I walked out of the movie midway in 2009 after shelling around 200 bucks in a Sobo theatre. 'What a crap film!' I thought to myself at that time. I was 27 then. I again came across it on Amazon in 2018. I bet 'Luck by chance' is one of the finest hindi movies of that decade. The movie was truly ahead of its time. If Zoya had made this film today, it would have had worked wonders at the box office. Hats off to Zoya Akhtar!
Today I was about to watch luck by chance on Amazon Prime Video, just before it when I was scrolling you tube recommendations this interview arrived and now I know director's perspective and review of movie. Now I am excited to watch this movie in just few minutes
Luck by chance has so much rewatchability. And everybody gave great performances. Even actors who are normally mediocre, like Hrithik (who for the first and last time did an interesting character) was great in this movie. I have to conclude it is because of the direction. Zoya is good!
Watched the film yesterday, loved loved loved it. So many issues have been highlighted in a nuanced manner including but not restricted to nepotism. Also, yesterday I was thinking from the point of view of someone who is born in the industry, and I thought the same thing you said. What is the person's fault, and why would the person not use the opportunity coming his or her way. Also loved Sona'a character, she came off as the hero to Vikram's anti-hero. My heart went out to her, but story ended beautifully for her.
Lovely interview! Much needed! But, I feel that the question about doubting your own instinct cannot be answered by someone who is financially so successful. First time filmmakers who don't have any back up and are financially less able, they doubt themselves more often.
I remember watching Luck by Chance in a theatre and coming out thinking I get all of it, but what was the point the movie was trying to make. Considering she spoke so much about a director's point of view, maybe I need to go back and see it again.
5:32 - 5:39 - "Nepotism is not a problem" - Both ZOYA and FARHAN at different times. I can't believe that they made an honest and unfiltered film like Luck by Chance. They act like Dimple Kapadia and Isha Sharvani's characters from the film :/ How thoroughly disappointing. Why do industry born people say shit like "So much for nepotism"? Just because outsiders struggle, work really hard and make it does not mean "NEPOTISM DOES NOT EXIST" or "SO MUCH FOR NEPOTISM". Just because SRK, Rajkummar Rao, Richa Chaddha are successful and Fardeen Khan, Zayed Khan and Abhishek Bacchan are not, doesn't mean the latter 3 didn't benefit from nepotism (they very much did, the fact that Abhishek Bachchan still gets films and Sharman Joshi doesn't proves that). It means that the first three worked extremely hard and developed their craft in a way the latter three didn't. As you yourself said Zoya, Reema had the right attitude/perspective which, when she shared with you, you also benefited from. If you don't have the right attitude/perspective, you won't succeed regardless of where you're from (though you are given many more chances after failure if you're from the industry, ref. Abhishek's 17 flops in a row). And I'm sure Reema struggled in many other ways you're not even aware of, because from your myopic viewpoint, you see that 'This woman who comes from Assam made a film before me so nepotism doesn't exist, boo hoo'. Your only issue was that actors were saying no to you. Must've hurt to 'sit and struggle' through that :'( She must've had 50 other issues in getting her film MADE in the first place.
@@loveamazingstuff12 She said that nepotism is not a problem/star kids don't have it easy aka "So much for nepotism!" Her exact words are not "nepotism does not exist", but she's disregarding it's major role in the industry. My bad though, so I've made a change in my comment.
@@avikdickens4988 I understand what you're trying to say but with all due respect I'm sure Zoya realises the extent and consequences of nepotism. She is an intelligent woman, and I took her "so much for nepotism" as a joke she said and she too herself laughed after it.
@@loveamazingstuff12 It's easy to put a view out there (especially one which may be controversial) through the medium of laughter, which is what she did. She stated her view on nepotism in an offhand remark.

When someone says the movie was way ahead of its time, what they necessarily mean in bollywood and indian context, is the movie was way ahead of internet. Regular audience until 2010 was not exposed to foreign films, especially hollywood except superhero films, and were unaware how things can be said subtly without spoon feeding and how you look at a film not just as a story or news event asking things like 'hota kya hai movie me' and 'message kya tha' but to understand the characters of the movie and what they go through is what the movie is about. Even though not all people value this content today, thankfully exposure to world cinema has made a good amount of people understand better art.
Zoya- you are so much fun to watch and so clear hearted to listen to!!! You really made my head clear about something i am working on right now! It was like a god sent video!!! -love
i love the way Anupama conducts the interview. The questions do not insult the intelligence of either the interviewee or the viewers. You need to do more of these! And please do more of those movie analysis with Rahul and Sucharita. I haven't seen one of those in ages!
Luck by chance is really a good film, in those days I don’t remember how the film promotions used to be, but I honestly had not heard about it’s release or anything until I watched it on Amazon, so film promotion could be a reason why it failed at the box office?
I loved the movie really and had watched it in theaters too. Was seriously aghasted that this movie did not do well on the box office in terms of bussiness. But I think it was ahead of its time movie. If it were to release now it would hv earned a lot of money. I even liked ur candid interview with Vicky kaushal. Job well done. Thanks again
@@rahulray9983 Thats the only way you can do it to make it real. How will we connect with the nepotism unless we see the stars actually playing themselves. Having an unknown actor play hrithik roshan and say those lines would not have had the same impact !!
I don't think it was ahead of its time.I think the reason it didn't do well in the box office was because the audience failed to grab the subtleness with which the messages were conveyed in the film

Her comment on nepotism got me thinking if it exists in the society, it probably exists in fields where education is not required like politics, Bollywood, family businesses, if I say my brother is in IIT take me too, or my father is a software engineer In Google so Google give me a job then what I will get is a kick in the butt.
Idk why they they point out nepotism for other professions as soon as topic comes up. Bollywood and other film industry has media spotlight and platform. The least they could do is be aware of what they're putting out in terms of quality of work, problems and or issues on the industry be it nepotism or workplace harrasment. They should focus on that and not divert and say it's everywhere so what's the big deal. Like you said it's not everywhere and nepo won't work as easy as it does in film industry. How about ask the question it's easy to have a career in bollywood due to nepotism compared to other professions.
Rasika Mahabal ‘nepotism’ in other fields doesn’t mean direct entry! Sure, you cannot get an IT job because of your parent or sibling, but if you wish to go into that field, the connection does help! The rest is up to your own talent :)
loveamazingstuff12 connection doesn’t help at google like companies and I have tried 😄, all I got was a kick in the butt, metaphorically. got into Microsoft but didn’t know a soul in MS. Anyhow, the point is it doesn’t exist everywhere and they should stop saying it does.
@@rasikameeramahabal6292 Maybe it didn't work in your case, but connections do help you get to a lot of places in life. If you know or are related to any minister or politician, your life does become easier. Even in America, if your parents are Ivy League students, you can be admitted into Ivys through 'Legacy.' If you are born to businessmen, chances are you are likely to inherit the business. You of course would know about kingships. Nepotism DOES and has always existed in many walks of life and this is simply a fact. :) Plus, even if you have tried using your connections at Google to further your position or something similar, is it really much of a surprise that star kids try to leverage the fame and power of their parents? ;)
You are simply quoting my original comment which was - "it probably exists in fields where education is not required like politics, Bollywood, family businesses" you are giving me the same examples of nepotism in politics, bollywood, business and sports - one can not start or work in a company like amazon based on connections!

Zoya, you go girl! I have to say that I did watch this movie in the theater, and it remains to be my go-to movie. On the other hand, about Nepotism, no one is expecting the insiders to be apologetic. Although, yes, to be acknowledging of their privilege. It will not take away from their talent and hardwork, they can actually see that conversation as a chance to talk about their struggles as star kids.
I appreciate people who know privelage and does equaly as good as a family member who is already successful in their fields. Case in point Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson. Jon Voight and Angelina jolie. The Coppola Family. Compared to bollywood many failed examples in bollywood industry.
Zoya and Farah Khan look so alike but boy look at their sensibilities. Infact look at the sibling duo, Farah-Sajid Vs Zoya-Farhan. Their whole outlooks and outputs are poles apart.
Zoya´s Luck By Chance was good, Dil Dhadakne Do was average but her #Zindagi Na Milega Dobara which celebrates life & friendship was pure magic & commercial cinema at its best.
No mention about Hrithik ? A Superstar playing the Superstar with all the Superstar traits, that's not a role which everyone would take up. And Hrithik just nailed it.

Great choice for the series. One of the best hindi films in recent times, did not feel that Zoya Akhtar was a debutante director.
Thank you for adding the 2mins with Srk in the film. One of the most powerful scenes I've seen.
It was amazing.
She is so raw, honest and real, which is the core of her movies as well. Awesome!
Favorite Director. Period.
Avik Dickens When did she say nepotism doesn’t exist??
I really love Zoya as filmmaker and luck by chance is one of the movie that is keeping my passion and dream of becoming a filmmaker, thanks Anupama Ma'am for this amazing interview.
I absolutely love her personality..your strong stand is something that i look upto and want to emulate in my own career and life as well..its high time us girls get inspiration from successful strong women like you instead of Disney princess or damsel actresses..lots of love and power to you zoya ma'am😘
Anupama literally asked the same question multiple times.... “ what did the failure of luck by chance teach you” in different versions
Love her movies and her thought process. Very clear and engaging. I love interviews which focus on the craft of story telling!
13:44 Amazing question.
Zoya- you are so much fun to watch and so clear hearted to listen to!!! You really made my head clear about something i am working on right now! It was like a god sent video!!!
-love
I just love Zoya Akhtar, she is so good, thorough. Lately i am watching too many her videos. Gully boy is still in my head. Amazing lady
One of the most underrated bollywood movie.... Loved it...
She is So clear on her thoughts when she speaks
Zoya...is my favourite now..LuckbyChance..wat a movie how did I miss dis movie..
i love the way Anupama conducts the interview. The questions do not insult the intelligence of either the interviewee or the viewers. You need to do more of these!
And please do more of those movie analysis with Rahul and Sucharita. I haven't seen one of those in ages!
ZNMD always special film for Mee , Zoya ,Anurag , Imtiaz,Raju Hirani , Best fillm Maker of Bollywood
She is honest and quite practical without being naive.
After the interview I watched luck by chance again. and I did see things so differently.
Now that all the hue and cry about nepotism exist and every tom dick and harry has their point; still would hv done wonders. Thank you maam for this interview. I even liked ur candid interview with Vicky kaushal. Job well done. Thanks again
The irony is that the film makes a commentary on Nepotism even though the makers and the stars of the film are the products of Nepotism themselves
@@adityaramachandran2852 that's what . Audience are now exposed to such nuanced performences and are ready to accept movies which are out of the box.
@@shashank20able even then some films like CDI, TZP were working.......i agree that business will be a little better in metros today but thats about it.....verdict will still not even a Semi-Hit......audience is not really into certain films, thats it........Anurag Kashyap films r Flop even today for a reason.........awareness level of audience still needs maybe 10-20yrs to make these kinda films actually profitable
it is so refreshing to see a confident, intelligent, natural girl like Zoya. I love her movies and Luck by Chance was my favorite!
yess
Plus, even if you have tried using your connections at Google to further your position or something similar, is it really much of a surprise that star kids try to leverage the fame and power of their parents? ;)
You are simply quoting my original comment which was - "it probably exists in fields where education is not required like politics, Bollywood, family businesses" you are giving me the same examples of nepotism in politics, bollywood, business and sports - one can not start or work in a company like amazon based on connections!
One of the best director in India. I love to watch her interviews.
17:06 just rewatched that scene and don’t find anything wrong. Works perfectly fine for me. Don’t be unnecessarily harsh on yourself.
Film Industry - Talent + Hardwork + Luck. 👍
Directors like Zoya Aktar are one of the many pioneers of Revolutionizing BOLLYWOOD.....
In the movie Vikram's character says to SRK, "I can't even imagine what it must be like for you..."
These are literally my thoughts about Zoya. She is so goddamn talented, articulate, well read, well rounded, and with so much perspective. Can't imagine what it must be like to be her. Role model and inspiration forever!!
She is so very clear about what she is saying. I never missed her any interview on youtube. Love you Zoya n your movies❤
Of all Zoya's full-length feature films, LBC is on a whole different level altogether
This interview is every debut director's holy grail.
Love love love her work, her personality and ALL HER FILMS. Thank you #anupamachopra for an intelligent heartfelt conversation with her!!
one and only my favorite director at all times... you been an inspiration for me Zoya ma'am
Very enlightening interview :) I always felt Luck By Chance was her best film.Even in a single shot in this film, there were so many interesting things happening..She became commercial in her later films with all those horses, tomatoes and ships..
Zoya is my favrt Drector, love her movies, Luck By Chance is a marvel. Waiting for Gully Boy!
Lovely interview! I wish Zoya and Vidya collaborate in the future.
zoya you are my favourite director. You are the one who's work will be discuss even after 100 years!! you are much ahead of your time lady
wow what timing of this beautiful interview...saw this movie again after soo many years last week and i was still in awe of the
movie... seriously the movie was ahead of its time.... first time i had seen a movie which was soo subtle in expressing the emotions ..... every scene of luck by chance is important... not even a single line or glances exchanged between the actors is wasted....thank you Zoya Akhtar for making this amazing movie and thank you Anupama Chopra for this lovely interview :)
Zoya Akhtar is a smart director. Keep doing the great work!!!
I like all her movies. Her Dil Dhadakne Do portrayed the reality of high class people in India.
Zoya and Farah Khan look so alike but boy look at their sensibilities. Infact look at the sibling duo, Farah-Sajid Vs Zoya-Farhan. Their whole outlooks and outputs are poles apart.
Just rewatched Luck By Chance and rewatched this. Full circle. Love the film. Love the interview. Love Zoya
Thank you this was amazing and helpful..... please bring Farhan in this section
Zoya´s Luck By Chance was good, Dil Dhadakne Do was average but her #Zindagi Na Milega Dobara which celebrates life & friendship was pure magic & commercial cinema at its best.
Amazing movie just way before its time ...A gem of a movie.
The Aktar family is so talented.
No mention about Hrithik ? A Superstar playing the Superstar with all the Superstar traits, that's not a role which everyone would take up. And Hrithik just nailed it.
true
Problem With Acting Is That It Looks Easy On Screen & TV And Many People Think It's Very Easy To Do Anyone Can Do It . 😕
She is an amazing director
I really like her energy and her straightforwardness attitude. I'm going to go find that movie to watch. I also like to see Anupama interviews.
Farhan Akhtar's first film .. Dil chahta hai, please do a interview with him ..
I like movies about movies . Luck By Chance for me ,is in the league of The Player ,Swimming With The Sharks ,Tropic Thunder . Those who wonder how bollywood works , LBC is the beginners guide .
You are lovely Zoya!!!! Really best for the next film :)
Zola is awesome. Loved listening to her. May she continue making fabulous films for a long long time to come.
