This vid got buried by the algorithm! It didn't even come up when I searched "tech layoffs", only clips from major news outlets. It's probably a way to fight against misinfo and sensationalism for certain topics, but the news clips were sensationalized too...

I was laid off, btw I definitely do not recommend it! What I learned is to never get too comfortable in any role/position.
At the moment the job security is really poor in most of these industries, it’s all a business at the end of the day.. typically whats good for the company is bad for the employees and vice versa.
I read a comment from someone who said “Companies want us to above and beyond for them, but they won’t go above and beyond for us.”
Being laid off simply sucks and I don’t wish it upon anyone, I personally think some companies could’ve handled it better. Regardless I was appreciative of my time in the company.

Really sorry to hear that -- I agree. At the end of the day, the business will prioritize the company over individuals. I've learned not to take this personally, but it is still a difficult awakening especially after companies talking about how employees are "their priority" or "family." I'm learning now that we have to prioritize ourselves, too. Hope that you are able to find your next gig and wishing you all the best.

I'm glad that you mention that "you are not your job" so many people see their worth within their jobs. You've given really good advice I'm sure someone can get reassurance that things are gonna be okay by watching this videos.

Definitely - and it’s easier said than done for sure. Of course we want work to be meaningful and recognize success there as part of who we are. It doesn’t need to be black and white, but I do think it’s important to prioritize one’s own sense of self, well being, and other values before putting work as a focal point. Work doesn’t have to define us IF we don’t want it to. Thanks for watching and your comment!

I have worked in the tech sector for close to 30 years. What is going on now is just the industry recognizing they are not Immune to the macroeconomic forces that are impacting the rest of the economy. To keep it short, we entered a recession in the summer of 2022 after two quarters of negative GDP growth. Prices are way up, wages are flat, and people are deep in debt. I know there are generalizations, but they apply to a lot of people. When people are broke, they cut back on the frivolous and focus on the necessities. They pay for housing, food, utilities, clothing, medical, and secured debt like homes and autos. They get rid of fluff like entertainment (Netflix, etc.) and unneeded shopping (Amazon, etc.). The drop in sales caused advertisers to cut their budgets, which hit Social Media companies especially hard. Companies like Facebook, Twitter, etc., get the bulk of their profits from advertising and data mining. Social Media creates nothing of value, so they feel the pain the most. I agree this is just starting but I don’t think it will be short. The tech industry is full of fat that needs to be trimmed. Finally, job security is a myth. If someone else can decide whether you can work or not, you are not secure. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for your insight here, definitely agree with many of the points. I also think there’s probably even bigger macroeconomic factors that are in play that we don’t see right now, but let’s see in a few years.

I feel like I went through this process twice already in the last 6 months. First, in my own company earlier this year, and now my husband's role at Google is at risk. I feel like in these uncertain times we are again reminded of the importance of community, the safety and emotional support it provides. Also, while we may lose our jobs, we will never lose the skills, experience and the network we built. Thank you for sharing such knowledgeable content! Best wishes from London

I'm so sorry to hear that -- especially just after having your own job taken away, to have your husband's at risk too. That is so stressful. I 10000% agree with your sentiment about community; the only thing getting me through my own layoff was with the support of my husband, family, ex-colleagues, etc. Those connections that we've made are the most important at work and I'm so lucky to that network. Please take care, you got this 🤍
