    This video demonstrates the procedure to fix a common problem on 2012-2014 Honda CR-V EX/EX-L, and 2012-2013 Civic EX/EX-L/Si. Many owners report a loud buzzing or static noise heard by the recipient of their calls while using the Hands Free Link (bluetooth) system in the car. The problem has been identified by Honda as a faulty mic, and there is a service bulletin (July 2014) available which details the procedure for replacing it with a new
    P/N: 39182-SMA-003
    You can choose to either replace the mic, or you can use the following procedure to refurbish your existing mic for little to no cost. The entire process takes only about 15-20 minutes. The Honda procedure can be found by googling "Honda CRV HFL buzz." My local Honda dealer (Bay Area, CA) wanted $331.25 (parts and labor) to replace the mic.
    Hope this video is helpful - I initially struggled to find any relevant information on this seemingly widespread problem.

    Thank you for the video. I too was experiencing a squeal/static. While following your instructions for removal, I noticed that the microphone connector was loose. It is a poorly designed connector. It appeared to be plugged in. But it was not "clicked" into place. I removed the microphone anyway for inspection. The contacts appeared good, no additional cleaning necessary. The original cloth covering appeared fine. I reassemble to microphone, making sure the green connector to the microphone was firmly set in place and tested the phone system. It worked perfectly. The squeal/static was gone. I suspect that 99% of the problems that were fixed by people using this video could have been the same as my own. Your procedure fixes the loose green connector when they reassemble the unit. There was no grease, dirt, corrosion to remove in my device. As for vibration damping with cloth, it proved unnecessary. Since the screw holding the microphone in place did an excellent job of removing vibration from within the unit. I had no rattling issues before or after reassembly. So, in my case, the only necessary step was to re-seat the green microphone connector. For those using this video, take note of the green connector before removal. Is it already loose? Does in just need to be pushed back into place? I'd like to know. Thanks again

    Just fixed the the noise on my 2012 CRV. Everyone I would call from the car would say what is that horrible noise on your phone. As of this afternoon I called my wife and she did not believe I was calling from the car. Your video is excellent. I was afraid of breaking the plastic tabs when disassembling, but by following your exact procedure all went well. Thank You

    Thanks, it solved our problem. We made one modification since I think most of the problem is coming from vibration. Instead of wrapping the cloth around the mic, we used a bicycle tire inner tube. We felt the rubber was about the right thickness. We cut a piece about the same size as the cloth you suggested. The top of the cut out piece went up to the lines located on both sides of the mic. We then cut two holes in the rubber so the sound could get though the rubber. We cut them out where it looks like two mini speakers are located on the bottom face of the mic. We left the rubber connected in the middle and on both sides of the holes so we would have a way to hold the rubber in place when it is inserted back into the holder. It is a tight fit on the sides when you push it back into its holder. It needs to be tight to eliminate the vibration. It has been working clearly now for about 3 months with no problems.

    You’re definitely a god among men. My son and I worked on his 2012 CR-V today, and if we’d figured out the small clips on the cover sooner, it would have been a snappy quick job. Fixed the awful Bluetooth feedback problem, and he doesn’t have to yell for me to hear when he’s in the road. Great fix, and thank you VERY much for sharing!!!

    I bought a 2012 Honda Civic a few weeks ago and was experiencing the exact same issue. I just did what you suggested in this video and made a call to the main person that was telling me about the noise and they told me that they no longer heard the sound in the background. I hope that it doesn't go back to doing the sound in a few weeks because this was an excellent suggestion. I'm glad that it appears to have fix the issue and hope it's not temporary.

    I had the same issue. In my case the buzz was probably caused by a faulty wire, or a grounding issue. I solved it by changing the wires of the electret microphone. If you peel the membrane at the bottom of the casing, you will uncover the microphone itself. It is nested in a rubber part. Pull the rubber out, and you will see a circuit board. The microphone has 2 contacts : + and ground. The ground wire was damaged, and there was a loose piece of zinc soldered to the ground contact (not sure why, as the microphone already has its own ground contacts). Long story short, I desoldered the + and ground wires, replaced them with new ones, and removed the loose piece of zinc. I used a basic soldering iron, some eutectic solder (63/37), and 2 pieces of wires gauge 22 AWG. I stuffed everything back in the rubber, casing, put the membrane back on and put back the map light - Did 3 test calls with 3 people, the buzz sound is gone.

    Your video style is fabulous. Every step clearly shown. Good use of speeded video; fast enough to get through the procedure, but not so fast you have to constantly pause and/or backup. Subtitles great! Not to say that your voice is unpleasant, but use of speech in these things slow the video down, and not everyone is a fan of “my” voice :). Excellent, and THANKS!

    • @timwong3532
      @timwong3532  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the kind words! I am also not a fan of my own voice, which contributed to the decision of using subtitles ;) Mostly though, it's to make editing easier and allows me to fast forward through the less interesting/time consuming bits. I appreciate the feedback, it's people like you who encourage me to keep producing content.

    You can also just punch the assembly pretty hard without removing it and it goes away instantly. Does come back hours, days, weeks later for no rhyme or reason...been punching mine for years. Your method may be working just because you are handling the mic.

    • @CrashingKites
      @CrashingKites 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I spent a few hours researching this issue before finding this video. Some people reported something similar to what you're describing (except they rubbed their finger over the microphone instead of the punch... haha). The theory was that static electricity may be building up around the microphone and that moving your hand over the area can help with dissipating it. I know little of static electricity, but maybe this method can help people for whom the buzzing has returned.

    For step 7 you said to remove the black cover. I have a 2013 Civic and plan on doing this. You mentioned CRV only. Is this back cover nonexistent on the Civic? And also wondering did you notice an improvement with the fabric (good idea!) Also do you know if thec also have an LED light on it? (Wondering because my Bluetooth mic never has been illuminated and I wonder if by purchasing a new mic it will give me a status light that works). Great video 👍

    • @timwong3532
      @timwong3532  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the fabric helped a bit (and certainly would not hurt). However, unfortunately the cleaning + fabric was only a temporary fix and the static came back after a few weeks, albeit not as loud. The only permanent fix for me was to replace the mic with a new unit from Honda.
      I'm not certain, but I believe the black cover is not present on the Civic. The little LED light is a different part of that assembly and is not affected by the bluetooth mic.

    Hi Tim, you’re saying below on one of the comments that the buzzing noise returned?

    • @timwong3532
      @timwong3532  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Chris, yes the "refurbish" method, re-using the existing mic, was not a long term solution for me but has worked for a few commenters here. I ended up replacing the mic with the new one and the problem has not returned since then.

    I just tried this last night. I think it definitely helps with the sound quality. But I think the bluetooth version that these radios are using is old and succeptible to interference. When I drove through a mcdonalds drivethru the other caller said they could here with intereference screeching. That's bluetooth issue, not microphone

    Is there something different about fixing the touring model, or is it just not listed here?

    I followed this on my 2013 Honda Accord. However for step 8, there is no tiny screw anywhere to be found. In fact, there is no little box like he took out...it's just an empty area. What da heck? Any ideas about this set up?

      I know this is a pretty late response, but this fix is for the crv and Civic, not the Accord. The Accord will have a different setup.
