers on the tongue. So there you go, folks.

    Generally I think the episodes are getting better. What will make it much better is if Serena describes the taste of the food in more detail. Like what Lucas does on dining on a dime. Otherwise I think the content is good.

    • @nighttrain7404
      @nighttrain7404 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yolanda Chang the thing is, whether this is a cult following episode or taste and review series, Serena's review is still limited and the same in both types. It's not that she has to be Lucas. People are asking her to improve her presentation, vocabulary and mannerisms to the level of popular hosts. Instead everyone e apologies for her and shove her lack of quality down our throats

    I'm getting an Eater version of Insider Food video that they're trying to create in these videos with this hostess. Insider food is a short video that shows appetizing but quick shots of foods and a short description of the restaurant/food. Typical Eater videos go more in depth with the history of the restaurant/food while also describing how the food taste. This type of videos with this hostess is, what I feel, to be a mixture of these two types of filming styles to try to appeal to the Insider Food audience but is pissing off the current Eater audience.
    The lesson here: Change the hostess or change the video style because this isn't cutting it.

    I really enjoy the cult following videos and Serena as the host. This video was enjoyable to watch and sums up the topic nicely; the food was delicious. The camera work and editing were great keeping the viewers interested. Serena's style is unlike the other hosts and I like the manner in which she rates the food which is short and to the point and not over doing it with too many adjectives. However, I believe she'll be first rate if she just adds just a few choice words to describe what she is eating.

I saw another review she did on a LA Taco spot that specializes in hard shell tacos and she said something to the effect of “hard shell tacos are not really my thing.” Why send a reviewer to a restaurant that already doesn’t like that type of food? All types of content on TH-cam, doesn’t matter how low the integrity level is. lol
