How does a hover mower work?

  • Hover lawnmowers work by creating a cushion of air between the lawnmower and the ground. This makes them light, and extremely maneuverable, allowing you to move them in any direction - unlike traditional rotary lawnmowers. Flymo was the inventor of the very first hover mower in the world basing the hover principle on that of a hover craft. I'm confused by the fact that they work by forcing air down and out from under the blades. Doesn't that pretty much guarantee that the grass will be forced away from the blades, rather than drawn into them?

      I have the same question.

The air is forced around the perimeter of the deck. In the center of the deck, it draws the grass up like a traditional mower.

Doesn't cut grass worth a bag full of used nails...........but great for cutting snow !

@@lawnmowerdude IDK what you mean by "traditional" but no mover does draw the grass up. The fan above the blades is used to force the air into the bottom tray from above. This stream of air is used to cool the engine/motor (especially the electric ones). Most modern mowers create a path of least resistance by opening the back, where the air stream blows the cut grass into the collecting basket.

@@dushk0 Either you misunderstood him or you don't know how a lawn mower works because a traditional mower does suck the grass up into the blade.

Most mowers work by drawing air upward, causing grass to straighten prior to being cut. How does the instead downward airflow not cause cutting issues?

How does this maintain a constant height? I mean, when you enter a though grass area, it can decrease the speed of the blade/fan and cut a bit lower

When used on long grass they don't work so easily though! Quite alot of effort is required to push them. Speaking as an L470 owner.

how are these lawn mowers? i see them on takalot online here and i want to know if it is worth buying?
versus one with wheels, i dont think i understand how it works and how it can NOT be hard to push around ?
the one i want to get is an electric Ryobi model 1300 watt

@@one-day-at-a-time4134 I actually got one and it worked fair.
It was a little body muscle intense for certain parts of the lawn and others it was really smooth. It is ideal for really short and regularly cut grass but not when u leave it to look like a jungle.

@@one-day-at-a-time4134 yeh it is because u had uneven lawn , yah. I had difficulty in parts of mine, but the rest was like its a hoverboard or something , like it just glides. Its really more ideal for less overgrown lawn and of course the not to bumpy type garden.
It was on sale and it was Ryobi so i just took it.

I use a different brand, but they all work on the same principle. My advice is to pay $100 more and get a real one. They're good for a cheap quick fix, but save yourself the the trouble. With these, one, you have to retrace your path a few times to get a clean cut; and two, these don't work well on high grass.
