    I first watched this video two years ago and thought it was great. I'm now in the process of building a rig for my R6 and came back to this for some sage advice. Watching it for a third time now. Thanks so much for posting this, Ashston - Cheers!

      For others following along - you might want to change out the matte box support for a general lens support if you are using a zoom lens - for zoom lenses where the barrel telescopes out, you can't use a support that locks the matte box into place (of course). I didn't think of this initially when I was putting my order together but have since made the slight modification. I suppose if I were using a prime lens it wouldn't matter as much. Note that in my case I'm using a Canon RF 24-105 f4.0 L lens for most of my video shooting. Nevertheless, this video was key to putting together a fantastic rig. Thanks again :-)

    • @ashstonk
      @ashstonk  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ hey buddy, yes you’re correct if I’m using zoom lens I don’t use the matt box support but I’m pretty much a prime shooter so even then I don’t use the Matt box support. However, I find myself not using the support match these days as it’s easier when swapping out lenses.

      @@ashstonk Where it can be useful is if you use a follow focus - it can help keep the lens barrel steady - at lease that's the theory - I haven't tried it yet. Still waiting for a few parts, lol. Cheers and thanks again!

      I love my R6 but I'm pretty sure Canon is trying to drive me crazy, lol. I just discovered that when recording to a remote device (Ninja V) if you trigger the recording in camera, the recording stops after 30 minutes even though you are not actually recording to the camera's SD card. OK - so I just trigger the recording on the Ninja V, you say? Sure, but then the screen saver kicks in to shut the screen down on the R6 after so many minutes (to a maximum of 30 minutes). You can keep on recording to the Ninja V, that's not a problem but you know what doesn't work when the screen turns off? Manual focus. Holy crap! So if you are using a wireless follow focus (such as the MagicFIZ from SmallRig) and you thought you could keep on adjusting the focus remotely, you would be wrong! After 30 minutes, manual focus stops working and you need to prod the R6 to wake up the screen. This is with firmware version 1.9.0, btw. Thought I'd post this here since this is such an amazing cinema rig build tutorial (I've now built mine with most of what you described - I'm very happy with it - big thanks, Ashston). Peace.

    Move the monitor to the swivel handle, that way the screen follows your own movements (it will always point in the direction of the operator), then move your mic to the tophandle (I prefer the side at an angle because it reduces totat rig height. Lovely setup!

    I built out the exact same rig with an R6 mk ii, although I used a DTAP 4 way cable splitter so I could add a MagicFiz wireless focus with handle grip for focusing. It shoots 6K ProresRAW which looks way better. That option shoots in CLOG2/cinema gamut on the Ninja V+, and gives superior footage to the CLOG3/BT2020 ProResHQ option. If you use the RF f2 28-70 lens you’ll need the next size up matte box 2660 with the 114mm thread. This looks almost as good as Red Komodo X footage in my tests.

However I’m not sure what gimbal you are using, but witj the RS2 you can get a plate that connects to be v Mount battery at the bottom of the gimbal. I think Tilta does it. Excellent video Ashston. I own the R6 and Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art lens and it’s a perfect combination. This lens is super sharp and I’m really happy with it.. I’m looking for a compact rig set up and this video has been super useful, thank you. I like the SmallRig setup however the only thing that is stopping me from purchasing is the the SmallRig logo. I don’t particularly like it and the fact that they put the logo on every component makes it look worse in my opinion.. besides that the shape and design of each component looks very sleek and the way you put it together looks perfect..

    • @ashstonk

      Hey buddy, thank you so much for watching and I couldn’t agree with you more. I hate the logo myself, especially now they put that red logo in the front of the cage but you know what I just bite the bullet and get on with it because it looks so sexy and pro when you are working with it. I just ignore the logo, you can always paint over it lol or stick gaffer tape on it. Yeah it’s the perfect set up for the r6/r5 and yes, the Sigma 50 1.4 is truly one of the sharpest lenses I’ve ever used actually I own 20, 35 & 50 Sigma art lens. Quick question. I know the R6 Mk2 has a lot of video upgrades to the mk1. Can the R6 Mk1 shoot raw when recording to an atomos recorder, or are you stuck with IPB ?

    • @ashstonk
      @ashstonk  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, thank you for watching unfortunately No the R6 mark 1 has no raw capabilities but it’s still a very great camera and when pair with atomos the apple ProRes file is amazing. I have since sold my R6 mk1 to get the R6 mk2 purely because of the amazing video capabilities and 6K raw opposed to the 8K raw, which was a overkill R5

    With an external monitor (like a Atomos Shinobi) connected, will the R5’s back LCD still work? Or does it black out when an HDMI connection is made? I think I’ve changed all of the HDMI settings around and the LCD stays black until I pull the HDMI cable.

    • @ashstonk

      It should stay on. U need to check the setting in camera.

      I have checked. Still only showing on the Shinobi. I wonder if it’s because I’m recording 4K 60?

    • @ashstonk
      @ashstonk  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ericgrayphoto no the shinobi can handle 4k60. Ok I’m camera menu shoot 8. The hdmi display needs to be camera + monitor

      If that doesn’t work go to yellow menu which’s the rench and check ur screen settings. Shud be on auto1 or screen

    Hello, I use this with a canon 85mm lens and it looks like the matte box is too heavy and causing a lens error whenever I tilt the rig downwards. If I use the rod clamp to support the mattebox rhen the lens is locked and not able to focus since it comes in and out while trying to focus. Is it just the lens that is
    not compatible?

    • @ashstonk
      @ashstonk  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey thank you so much for watching. Perhaps try using it without the support clamp because you don’t really need the support clamp at all. I just put it on there just for some extra security but you don’t really necessarily need it. None of all my lens is our prime, so I don’t have no issues with the lenses. Don’t move at all so maybe Try without the support for the mat box or and then you can zoom in and out because once I use it on my canon 24-70 which is a zoom lens and I just did not put the support clamp on so that the box can move freely forward and backwards

      @@ashstonk Thank you ao much for your response! I get the same error even withour the aupport clamp but I forgot to mention a major fact ; I upgraded the mini matte box for the Multifunctional Modular Matte Box which is double to weight compare to the mini. Do you think this is the issue?

      @@Arismercury hey buddy I think it’s the lens has a problem. A friend of mine was using her 24-70 on her Canan r62 body and she kept having this error she took it to the repair centre and they said it was the lens.

      adding quickly all the prices on the links mentioned it would be £1145 (including the Atomos but no including the camera)

    Hi great demonstration. Would you know if a 7.4 foot output will power a Canon R5C? Your battery says 8 volt. I am looking into smaller battery solutions for a lighter set up and a lot of battery plates say either 12 volt or 7.4?

    • @ashstonk
      @ashstonk  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it will because batteries for the r5/r6/r5c are 7.2 Volts. Thx for watching. Also most v mount plates have a 7.2 V output but for some reason small rig v mount plate went with the 8 V.. so ideally I can put a small battery on here but it will still output 8V because of the v mount plate that I’m using.. hope this helps..

    • @TheHitchcockBlues
      @TheHitchcockBlues 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ashstonk I just saw it says 7.2 volts as you say. Would that mean anything about 7.2 volts would potentially damage your camera though? Like you are using the 8 volt on your rig?

    • @ashstonk
      @ashstonk  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheHitchcockBlues no it will be fine. the camera can handle it. Its just what the battery outputs…. Just don’t go about 8V. Plus im sure the dummy battery acts as a volt controller.. just looking at a plug-in adapter and the adapter output 8 V some, so the dummy battery plays a significant part in alternating the correct current i guess…. I mean i shot a whole wedding with no issue
