@@stanbtsforaclearskin In the first movie, not everyone did. That would and could easily strain their voices, they will do these scenes like 25 times...
I would love to see an entire b-roll shot of some of the performance routines from one camera angle without edits. I'm quite sure they did complete runthroughs on this. The pieces in here are massive teases
@@berniethebear967 Because other people can explain it in better terms than I can. "The term B-roll originates from the early days of film, when editors inserted supplemental footage, or B-roll, into the main footage, or A-roll, to hide visible lines where two pieces of film were joined. In modern film and video production, B-roll describes all of the footage that isn't the main action"
As an actor, it's sometimes awkward to do...You get invested, and a lot of the time there's a little bit of the real person intertwined into the performance. It's hard, but it's freakin magical to do well. :3
I don't think they're actually singing live on set. Anna Kendrick said in an interview that she insisted that when she is singing alone, she wanted to sing live on set. That implies that all the other scenes, they're not.
It implies that they don't ALWAYS sing live. They probably don't sing in scenes with to much movements during those (e.g. the finals), and sing but are muted and backuped during scenes with to many cuts in them.
Well actually they record it in a studio and then they sing it live while they record and then post the studio version over the live so it sounds better and they sing it so the words can actually line up.
They go through 4 weeks of A Capella training because they need to still record the songs. A Capella training helps them get a feel when they perform it on stage.
these clips are very nice. these tell that the actors, actresses and especially the staff really did a very good job for this A-C-A - awesome MOVIE.....
Usually for movies like this, they always record the songs first then play them back during filming while the actors usually sing over it. Otherwise their voices would be tired or it wouldn't be as clear.
Ok, so they DO sing live (most of them can sing very well) HOWEVER, they mostly do it so it fits with the click track (pre-recorded vocals) which will be added on later. So basically, they are singing along live here but we will hear the pre-recorded version on the big screen. That's what most films do. Les Miserables is the FIRST musical film ever to sing fully live vocals all the way through. Hope that makes sense. :)
i've watched this movie everyday anna's voice really turns me On and On and On..she's so adorable, lovely yet so amazing.wow..!i wish i see her in person.riff off's scene made me admire anna more also their last performance, i can't believe she can sing that good....so amazing!
i read an interview that the person in charge of the music did. my understanding was the actors did their own singing and they even worked without auto tune. they did the singing in a studio and everything was later compiled together and they lip sang to their own voices while filming.
Yea he did! I think, the songs, the did perform on the stage with dancing and so on is playback.. but did you watch the first part? It seemed pretty real in the bus-scene, don't you think?
Julia Michels: This movie was really unique because we have what we call the "on cameras," which is people singing on camera, so all of those songs had to be chosen, cleared and pre-recorded before we went to the first day of shooting. ... i read this somewhere. and it sounds like the songs WERE pre-recorded
They definitely had a script although a lot of it was improvised. Some things they said may not have made it into the movie. The had to redo scenes a few times and the ones the directors thought were the best made it into the movie. :)
Most movies shoot them while they're singing live and then when they're editing it, they add in a recorded version. The live singing is so the lip movement will be realistic.
i also found this "At the recent Los Angeles press day I got to sit down with Anna Kendrick for an exclusive interview. We talked about how she got involved, her reaction to the finished film, the great script, if she was nervous to sing and dance on camera, what it was like to sing live on set"
Its both. They have the actors sing over the playback to make sure their mouths match the music. Then they cut out the sound and put the song over it in post-production. They're singing along but their mics probably aren't even on.
They sang live for every singing scene, including the finals but there was enhancement in post prod on some of the songs, most notably the finals (deeping the bass notes that Chloe is supposed to sing). You can tell that they're singing live in those reels. Any off tempo in the final edited scenes of the movie comes from the editing.
Oooh lemme dive into this convo hehe They sing live (some lip sync) in order for them to truly be in the moment AND they also prerecorded the songs (for cleaner/improved vocals) and play it during filming. It's called "looping" --- and that's pretty normal in a movie. You don't expect them to sing a song over & over for each shot for more or less 10 hours a day right? Or else -- hello nodules!
a lot of parts, like the cup scene, were probably on the spot. but not all of them could be because of all of their dancing. like the group around 2:52 were dancing like crazy, theres no way you can sing while doing that
Actually, miss attitude, If you read what I said, Les Mis did "fully live vocals" ....Across The Universe was only partially live. I did my research. I was only trying to help make things clearer. Thanks for your comment though. :)
OMG IN THE MOVIE IT IS LIP SYNC! THEY HAVE TO SING IN THE RAW FOOTAGE SO THEY CAN SYNC THE MUSIC WITH THEIR LIPS OMG HOW MANY TIMES WILL I HAVE TO SAY THIS
No one sings live in recorded TV shows or movies anymore. It's not bad or wrong, it just makes it easier to film (then the performers don't have to focus on making everything perfect (singing, dancing, acting because they film every scene MULTIPLE times to get different angles). It also just ensures great sound quality. Like one commenter mentioned, there are many scenes in this film where the singing is live, but the bigger musical numbers are pre-recorded. End of argument, please?
i doubt they did this live... It makes it much easier for production for them to sing along to playback to ensure that the takes are the same (timing/dancing/variation in singing). Also, if it were live, it would incorporate a whole other level of needs for production with recording good, mixable sound in post, which would require more crew, not to mention, it is MUCH easier to record in studio to make it perfect so that the cast can concentrate on acting with playback. its more efficient
I thought the performance was shot one by one, but they shot it live for each performance+ audience instead. I thought the bus scene was real, it was green screen instead. wow hollywood never fails to surprise me

they only have to sing to play back so keep the timing
Everyone doesn’t sing on set except for Anna Kendrick. I red about it

My fave treblemakers song

it was like a juice machine with hose where the puke-like substance gushes out
