Coming back to that 2016 video almost a decade later is _rough_ , buddy. Listening to Roberts talk about one of his then competitors then seeing how every major contemporary (ie Elite Dangerous, No Man's Sky, and X4) from the start of the Space Game Renaissance has excelled while CIG putters along is something. It's even worse in the case of No Man's Sky, a game that failed, built itself back up, and succeeded, while CIG is still working out how to get the training wheels off.

    • @RN1441
      @RN1441 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +6

He talks a good game, but the reality is that CIG has never learned to plan how anything is going to work or fit together and has as a result has blown vast quantities of money to accomplish very little. I think their last chance to fix it was 3 years later in 2019 when they used a year to make a roadmap that then failed spectacularly. They needed to ask themselves hard questions about why they couldn't plan even a couple months out after 'building tools and a foundation' for 7+ years, but instead they took the easy way out and blamed the people who noticed how badly they were failing as 'roadmap watchers'. It's not the fault of the people who have given them a billion dollars and near 13 years that they can't deliver what they promised us would take a maximum of 65 million and be ready far sooner at a far higher quality level.

Forget base building, elite is adding Solar system architects with colonization of the replica milky way and its 400 billion solar systems in a few weeks... XD
I`d bet Elite add`s ship interiors before SC gets crafting. Elite has such an amazing foundation to work with. Sc is Eye candy where the bugs from the eye candy kill you. lol Refactor Chris Refactor Refactor Refactor then maby one day...

No black holes in the 5 planned systems for 1.0, no blue supergiants, no lava planets like Pyro was supposed to have...sure the things that SC does have are prettier but the whole "mile wide and inch deep" argument often launched against Elite starts to fall apart when your own game is like 200 feet wide and only 2 inches deep to compensate.

@@austinm5630 So true. Elite has plenty of extremely pretty moments that pop up when exploring throught the verse... The systems with multiple suns and pulsars.. I love it.. Its got a galaxy thats only been .06% explored by players... After all these years thats freeking phenominal. The alien race is super uniqe, pretty and the sounds are out of this world!
I took a break from elite to dive into star citizen partially based on star citizen sites being "hand made". That ended up being bullshit, most places feel the same. How long to get a real explorable universe in SC, 10-20 years? Chris R had no idea what he was doing game wise, still doesnt I think. Hell of a marketer tho. He litterally had to buy code from a different game engine to start and there obiously confused on how to fix 5 year old bugs. lol
Im glad I checked out SC for a bit tho, coming back to elite dangerous, I honestly appreciate it 100x more now. Quality is so important.
Looks like Elite is adapting to Sc`s marketing model, just not as scummy, good for them..

Y'all should be scared. In a three-hour interview, Benoit couldn't pinpoint the difference between and game dev Engineer and a game dev programmer and proceeded to say they could be interchangeable to him. He then went on to repeatedly say they didn't have enough expertise to assign different projects at once. A billion dollars, a lack of experts, and only now a focus on fixing bugs. But they neither have the brain-power, nor the institutional knowledge to understand the systems creating and hiding the bugs.
    Wowzers.
They admitted to only looking toward making features to attract new wallets. Wild.

CIG presents themselves as making a game that requires simultaneously solving extremely different problems over several interconnected but different domains of specialization, then proceeds to hire a gaggle of low priced inexperienced developers to do it. Solving hard let alone hard and interconnected problems requires experienced specialists but CIG is mostly throwing code at the wall. You can also tell their leadership structure is profoundly broken as their ship throughput hasn't budged at all even while they've hired several hundred more people and even as their 'tools' and 'pipelines' were finished. All that effort and a couple guys bouncing derailed the banu merchantman, twice.

    • @oldirty8992
      @oldirty8992 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

I think you’re missing the point. The distinction between a Software Engineer and a Programmer can be subtle, and in many cases, the roles overlap, which is why Benoit might have found them interchangeable. He wasn’t confused, he was emphasizing how these roles blend in practice. In a complex system, it’s less about job titles and more about expertise in specific areas. From his perspective as a system architect, it makes sense to see them as interchangeable.
As for the lack of expertise, that’s a fair concern, but it's not unusual in large-scale projects. Game development at this level isn't just about fixing bugs. It is about managing evolving systems, many of which were likely built with trade-offs that make debugging difficult. That is not a lack of brain power. It is the reality of working with massive, interconnected systems.
As a programmer myself, I know that sometimes there’s no distinction at all. If you see a difference Benoit missed, could you pinpoint it for me?

Chris reminds me of Steve Jobs - he has an idea in his head of what he wants the thing to look like but he can't put it into words, so his employees keep throwing new designs of the same phone at the wall over and over praying one will finally satisfy their god but all that changes in the price keeps going up for customers just to get a barely-improved version of last year's functionless paper weight.
Then Jobs died and now they spent a decade just barely figuring out how to make the brick look pretty again, because Jobs didn't write his plan in his head down.
Chris is not a young man. I hope he lives a long life but if something happens tomorrow, I am not even sure if that would be good or bad for the game. Is he the one keeping the ship afloat or the one constantly running it aground? I think maybe both now.

A code base that has clearly defined modules they can modify without affecting every other piece of code they've written? Nope, it is just a mess of code that was not planned out and put together with proper version control. Every change they make seems to bring back old bugs they supposedly took care of years ago...

Often the best scammers are the ones who do not even think of themselves as scammers. People who rationally know what Ponzi schemes are will sometimes still go into Ponzi schemes convinced they will work so long as nobody stops believing.
The problems start when people do stop believing.
We are at that point now.

But also in the sam ereport, the Animation department was working on animals 'charging'; and their next task is the Sandworm! They probably wont animate Hacking until the end of the year, and without placeholders, so fitting it into the code will require more refactoring.

CIG relies on this "You don't understand how hard game development is at this scale" drumbeat argument to justify never being done and it's absolute nonsense. Plenty of us have been working in tech for years and are not mystified about the scale of the effort and can remain critical. At this point CIG needs to start acting like they themselves understand how hard game development is and develop absolutely any one of the many different games they've pretended SC is going to be over the years. Star Citizen is not in any way a groundbreaking game because it never actually finishes anything enough to break the ground. Many of the unfinished chunks of game would have been groundbreaking if they had come out anytime near when CIG almost did them. At this point then we'll be too busy actually flying spaceships to be interested in how Chris got the physics wrong when he was over simulating details but making the flying cartoony.

Star Citizen is rapidly becoming a lost cause. There is so much work to do just to fix up the base game and build the backlog of ships, while gold-passing the ones we have, on top of the money drying up. Great videa. Funny, I was also reading that forum post yesterday. Some very good points.
I don't think the old CryEngine is actually a problem. This engine was developed before ray tracing and AI fake frames or blurry AI upscalers were a thing. The fact that CIG has to do classical asset optimization (like LODs and displacement / bump maps) may be benefitial for perrformance in the long run. The number of games i have played recently that were barely hitting 60fps at native 1080p despite not looking better than games from 8 years ago is abysmal. Unreals Nanite and Lumen are a big part of the problem. Impressive systems developed for the dynamic destructible worlds of Fortnite. But for mostly static worlds, they are a really bad choice performance wise. Many games could run way faster on recent hardware, if more game developers would actually optimize the engine to the needs of their game. With the old engine, CIG is gonna have to do just that.

Server meshing and persistence is what I tend to blame for the state of the game. I never needed it to play an enjoyable space game. How complete and stable might the game be if he never went down this path. Does wow's millions of players for decades and decades need persistent environments? Does it need one large virtual server? No. No other MMO that's successful tried to do this. Often it's been said they don't want to "break the immersion" with a load screen. Haha . Not having my character fall through a planet having the elevators work having my ship spawn incorrectly or despawn correctly not having my body teleport places on ending up in the sun so many examples of things that break the immersion.

The fact is ED has a flight model, a wwwwaaayyyy better map system that can get you anything you need in a few button presses. I also will take the MFD system over any implementation of multicrew from SC.
Being able to handle everything as one player is just better for game playability...
ED and SC arent 1 to 1 comparisons.
ED is a "Star Trek" sim.
SC is a "aStar Wars" fantasy game.
The problem is they tried to sell it as "the best damn space sim ever"....
Turns out after you look at everything its not a sim at all, but a space fantasy game that doesnt even have a flight model.....
SC if it comes out, is not going to be a good game, its going to be a social space fantasy game...

The game already had its release many years ago. They are selling the entrance for full price, sell skins and weapon/ armor packs.
And obviously they sell big ships for maximum money.
This game has to be considered as "released". It is playable. And via the "life service" argument, will receive updates and getting more content and mechanics along the way.
The definition of "alpha" is just an escape plan of denial by this point.
If it would be an alpha, it is a pre-alpha: almost no concept has been finished and locked down, they have still no idea about many mechanics at all and purely neglect basic ideas, like what happens with the loss of paid-with-real-money items? Or rare ones, like event -rewards?
No word from the company at all.
Kinda sad, that there is so much deceiving of the public by this company today.
