  • Whistleblowers are the backbone of transparency and accountability - democracy can’t function without them, nor good journalism, nor the fight against corruption. And yet, Australian whistleblower protection laws are woefully inadequate.
    Instead of being applauded for speaking out against wrongdoing, everyday people face criminal charges, mountains of legal debt, and often blacklisting in their profession.
    The Cost: Whistleblowers in Australia shows the impacts of whistleblower protection laws on Jacinta O'Leary who exposed human rights abuses on Nauru detention centres operated by the Australian Government, and Sharon Kelsey, who risked everything to bring integrity to Logan City Council.
    Australian whistleblower protections are broken - but real solutions are within reach. Right now, whistleblowers and their experiences need to be front and centre of the political debate to build the momentum needed for things to change. That's why this film was made.
