Should you use an extension cord to charge your Tesla? A lot of people debate this. BUT, I believe it is safe if you do it the correct way. The video above was made while testing charging on my 2021 Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus at 110V, a standard wall outlet, using a 50 foot long 12 gauge extension cord.
    Do's
-Use a 12 gauge, heavy duty extension cord. Note that these are much more expensive (and thick) than the typical extension cord, for a good reason. They are rated to carry higher loads of electricity safely
-15 amp, 1875 watts, 125V (volts) or higher is recommended
-3 prong grounded plug, obviously, since this is what your Tesla charger uses
-Buy as short a cord as possible - I recommend 10 feet, if you can get away with it. The longer the cord the harder it has to work to conduct electricity through it, thus your car may charge slower.
    Do NOT's
    - Don't use a standard, thin orange extension cord (16 gauge)!
If you use a common extension cord it could overheat and cause a fire. It also cannot carry the voltage that your Tesla needs to charge, so your rate of charge may be very slow.

Thank you!! You just helped me cut 2 hrs of my charging time by using a shorter extension cord. Had no idea extension cords take up voltage.

Word of warning from experience here, using the mobile connector with an extension cord at 230/240V 50hz like we have in Australia can work, but over long periods of time the mobile connector can start deciding not to accept any current because it detects a ground fault. This renders the mobile connector useless for any vehicle. This happened to me two times while using an extension cord, Tesla was happy to replace the mobile connectors free of charge but when they realised what was going on they told me to stop using an extension cord and that if it broke again no replacement would be given.

Wow, that is interesting, good to know! I’ve since stopped using an extension cord for charging unless absolutely necessary, and I’m glad I did!

@@marclovescars that’s good, it is fine to use it occasionally for small amounts of charge.

12 gauge can handle up to 25 amps realistically bro but for safety causes you can use 20 under 100 foot

Would the charge rate be better if you had a shorter extension cord like somewhere around 20'

In theory yes, though I tested a few extension cords of varying lengths and interestingly the charge rate was exactly the same.

can you use that to charge a tesla if u have a 240v 20amp ?

Hi. To charge using a 240V 20 amp circuit you’ll need to buy a heavy duty extension cord. NEMA 14-30, 10 gauge, often called a dryer extension cord because it works with a clothes dryer. It is a very thick, heavy extension cord. You’ll also need to buy the NEMA 14-30 adapter from Tesla so your Tesla charger can plug into the NEMA extension cord.
