Just as a heads up, a lot of context for this show can be found in later seasons of the Clone Wars and Rebels, which are set before this show. So any questions you have about the Mandalorians and its culture will most likely be answered there!
Also after season 2 of this show, you gotta watch Book of Boba Fett to get some pretty huge context to the start of Season 3. Otherwise you gonna be baffled like hell in S3 Ep1 aha. Won’t spoil it ofc but thought I’d let you know!

If he’s not watching it in release order, then it’s his choice to be confused. That’s a risk that you take when you watch things out of release order.
Pre empire means that's it's harder to track in a sense, most smugglers or bounty hunters didn't want the empire tracking where they've been and such
These shows were mostly written or produced by a man named Dave FIloni, he is now the CCO of lucasfilm. His career is took off after the original Avatar the last airbender and then Clone Wars. If you ever see this comment it will prob be after recording the entire season 1 of mando but honestly clone wars is where its at because all the shows that come after, live action and animated, reference that show, they used it to build the world of star wars even when Lucas was still around, its an amazing experience that gives you the foundation to really enjoy all of starwars tv

Jon Favreau wrote All of Season 1, then all of season 2 except 2 episodes, Season 3 he wrote most and co-wrote a few. most episodes where directed by different directors but they all collabratively worked togher with Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau

To avoid confusion with the timeline and characters, I highly suggest in the strongest that you finish the Clone Wars and Rebels first to help give you more context. For seasons 2 and 3 of The Mandalorian especially!!!

Good thing about the terminology is you normally get the definition through context of how it’s used.
You likely know this already but here's a brief summery, at this point, the main imperial government has fallen, but there's still imperials in the galaxy in what's called "The Imperial Remnant", the main galactic government now is "The New Republic", Beskar is a metal only found on the Mandalorians home planet of Mandalore, the Imperials, about 10 - 15 years before completely wiped out the planet and strip mined the ore, but it's considered sacred to the mandalorians, and they'll kill anyone using it who isn't a mandalorian.

This takes place after Episode VI: Return of the Jedi and before Episode VII: The Force Awakens. Whatever fell in The Rise of Skywalker was the First Order/Final Order, not the Empire.
Additionally, I'd recommend waiting to watch season 2 until you've finished the Clone Wars and mainly Rebels, because it contains major spoilers about a certain character, but if that would take to long in your opinion, go ahead

So this takes place 5 years after Return of The Jedi (ep.6) and the empire isn't necessarily gone. Yes the vast majority has been wiped out after the battles of Endor and Jakku (the desert planet Rey is on in ep.7) but there are still small remenants of the Empire in hiding scattered across the galaxy kind of like how the last of the Jedi were scattered and hiding after Revenge of The Sith (ep.3). Also for beskar it is known as one of the best/rarest metals to obtain because its only obtained on Mandalore (home world of mandalorians) similar to kyber crystals which are the crystals that are used for lightsabers are found on Ilum. Eventually in the clone wars you do learn of Mandalore and more about mandalorians but of course i wont say anything else on that to prevent spoilers, hope this all helps!

So this is where we get mad again about not watching it in timeline order, because Clone Wars explains A LOT, and the repeating issue I see from people watching Mandalorian without any other knowledge is they think all Mandalorians are like this. Which is false

You probably shouldn’t watch past season 2 until you finish the Clone Wars (and maybe even Star Wars Rebels) because there are a recurring characters and plot elements from both.
He shouldn't be watching it at all until he's at least finished Clone Wars minimum

Some info for you. Mando is great and watching it without clone wars will be an interesting experience. At this point from what Ive seen you react to, you only know two Mandolorians, Jango Fett from episode 2 who is the blueprint for all the clones, and his son Boba Fett from the original trilogy. Clone wars series has alot more info on Mandolorians and itll be fun seeing you react. This show also takes place after SW Rebels which is the sequel to Clone Wars, a fantastic show in its own right. Youll want to finish Clone wars, Rebels, and Mando seasons 1 and 2 before watching the Ahsoka live action show. Now you are getting into the Filoniverse lol.👌🏽
To be honest, I wouldn't start Mando if I wouldn't have watched full Clone Wars and Rebels before that. You will miss many things easily this way

The first Order is during the sequels and was destroyed at the end of 'Rise Of Skywalker'... The Empire in 'Revenge Of The Sith' fell because of Luke turning Vader back to the light.. this episode takes place roughly 5 years after 'Return Of The Jedi'... Luke is still really young at the end of the Empire's reign, but he's an old hermit during the sequels..So it makes no sense for this to take place after the sequel trilogy.

The Mandalorian = people of Mandalora, but in this series, the bounty hunter you see now on screen.
Beskar is a rare metal from Mandalore and a metal chiefly used by Mandalorians. As you read, it deflects blaster fire and repels lightsaber attacks--don't worry, this series will show you what all it can do =)
By the way, this series takes place AFTER episode 6, Return of the Jedi, a mere five years after the Empire fell. Disney has given itself 29 years to play with, building up to episode 7, feeling and expanding to the story the newer prequels didn't really explain, leaving fans to feel very disappointed with what we got.
The Bad Batch, Fallen Jedi (video game), Star Wars Rebels, The Mandalorian, the Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka all take place during the time between the Return of the Jedi and the Force Awakens.

Mando's an awesome series early on, but I think watching it concurrently with The Clone Wars isnt the greatest move. I'd personally reccomend holding off watching season 2 until after watching at least season 4 or 5 of TCW, though preferably after season 7, as it introduces one of the bigger characters of Mando seasons 2 and 3 as well as a specific "item" of significance, but i wont spoil what that is.
