Took him to a different doc' out of state, and found out he had strep-throat... as did half the campus.

Almost entirely agreed... I think specifically, specialists exist for the shear volume of complexity in the medical profession. There's just no other good way to deal with it... AND yes, they are under-utilized, in my opinion, too.
Now, should I ever need an epidural (or an ob/gyn for the matter) I think I'll be putting the first call out to the National Inquirer or the nearest reasonable equivalent...
I'll happily share that info (however) with any of the female friendlies who may have need or want for such.
...AND you are entirely correct. Somebody had to be the "bottom half" of their med' class. It's worth contemplation about where they DO end up in their professional world... They gotta be somewhere. ;o)

I work at an adult store. I'm a young woman with a kind face and a gentle demeanor and people just tell me things they wouldn't normally tell other people. Men tell me they're having trouble achieving or maintaining erections all the time. Once upon a time I was studying to be a doctor, so I always reccomend they get their heart checked, especially if it's a new occurrence. I've had at least half a dozen men come back to thank me because they did in fact have heart disease. I also routinely catch the symptoms of STI's and one of my regulars credits me for saving her life because I recognized the symptoms of cervical cancer and insisted she go to the doctor and they caught it in time to save her. Some days I feel like shit for burning out and ending up in a minimum wage job, but some days I feel like I'm right where I'm meant to be. I didn't become a doctor, but I did learn enough to help a few people and that feels really good.

If you have a doctor who is saying that to you get a new doctor.
I had my health problems dismissed for years.... Until I nearly fucking died from one of my dismissed shit when I was 25. After that suddenly everyone is taking me seriously. And holy hell is there a lot of catch up to do, except I'm so sick that I have a hard time keeping up with appointments.
Your doctor should never discourage you from getting something checked out. Just last week I was like "hey I noticed the roof of my mouth is looking discoloured...." At a doctor's appointment, my doc took a look, turns out my viens are just closer to the skin, it's fine, totally normal and healthy. (She explained it a little more in depth and showed me some stuff on her computer about it, including reference pictures that looked just like me, so)
But, noticing I looked a little embarrassed she told me "but I'm glad you still told me about it, because you never know. If you ever have any other questions or concerns always feel free to ask!"
(Honestly I love that doctor, she's only the stand in while my main doc is on mat leave but yea)
Like it's better to check out something harmless than to miss something harmful, ya know?

As someone who has dealt with many medical issues, some of which are chronic from the age of 12, I HATE even the IDEA that youth somehow protects you from illness. It doesn't. Period. If being young was all it took to be healthy, then there wouldn't be a pediatrics wing of hospitals. Kids, teens, and young adults get sick just as much as any adult. If you have a medical concern, pursue it.

Learned this the hard way. If you're hearing voices and/or seeing things that aren't really there, feeling needlessly paranoid about things that don't make sense and/or believe something even in the face of evidence to the contrary, see a psychiatric doctor and be honest about what you're experiencing. They're not going to judge you and the medication, while it can be a pain in the ass due to side effects, it's better than dealing with it without the help and without therapy.
Learned this the hard way. I'm schizophrenic, have been since I was about 15 or 16, I'm 35 today. Didn't come out about the voices, delusions, paranoia and the negative symptoms until I was in my mid 20's. Suffered needlessly all that time.

I always had a high anemia. Recently in hospital after I had a bike accident, they did a blood test and it was worse than ever. It got this bad in just one night. I was also a lot more pale. They started worrying because it was almost for transfusion but then I told them about my period. I usuallyhave it for 6 days and for 3 of them it's very intense. Then they literally let me out, prescription for iron medicine and after over a month of taking it we made a blood test again and it haven't got better. I have a question. I keep getting cysts right in front of both my ears (very close to my nodes) that get big and painful and then drain. They come back consistently. One of my best friends has rheumatoid arthritis, two artificial hips, and an artificial shoulder. Her body was rejecting the shoulder hardware and she had an infection so serious that if she had waited any longer, she would have been dead. The EMT's in the ambulance treated her as if she just called looking for drugs. It was ridiculous. They are so willing to treat people they suspect are addicts "looking for a fix" like they are subhuman. She was near death and they were treating her like trash. They could not conceive of anyone being in pain who wasn't looking for drugs.

    • @nyxx5357

Like, you can't possibly expect to be able to diagnose, let alone treat someone in just fifteen minutes.
