    Being born and raised in Az has made me lazy. I can get good beans anywhere, so I never learned to how make my own. Cant wait to try this recipe :D

    Like the bullion, but check out chef John's recipe. Use all the liquid. The flavor is in the liquid.

      Please no... Don't encourage her. My husband can make the from scratch in less than an hour who's got 20hours to cook beans!!! I'll starve to dead by the time she's done with beans 😂

    Quick question...I've seen different versions of making refried beans ...on the stove, pressure cooker and crock pot...running bet with my wife...which is the most energy efficient...ie...uses the least amount of electricity?

      I want the answer to this as well.

      Ok this is my wife's account I'm Hispanic and I'm going to give you a simple way and most efficient that won't take 20hours to make.. always sort out and rinse the beans B4 cooking cover on water 1 to 2 inch put on high heat until it boils then take it out and rinse again replacing with fresh water same level this time you add salt taste the water for a personal saltines add a slice quarter onion 2 to 3 garlic cloves or more if you desire put on high heat again until starts to boil make sure to let the lid semi open so the nobles don't overflow then lower the heat to medium and check every 10 to 15 it should take 45 to 1 hour depending on the heat how you check is take one whole bean using 2 fingers smash together it should be smooth no crumbles once cooked reheat a pan with oil we prefer pork lard 1 to 2 table spoon depending on how much you are frying have same amount of garlic and onion or your preferred amount to integrate first if the oil is hot enough it should be ready within 30secons to 1min have the lid ready to cover the pan as soon as you drop the first spoon of beans bc it can spill hot oil and burn you use the strainer spoon to minimize liquids so you get a better and fester frying process I found that the best way to smash them is with the bottom of a glass but any method should work you I like to keep smashing and stirring up w/o adding water until you start seeing golden sticking to the pan at the point I just add the beans liquid to your liking and let it boiled for 10 minutes and your beans are ready I personally like it nice and liquidy don't worry if you pour more liquid then desired if you just boil for a bit longer it will thicken up again it will do this Every time you reheat them so you can just add more water but make sure to boiled for a good 10 mins every time you add fresh water or they go bad overnight if left at room temperature Also taste amazing if you just reheat them but not add water if you reFrye them with a bit more oil or lard make sure to see the golden sticking to the pan that's what gives it the taste the more you reFrye the better... The whole frying process should take no more than 20 to 25min

    You took way to many extra steps. My grandma Bejarano taught me our family recipe for beans and tortillas. Refried beans is what you do with your left over beans. You could've just as easily used a potato masher and mashed them in the pot with the juices they were cooked in you dont need all that other seasoning, all the flavor is in the juice in the crock pot. I get you probably weren't going for the traditional route but all you really need is salt, pepper, butter, and a little bit of lard in the crockpot to season them nothing else. Also you do not need to soak them over night especially cover they could ferment all you need to do is soak them in cold water for two to three hours rinse and then place in the crock pot and make sure they reach a boiling point so you dont make your family sick. I cook them 2 hours on high then 3-4 on low it allows the juices to thicken.

      Yum! I'm going to try it this way so you don't flavor the water with onion or garlic?

    • @YoungStephanieG
      @YoungStephanieG 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      And how much lard would you say to add? Do I add it in before I go to cook it along with the butter and salt & pepper..

      @joojoofoo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! Are you saying they don’t need to be “re-fried” at all? Like just mash them in the crockpot with the water it’s cooked in and that’s it? Or do they still need to be pan fried?

    • @CarolineChiasson
      @CarolineChiasson 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@joojoofoo Re-frying in a pan is not necessary, just mash them up and they are perfect :)

    • @ProudPapa26
      @ProudPapa26 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joojoofoo If you want the right texture, you need to refry it in the pan. Mashing it in the crock pot with all water it cooked in is not the way to go. And please do not use a processor like the video, that just makes it a bean paste. You may as well buy canned refried beans at that point.

    Looks great! Better than bouillon also has a vegetarian (vegan) chicken base which is amazing but I never thought to add it to beans.

    That is the HARDEST, SLOWEST WAY TO DO REFRIED BEANS. Get a pressure cooker and instead of soaking beans overnight, pre cook them for 3 or 4 min under pressure. Put in the condiments and cook under pressure for 16 to18 minutes, then pass them to a garlic infused olive oil and mash them. Good vid though.

      Thanks for the constructive criticism. Glad that way works for you! I have a crockpot and love to use it and don't have space or money for another kitchen tool right now. These beans are delicious! I make them all the time and everybody loves them. It really doesn't take that much time to make either. I like that I can come and go and do a little at a time. Soak overnight, easy. Crockpot, easy. Blender, easy. Simmer them down in pan with seasoning is what makes them great!

      Not everyone feels safe using a pressure cooker. I am one that does not. My aunt had one go off, and damaged her ceiling!

      It's a slow way to cook beans because she's using a *slow cooker* aka: a crock pot [[rolls eyes]]
