Hi RedEffect there's one thing I would like to point out: engine torque doesn't matter. I don't blame you for making the mistake that more 'torquey' engine is better: it is popularized by car journalists who tend to know little about how cars work, and car makers advertise this figure fully knowing it's BS. What really determines how fast a vehicle accelerates or how much load it pulls is torque at the output axis: the tyre or drive sprocket. And this torque is engine torque multiplied by gear ratio and final drive ratio minus drivetrain loss. This means an engine with less torque can make up the deficit by using shorter gear ratios, but that also means they need more engine rpm to make up for the higher reduction which they tend to do. What's unique about Puma's engine is that it's unusually high revving for a military vehicle, in fact it's higher revving than many passenger cars. The design philosophy is to maximize specific power (kW/L) and power density (kW/kg), so the power pack can be more compact, weighs less, and consumes less fuel (fewer friction/heat loss). Instead the real problem here is not it has less torque than the Armata or any other military vehicle. It's that higher power density designs tend to have more stress and possibly more maintenance. This is the true reason pickup trucks and large SUVs use big 'torquey' V8 engines instead of a small screaming I4; the same applies to military vehicles too. I don't know how reliable Puma's engine is though, since reliability depends on many factors.

Me, a soldier who just wants to know what some guy on youtube has to say about our Puma: *clicks on video* Video: *plays German National Anthem* Me: *suddenly stands at attention saluting*
@Denis This is mainly because the Puma has more technology in it than the Leopard. The ATGM modules for example, and the laser sensors, and keeping compatibility with all of that means you have to keep all the systems in. Of course you could just take away the turret of a tank and reduce its armor, put the engine at the front and make an APC out of it. This is essentially what the M113 is. But the M113 does not have all the features that the Puma has. No real scouting ability, no ATGM, no 30mm gun, no protection system, no composite armor.
The budged of the german military is more than adequate. Look where it stands in the world, relative to soldiers fielded. We could accomplish so much if we downsized bureaucracy and stopped throwing the money out the window, having corruption scandals and having shitty ministers of defense back to back for decades.
@ What you mean is a warmongering budget. There is a distinct difference. All three of these nations cripple their civil progress for excessive military spending. Look at how much money Germoney spends for each active soldier, then compare it to countries within a margin of reason, like France, the UK etc. Lack of funding is not our problem.
Wobbegong its warmongering if you are the top spender. Germany’s position as the shield of europe means it SHOULD invest more for the security of the EU
the firstt time i ever watched red effect, when he said fire control system i thought it meant when the engines caught on fire and it needs to be extinguished. im dumb
7:15 in real combat the units deployed by a puma would carry Anti-tank weapons and adapt their loadout to the situation (offense, defense etc. A.e. in defense the team also has one engineer to erect barricades) keeping them versatile.
So these aren't German soldier it looks like American What I miss in the video is that the puma isn't there to be used against tanks but to support the soldiers against light armour vehicles and personnel the units deployed by the puma have good enough anto tank weapons to destroy tanks
So in other words the Puma is an actual fighting vehicle in use by an armed force rather than a technological demonstrator used for propaganda like T-15 IFV.
2:35 wow! I always wondered how some auto cannons can be "duel feed" and swap between different cartridges on the fly, so it's an open bolt. I've learned something new today 😁
open bolt systems make maintenance and cleaning a lot easier as well, as long as you have a proper safety... that's a big problem for open bolt designs, like many german MGs, as the MG3, you have no real safety, as you can't lock the bolt when it's not opened, but an open bolt is the fire ready position
also generally open bolt systems aren't as precise as closed bolt systems but thats for machineguns rather than auto cannons since these are able to reliably fight threats at 3000 meters

The T-15 isn't the best IFV because it is WAY to heavy and large, plus I'm willing to guess they cost a lot compared to most other IFVs. The T-15 is as big/heavy as some modern MBTs. So now crossing bridges and transporting the T-15 is going to be a a huge issue when compared to other IFVs.
This IFV video series should go on. I would love to see about the BMP-3, the swedish CV-90 and Bradley. Actually, the T-15 beats the Puma with it's ATGM system, where both Commander & gunner can fire two missiles at the same time and slightly with front hull protection. The amount of tourque is rather trivial as long as it fits into the combined arms role. Which is the case with the newer Leopard 2 models, as the MBTs got heavier all along. When the Puma was developed/designed, this was a "must have requirement" for the engineers from the beginning. Edit: I think the video was a little bit too quiet this time, I had to increase volume pretty hard.
The dual fire ATGM's of the T-15 is an awesome system but if the missile can't see the target or gets jammed (due to MUSS) it wont help too much. But I guess it is not much different for the T-15 since it has an APS so both will have trouble hitting each other with ATGM's.
Vehicles like the T14-15 need to be considered technology demonstrators / prototypes and not combat vehicles, because they're not in production and AFAIK not deployed to combat units.
the weazel is also quite nice as you can stuf 2 of em in a helicopter and paradrop them are fast and can even be used in the dessert because of it's relative low weight. also has a lot of optional upgrades as antitank systems and mortars.

Nah, they are Russian made. Most likely overcrowded with problems, even the PUMA still has, and tons more. The Russians are currently not able to surpass any western powers regarding military technology. That should not sound racist in any way, but it is an dictatorship/"communism". Everyone is corrupt and the production highly depends on bribe money and persons in charge. Complicated, highly advanced technology is nothing Russia knows something about or can produce on a greater scale, simply put. That is the main reason they still use realiable but totally outdated T-72s, T-80s (even as BVM) and T-90s. Their MBTs are as heavy as German specialised IFV (the PUMA is much more than "only" an IFV). In Ukraine, you see the full problem of Russian military: Not enough planning and bribe money. Catastrophic planning, basically no logistic making thousands of armored vehicles heavy road blocks and a troop morale that cannot even be strengthened by Russian generals - of which they have lost almost a fifth total. Believe me or not, Russia or more likely Putin, has totally overrated its own military.
This was really comprehensive and informative with tecnical data that make sense. The narrater speak in such a way that one can follow exactly what is meant to say. No warm patato in the mouth accent and the video clip shows exactly what is under discussion. No B.S and rethoric nonsense. Very professional. Thanx so much.
The Puma with it's latest configuration and armor setup is still significantly lighter than the T-15 in it's base setup. It doesn't require that much power. It's also an easier overall build, which is less prone to issues, and weighing cost, efficiency and production, on the long run the Puma is a far more profitable long term investment than the T-15.
The T-15 isn't even a thing, honestly i don't understand how RedEffect could ever believe that it was a serious program. The entire armata program has been clearly dead since at least 2018-2019. I mean they didn't have enough money to upgrade the T-90 to T-90M and stated that it was unnecessary to upgrade the T-90 because the T-72B3M was good enough
Just a little addition concerning the pumas protection. In its combat configuration passive armor at the front, the sides and the turret provides protection against 30mm. In the back there is still armor against 14,5mm. Additionally there is 360° RPG protection (CLARA-ERA at the front and sides and cage armor at the back) and roof protection against artillery bomblets.
I just love the comedically tiny barrel inside of the giant outer barrel cage or whatever you want to call it. Also this thing is the goat in War Thunder, absolutly love it.
Served 4 years in the bundeswehr Panzergrenadierbataillon 112 and let me tell you, the Puma sounds great on paper and all the official info germany releases but its something completely different in reality. Puma came 5 years later than planed, served when we got the first in the bataillon, at the end of my service we had 40 of which only 3 were combatready the production got rushed and they were full of bugs and errors, at some point we had one tank that could drive but not use the turret and an other puma that could use the turret but wasnt able to drive we joked about just changing those parts and having at least one working tank. The designers also made a huge flaw because they had to designt the tank after the criteria that pregnant female soldiers should be able to drive (i shit you not) the tank had oversize which made transportation a very diffucult task beeing overseized the tank route had to be planed very careful and escorted by police or the MPs, its also partly electric which means we had huge portable chargers and had to plug them in, in my opinion a downside overall the tank wasnt very popular and in my 4 years of service i barely saw them in action Funfact: Soldier Hauptgefreiter at 09:40 is from the 4 Kompanie 33. @@komradearti9935 that has more to do with cost and politics rather than the performance of the vehicle. CV-90 is a far more capable system than Puma because of all the different variants BAE offers to fit different nations needs.

Germany tested the CV90 in 2002. It was rejected because of insufficient mine protection, bad weight-protection ratio and low growth potential. They went on developing the Puma afterwards.
@@scheisseaufpasswort I disagree. While the continuously changing and from the start very demanding requirements indeed delayed the program and increased its cost the end result is the safest IFV in service. There were some far worse AFV development processes that ended in nothing.
so last year I saw an autocanon on a truck on the way to a test, didn't recognize it but this is it, it was the PUMA's autocanon, apperently they want to upgrade our APCs to IFVs with this.
Thats not exactly correct. The Vehicle can fight and is still superior in any way... it didnt brake down. Software plague is the problem atm and will be fixed in short terms.
@@codyhearne932 Germany rejected the CV90 after trialing it in 2002 because of insufficent ballistic and mine protection aswell as growth capability. Only after that they started development on the Puma. So much for 'no proof'. The Puma is in a completely different weight class than the CV90, protection levels are not comparable.
One of your only videos that I TOTALLY agree with... Except for the Nammer, and the Brand new Wheel version (of the Nammer called the Eitan). Israel’s own version comes standard with an unmanned 30mm turret and the trophy anti Anti-Tank Missile System built right into the turret from the start. But it’s that 35m monster that I love!!! 5mm doesn’t sound like a lot, but it increases the projectile’s weight from about 300-320 grams to ~550 grams. With a barrel that’s 90 or 95 calibers long!!!! [That’s 3.325 meters]
Does it have a toilet? How loud is it compared to a 40ton truck (acceleration from 0 on asphalt)? How far up can the cannon be pointed? Does it have AC and NBC protection?
@Andrés Valverdeit's fully stabilised so no real recoil. The comfort is quiet nice actually. If you have full combat gear and some extra stuff it can get a little cramped but do to the free hanging seats it feels like a big baby crib. Which also means that you fall a sleep very fast
I have seen an interview with an engineer of IBD Deisenroth who sad that the protection system of the Puma holds 14,5mm rounds all around and with the Modular AMAP-B pack front and sides can hold up to 30mm rounds and more So he implies that there is a class higher protection but wasn't allowed to say more
@@moritz6056 sry mate I don't have the footage(or a link) but is was German so if u could find it pls put a link below But i think it is logical that these ammor cann hold more than 30mm caliber rounds (look at the wight and materials used, and now look at the leopard 2 in size and weight bough vehicles a not to fare apart (Leo has more weight but also a bigger and heavyer gun) so I would estimate that the frontal armor could withstand at least a 50mm or 57mm round)
I have an question, it may be an obvious one but hang on with me :) When a company is developing a new military vehicle does it take into consideration the budget of the military which is buying it or not? If yes; to what extent? And doesn't that reduce the effectiveness of the vehicle which the company is developing, or does it depend on if it's for the country's army or if it's for export, or whether the company is private or owned by the government. If no, then how will the army buy it if it's a top notch vehicle? I think this is a lot to answer in a comment so if you made a video about this it will be amazing. Thank you
Usually a government or military force will put out a specification of what they want, and from companies will either try to make something, or modify an existing platform to fulfill these specs. Multiple companies may compete for the contract and their platforms will be put through "trials" which is basically a big competition to see who has the best. After the first trial selected platforms will go back for alterations and they will usually get submitted for a second trial. This can go on for years. Price may or not be specified in the original specifications or negotiated later.
The first guy to reply was right but there’s an occasional instance where a government gives a company an infinite development budget. Designing the f22’s Radar is one example
@@kieraneusden4353 ok then why don't governments put very high specifications on the things they want, and make companies compete very harshly to achieve it, which intern speed up the the improvements of military tech faster than other countries?

I've learned something new today 😁
So did I!
The Bradley Cannons use an entirely different system but are also dual belt feed
open bolt systems make maintenance and cleaning a lot easier as well, as long as you have a proper safety... that's a big problem for open bolt designs, like many german MGs, as the MG3, you have no real safety, as you can't lock the bolt when it's not opened, but an open bolt is the fire ready position
also generally open bolt systems aren't as precise as closed bolt systems but thats for machineguns rather than auto cannons since these are able to reliably fight threats at 3000 meters

It also doesn't exist so that is a big -
This IFV video series should go on.
I think the Puma wins actually as.....its in service.
The dual fire ATGM's of the T-15 is an awesome system but if the missile can't see the target or gets jammed (due to MUSS) it wont help too much. But I guess it is not much different for the T-15 since it has an APS so both will have trouble hitting each other with ATGM's.

Puma has one absolute no-go problem: Its electronics sux more than hard! It crashes in the middle of operation without any reason, and it takes an hard reset by pulling the main fuses to reset the system, which could easily take more than 10 minutes...
The Problem with T14/15 is that they are so expensive in production, hence why they are only build in small numbers

Puma had a production run... that's why it's better than T15 Armata... all 3 of them...

The designers also made a huge flaw because they had to designt the tank after the criteria that pregnant female soldiers should be able to drive (i shit you not) the tank had oversize which made transportation a very diffucult task beeing overseized the tank route had to be planed very careful and escorted by police or the MPs, its also partly electric which means we had huge portable chargers and had to plug them in, in my opinion a downside overall the tank wasnt very popular and in my 4 years of service i barely saw them in action

When a company is developing a new military vehicle does it take into consideration the budget of the military which is buying it or not?
