There is no way of knowing just how old Adam and Eve were when they disobeyed God by eating of the forbidden fruit. I know it couldn't be no one hour later. Plus they couldn't have been only 9 hours old when they were told. In fact God taught Adam then Adam taught Eve. Adam had been naming animals before Eve was created. It no doubt took some time before God created Eve.
Adam knew what death was because God had told him what death is. Along with the animals that died as well. Because animals never had the prospect of living forever, only man would have that opportunity.
God's days are not 24 hour days like ours are. A thousand years is a day to god and a day for a thousand years. That is correct because God allowed Adam and Eve to live to close to one of his days 1,000 years so that man could see if he would be better off determining for himself what is good for him and bad for him.
Even though Adam knew better, still Satan attacked Eve (lesser experienced) like he does with us through our children. Satan was very effective in deceiving Eve into eating of the forbidden fruit.
If God were to bless man's efforts in trying to choose for themselves what is good for them and bad for them it wouldn't prove who's way of ruling is the best for man.
Their job was simple, they had to become many and fill the earth. Along with spreading that paradise garden of Eden to cover the whole world. That is what they would've done had they remained obedient.
God never intended for man to eat of the forbidden fruit. Because if he did then Satan wouldn't have gotten involved at all. Plus adding more punishment for doing what God intended wouldn't be right and God wouldn't do that.
The reply I needed to say that by saying that God intended for man to eat of the forbidden fruit you are blaming God for the evils in the world.
Satan was the one that asked Eve is it so that God said that you are not to eat the fruit of the trees of the garden. She said the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat to satisfaction. But for the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the garden we must not eat of it or touch it because we shall surely die. Satan replied thou shalt not die. In that day your eyes are bound to be open and you are bound to be like God knowing both good and bad. Satan's lie was effective because it reached Eve where it would've reached a lot of us. Our desire to be like God.
If Satan's lie were true man wouldn't need God to tell them what is good for them and what is bad for them. So Satan was challenging God's way of ruling. Saying man would be better off choosing for himself what is good for him and what is bad for him.
Saul of Tarsus of the first century, himself a Rabbi taught at the feet of Gamaliel, had a complete other take on the events in the Garden of Eden. "Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned." (Romans 5:12) That doesn't sound very positive to me.

Any Christian who considers themselves a real follower of God should probably take more from Jewish teachings considering that all of the first books of the bible were kept mostly the same or accurate in Hebrew. Translation to English, Latin, Greek or otherwise results in so much being lost in translation. They say that there are many levels to understanding the bible and even many well known translations feel very off to many who speak the language (which also has not changed much as far as we know).

Except that many Jewish teachings are based on the Talmud, which is teachings of man, not God. You do have to be careful with what you believe to make sure it lines up with the Bible.

I love Rabi Friedman. What a privilege to have seen him in person. I am not even Jewish, but his teachings are so good for my Christian faith. He provides a perspective I don't get from most churches. I enjoy the way he uses humor and logic to convey the message. I have an inquisitive mind and many unanswered questions. Listening to Rabi Friedman is like applying a healing balm to my soul.

I have a question, Rabbi: I truly love your interpretation of the Garden of Eden story. I love the positive interpretation vs. the usual negative interpretation we hear from most circles. As I read the Genesis story with your interpretation in mind, the only word that troubles me - the only word that seems to not fit your interpretation - is when G_d says to Eve, "What did you do?" and Eve says, "The snake tricked me" (some translations say, "beguiled" and others say "deceived"). Is there a way to reconcile your positive interpretation (which I prefer) with Eve's use of the word, "tricked" "beguiled" or "deceived"?
I think a positive interpretation will be the snake explained it to me or he gave me an expo

Love it. I've always thought she was volunteering as a test subject. They couldn't rule as their father wanted without the learning that comes from all the knowledge of evil, that gives context, or meaning, to everything else. I had written a blog about this same subject, called "Why did God let man fall?" In my version, God is the hero, and Eve was just trying to help.

Brilliant. This story puzzled me since I heard it as a little girl. Finally it makes sense!
I have had a few "questions" before with the good Rabbi's teachings, but this time I feel he is demonstrating the theory that if one thinks too much on a subject one tends to get lost. I am not Jewish, and I suppose the "Hasidic" he mentioned regards a theory most haven't heard before; that Adam and Eve were in Heaven and came down to Eden? He then adds a long-winded conversation between Adam and Eve that is purely fictional and is complete supposition. I'm sure no one is interested in my personal interpretation of the story of Adam and Eve. But the question I would ask is - If after several thousand years we still cannot agree to what the first stories of the Torah mean, how can we preach what the will of God is?

What were missing is decency to be obedient. It was a direct commandment from God. Now if you want to interrupt something why not say that Adam knew that death followed eating of the tree but sacrificed his life for eve because he knew that she would die and didn't want to be without her.

I’m sorry, but this is in error. He may look like an intelligent, kind man. Teaching that our Father, sets up his children with a trick. This world is not our home. We are travelling through. Claiming disobeying Father is Good. That is not so. Our own conscience tells.

You've got this totally wrong. God is not taken by surprise so He knew that Adam and Eve would fall and it was essential for them to do so and totally part of His plan.

Beautiful, and I believe there is a deeper mystery to the story and divine mission of Adam and Eve than people are willing to accept, and that Eve is not the Pandora the histories of men have made her out to be. My heart is over joyed.
At one time I was finishing up a long stretch of a commitment to my craft on location with a paint brush in my hand. 13:37recieved the call across the country with fancy hotel reservations, and my travel manifestations were locked in.
Suddenly I was overwhelmed with disappointment at unfinished promises I had made to myself,there God offered me a journey where my needs would be met. I turned down the invitation to LA, and all that went with it, and when it came time I found myself in a cot in a Homeless shelter on the hard side of town, at the bottom where it all falls down
What is now clear is I may never leave here,so heaven must be in the Bronx.

I've read Genesis many times. Where does he get the timeline of the 9th hour and the 10th hour? A very bad idea to add or take away from the scriptures.
@marco conti English. I've heard of the Talmud but am not familiar with it. If Adam and Eve had sinned on the very day God created them, I think He would have been grieved by them, similar to what He said when He chose to cause the Great Flood. Rather, at the end of the 6th day of creation He said it was very good.
The bible is the addition to the scriptures and was manipulated to control us . These teachings and books predate any scripture you may understand.

Moving the Sabbath to Sunday for sun worship? Easter? The grosses holiday of them all with a background in killing babies and drinking blood? Christmas another sun god celebration. To follow christianity you have to break the first for commandments. Sure you did not see the manipulation, because you are not educated in the true history of your faith. Tell me how ritualisticly eating flesh and drinking blood symbolizing cannibalism is kosher? Using the blood of another man to his our sins from god? Crucified wedsday rose on Saturday or the sabbath, that math makes more sense to me. Constantine changed it to Sunday when he mailed it a ton of religion together

The scripture does not say the serpent lost his legs. It merely said he would go on his belly. Many lizards with legs go on their bellies. I have a pet turtle with four legs that goes around on his belly. Do not add to scripture what is not there. This is an example for you to consider how you read scripture. Read carefully. God's Word is important.

If Adam alone was told not to eat from the tree at hour 9, but both of them ate at hour 10, then Chava was created sometime in between. Also, Adam had to have named all the animals between the 9th and 10th hours, since only after the naming did he notice he was alone.

I don't believe this rabbi know the truth. He said God created Adam, that is not true. God created man in their image ( representation, idol) male and female. No breath of life here. Lord God form Adam (man) from the dirt/clay and has the breath of life. If you know the Lord God you know he hates idol. It's written in the law: no idolatry, do not make any carved image from heaven, on earth, or below the earth. The rabbi also didn't get into eve ate the forbidden fruit and got pregnant. So the forbidden fruit isn't really a fruit. From my guess, that's probably Lucifer. Eve/hava had sex with Lucifer and got pregnant. Then hava/eve brought a forbidden fruit to Adam and he had sex, probably lilith. Eve/hava gave birth to cain and able. Put the two together and you get cannibal (cainnable). It's true hava/is the mother of all life, because she has the breath of life. So the man from genesis 1 mix with genesis 2, death mix with life. This is the world and it's system you're in. As for death, when the Lord God said if you eat it you shall die. He didn't mean you die in the flesh. It's your soul that died. Angels in human host body is being transmuted into a different source of energy for the locusts in the bottomless pit.

However, I have a couple questions for you: What role does the serpent play in Adam and Eve's discussion? Why does Eve say that the serpent deceived her? Did the serpent lie to her? Is she bearing false witness against the serpent?

This is from the commentary called Midrash Rabba on Bereishis. I'm not sure where it gets this from, but even the Lubavitcher Rebbe said it must not have been so, but maybe a different Friday. Interestingly Friday is named after the Norse Freycha, the Patroness of...matchmakers!

I'm having trouble understanding exactly what Adam and Eve were sent down to fix, if there were no other people on the earth yet. This is one story in the Bible that I have struggled with more than any other.
Adam and Eve is the discovery story to experience good after evil.
When pain is accepted for what it is, a lesson or a warning, deeply looked into and heeded, the separation between pain and pleasure breaks down.
Both become just experiences, painful when resisted but joyful when accepted.
This something like what a parent might do when they want to let the children figure it out for themselves. Ive never heard this before and it's beautiful. It leaves me with one question though. Just this one..... Who was here in this world to need fixing?

I love this so much. Here is my question: If Adam and Chava chose to go down to this lower world to fulfill their purpose. Why are we demanding that its enough already, that we want Moshiach Now? Doesn't H' know when what we are doing here in this lower world has been completed? Unless in the same way H' wanted us to not eat from the tree when H' really did but wanted it to be our choice, H' wants us to initiate out of this? Is the Rebbe telling us to demand Moshiach Now the Rebbe being tuned in to H's will and letting us know what H' wants from us? Is that still the directive of the moment? or is it to do another act of goodness and kindness? Or both?

Nope. None of that is written into the story. This is not allegory with secret meanings. God speaks plainly. He wants people to understand. This is Adam disobeying God. It's just that simple. _That_ is what's written.

The first question I had in reading the Bible was "What is this lying serpent doing in what is suppose to be paradise?" It is profound. In few words God communicates to human beings that when they arrived in the universe a being already exists who is totally opposed to God. And here is the crucial important part: Humans were create to have authority OVER that enemy of God and not relinquish their mandate to that enemy. But they did.
Another profound theme of the account: God establishes a relationship with humans whom He creates. Man has the ability to damage that relationship but not fix it. If man damages that relationship God has to come in to fix it again. Creation is of God and salvation is also of God.
He told them to eat from the tree of knowledge because if he didnt do that all the people now would never even have been here. adam and eve would have been the only people on earth and immortal. there would be no need for children as people wouldnt age and people wouldnt die. people wouldnt need to eat drink etc. there wouldnt be any families and no way for people to be born on earth. so it was a blessing not a curse that they ate that apple. God never does mistakes and would trick people to eat a apple and punish them.
So God created mankind in his own image,
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.

these verses come before he even made adam.
it means it was preplanned they where meant to eat it so they could multiply. it wasnt a bad thing they ate from it as thats the only way they could multiply and have children. and the reason he told them to eat from that tree first was if they eat from the tree of life first people would never have been born except them 2. then that tree of life was protected because if any of there descendants get to it they could be immortals who cause chaos. once people know whats good and bad and then choose good they can eat from the tree of life. From such a simple thing he did it has people debating over if it’s 1 or 2 trees.
Once they are righteous with God they will be able to solve the tree of life mystery.
The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life.
Those that work out that eating of the fruit of knowledge would then lead a person to be righteous could then see the tree of life. A non righteous person can’t see it. Or if Adam and Eve never ate from the tree of knowledge they can’t see the tree of life because they’re not righteous. U can’t have 1 without the other in this perfect plan of God. god created humans in his image by breathing life into them. Without that fruit they ate humans would never have had the knowledge of how to make other humans in their image and even know what life is. They would just have been 2 immortals not knowing what it is. From this plan of God there would come the wisdom of the righteous to see the tree of life.
That’s why Gods not all angry and furious after they ate the fruit because he is wisdom and had a plan. He knows from that people will be debating and trying to work things out for thousands of years and knew they’d all be saying the snakes bad and to listen to him. And many trying to work out why it happened like that. those who claimed they had knowledge would claim people where meant to live forever like Adam and Eve without realising they wouldn’t even be their to think that if that was so, religions would debate and fight over it. he knew most would see it as a bad thing and focus on that while not seeing that he is all powerful all knowing and all good. Clouded with their own knowledge they cannot seeing that it’s his plan for u all to experience life instead of just 1 or 2 people.
Millions of people for generations would be debating over if it was god the snake Adam or Eve to blame over what was a simple and easy to understand thing. God can create anything he wants. He made man in his image. He then gave humans the ability to create more humans in that image. Only by eating that tree could man have multiplied. When he said be fruitful and multiply it was because he was giving all u humans a obvious clue that if u eat the fruit u would multiply. If u didn’t eat the fruit none of u humans would even be here. It would have just been Adam if he chose. Or Adam and Eve. But he gave all u humans that gift to have children and families and experience this universe just how he envisions. So humans of earth no need to debate who was wrong in that situation. God is wisdom and has everything all happening for good reasons.
It most certainly wasn’t a mistake they made or a curse. Humans shouldn’t use human judgement to try and link God up to any curse he does during creation in anyway way. When God made Adam and Eve he blessed them.

I love this interpretation, and I've listend to all the videos by the Rabbi on this topic. How does G-d "cursing" the snake, Adam and Eve fit into this intrerpretation? This is the only element that I haven't been able to fully integrate or explain, other than "cursing" being a simpe statement of fact, and not as a punishment. But I don't know enought Hebrew to be sure whether this is how the word can be used. Can anyone point me in the right direction or share their thoughts?

I would like to know what other texts he uses to interpret the story this way. I love the interpretation because I never felt that God was mad at man. He brings up some very good point that Adam did not have time to learn to rebel etc. At first I was skeptical and I still want to go back and reread the account but likely he is using other texts to support this.
There are two accounts of creation. Genesis chptr 1 through to Genesis 2: 4a is the first. Genesis 1:26, 27 reads "Then God said, “Let US make HUMAN BEINGS in OUR IMAGE, to be like US. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground.” 27 So God created human beings in his own image In the image of God he created them; MALE and FEMALE he created them." (Should read in "their image they created them...)
So as you can see, there are two Gods involved in this first creation, a male and female God entity who made humans in their image.
In Genesis 2:4b onwards, Jehovah or LORD is mentioned for the first time. He was the God who broke away from his female entity or counterpart desiring all glory worship and honour for himself. He became the rebel God or Satan. He created Adam and Eve and planted the tree of knowledge of good and bad in the garden of Eden. Unlike the true God female, who can create from nothing, Jehovah/LORD or Satan needed dust to create from as this had DNA already in it from the previous humans that had lived and died from the first creation. Then ge created Eve from Adam's rib.
Also Jehovah/LORD Satan loves animal blood sacrifices. He accepted Abels firstborn lambs but rejected Cains finest produce. Why would a God of love desire animal blood sacrifices that is a pleasing aroma to him. Exodus 29: 17, 18 "Cut the ram into pieces, and wash off the internal organs and the legs. Set them alongside the head and the other pieces of the body, 18 then burn the entire animal on the altar. This is a burnt offering to the LORD; it is a PLEASING AROMA, a special gift presented to the LORD."

this was "MIND BLOWING" and an incredible way to view the story. I have 1 question - even though there are "different conditions" outside the garden, why blame the snake at all. What was the point if Hashem wanted Adam/Chava to eat from the tree, to blame the snake. Essentially, why give the snake a bad name?
