Dad Lando was an outstandingly kind fellow nerd, I am grateful I got to talk with him a number of times, he was so involved within the Star Citizen community and when i talked with him he was always excited about Star Citizen and willing to drive all over for Bar Citizens. And we had some wild shenanigans about cosplay helmets and made some discords servers together with the community. God bless the King Fish, baron Lando 🍻 you will be missed my good sir and citizen of the stars 🫡 see you in the great beyond

Here's some strange irony. I had watched half of this episode and then needed to get dinner and take the dog for a walk. During that walk, my brother called me to let me know that my dad passed away. I've been expecting it some day soon but tonight was the night. I came back, sat down, and tried to distract myself by watching the rest of the episode. Jared, I feel your loss. Truly. And I'm grateful that you shared your story at the end. This is a game we all feel passionately about but we're all human beings with all the trials and tribulations of life being thrown at us. May your father and mine rest in peace.

My father also passed away in November at the age of 77 and playing Star Citizen with him was the most enjoyable thing I did in the verse. Between losing him and the state of the game I had lost all hope in the project. As a Wing Commander (with every ship still in my Hangar) and an Imperator subscriber for a number of years, it says a lot about the current state of the game that I was about to walk away.
This ISC is exactly what I needed to watch. I finally feel heard. The glimmer of hope has returned.

Thank you Jared, thank you Benoît.
I'm French, I'm 61 years old, I've been a backer for a few years and I spend my several hours a day on SC (sometimes, I even play 😊). I've just finished watching this interview and I have to say that this humility touched me because I consider myself to be one of the enthusiasts and that at times it's difficult to maintain this passion because we have so many problems to deal with. Although it's clear that not everything will be solved with a wave of a magic wand, the message delivered is reassuring and leads me to believe that the game will really become one from this year onwards (coming out of alpha). Thank you Jared for sharing this moment of your intimacy, which reminds me a little of my own situation. For me, this game is a window of freedom that also makes me forget my health worries when the stars are aligned.
For all this, thank you to all the SC teams who work to give us happiness.

It is an incredibly wise and forward-thinking decision to focus on making Star Citizen playable rather than constantly adding new features. After all, what good are the most impressive additions if players can’t truly enjoy them?
Star Citizen is by far the most impressive and unique game of its kind. Its depth and level of detail are unmatched - and when it comes to the graphics, there’s really no need to even mention them: they are simply breathtaking.
That’s why I’m truly grateful that you’re now prioritizing bug fixing. The community will thank you for it - because when players no longer have to struggle with constant issues, they can finally experience the game as it was meant to be. And this won’t just make existing players happier, but also attract many new players.
The current state of patch 4.0.1 is simply not playable, so this decision is absolutely the right one. Congratulations on taking this step! It will propel Star Citizen forward in a meaningful way.

I am a senior mobile dev, not for games but other stuff. I have backed SC on kickstarter more than a decade ago. I have opened the game a couple of times over the years, and got frustrated each time because of gamebreaking bugs and crashes. I can only estimate the level of complexity the game systems of SC have, and the devs that made them real have my full and honest respect, even with these bugs. But for the game to be interesting it needs to be stable. Seeing this shift to work a full year on fixes after the realization of incredible tech like persistence and server meshing is actually the first time I am excited to start the game again, maybe in 6 months from now. People don't understand how "developement" works. This talk is incredibly valuable and gives a real and honest insight into that. I understand the scepticism, I have it too, but the problems CIG is trying to solve are no simple feat that just takes X amount of time. Its the same reason why its impossible to predict when a new innovation will be made. So I understand that this endevour may take an insane amount of time, but to get the company working the game still has to be playable and fun during all of this time. I really hope this shift to fixing bugs will bring exactly that.

I've been supporting them switching to this best practice approach for years now after being a part of other space sim communities.
Think Elite: Dangerous, X:Rebirth (and X3 generation of games), think even mech warrior online if you will.
Currently, this talk is the best we could have ever got, let see if they walk the walk this time.

    • @explorer47422
      @explorer47422 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

I don't think they ever really anticipated the PU to be what it is currently, the plan was simply to have an eternal pre-alpha test environment for early backers to experience some of the game features as a reward for backing it, but it's progressed into a fully fledged game with some people having the same level of expectations from it as a fully released game, and I think it took a long while for CIG management to really appreciate that. The excuse of 'well it IS only an Alpha' is still valid, but it's taken on a level of expectation that demands a certain level of quality from the amount of money people have invested into it. It many ways it became a victim of its own popularity, with many more 'casual' gamers getting in on the action and expecting so much more out of it than what was initially envisioned. Hopefully these plans go some way to address it.

Backers are right to be angry but they blame the wrong things. The problem is not really the "slow" progress or the monetization, but rather the ginormous scope of SC (not to mention - SQ42!), and the sheer amount of the scope that falls in "uncharted" territory.
(oh, and that graphics was prioritized over gameplay prototyping so that there's now a huge legacy tech debt)

  • @RiccardoPearlman

Ooof. I have been out of the loop with SC for a year or so and did NOT expect to see this. For the past couple months I had been overseas re-establishing my citizenship in the country where I was born. I ended up having to rush back home just as my process was concluding because my dad was in the hospital. I got home, spent the next day with him in the hospital where we high fived it over the new dual citizenship and we discussed our plans for this year. He passed unexpectedly that night. I am also now going through his place and dealing with all the belongings and doing that thing you have to do when you lose your last parent.
Jared, my heart goes out to you, truly. I know I am incredibly thankful, and extremely fortunate to be surrounded by a wonderful circle of friends who have made all the difference these last two weeks. I think its such a rare gift that you have those who love and support you IRL, and then this wonderful community. But then to see that your dad was almost a bridge to both of these worlds? Amazing :)
This part of life is something we all dread- if we're being real- for the majority of our adult lives, and then it comes. What a gift to be in a place in your life to receive it in this manner. I wish you all the peace that you can have while you cross into this next chapter in your life.

My GF's grandfather, who was 88 when I met him, gave his great grand daughters game consoles so they could practice to play with him for when we went over to see him. I miss him. He was a hoot! Somehow, fate saw fit to take him from us less than a month before hitting 100.

    Sorry for your loss Jarred.
Sometimes I feel like I am in the same boat as your dad. I am a retired Army guy as well, 100% VA disabled and some underlying medical issues. I dedicated myself to playing Star Citizen after retirement. Spend more than I told myself I was allowed to spend on this project and fear that one day I too will pass away before this project is even a fraction of what was promised to us when the crowd funding started. I been following this project for over a decade. 5 Digit dollars later and I, like your dad (RIP), am still waiting.
God Bless and thanx for sharing an important personal part of your life there at the end. Thanx for being a devil's advocate on our behalf and ask questions with a taste of cynicism that some of the players are starting to feel.
Cheers and here is to many more productive years of Star Citizen...

    Amazing insight here.
Can't think of any other game studio being this open and transparent.
New features or content are worthless if you can't use them.
So sorry for your loss Jared, made me tear up.
Still don't understand why instant hangars were done this way.
An 'instance' is technically away from the public server or away from everyone else, hench the name 'an instance'.
Some games puts you in the sky (since we use that we can't do that here) or, inside the planet somewhere, invisible to everyone else.
Other games load it into a local instance, which opens the door for cheating but once loading back into the public, the server checks and validates the changes that were made "off-line".
I can't for the life of me understand why it was done this way, with stacking. So different and SO much more complex from any other game.
This method is like eating soup with a fork.
And that's coming from an internal alpha tester for all the big boys (EA, Ubi, Bioware, ect), for the past 2 decades.

Losing a parent is unbelievably tough... you get through it, learn to live with it. But you never truly get over it. That may seem like a downer, but it's really is a good thing because it means they had such a positive and lasting impact in your life that it hurts when they are gone.
Transparency like this is why I enjoy watching this project so much. Let's knock out those bugs!

This discussion was top-notch. A pleasure to listen. Here's to 2025 being the year of stability in the 'Verse. It's still my contention that if they can get the performance and stability solid with just what they offer now in Star Citizen, that there will be no other out there that can offer the fidelity and emergent gameplay that SC does. Nothing else will even come close.

  • @tubulardose
    @tubulardose 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

I really needed to see this interview. I have no experience in the industry, none with coding or computer engineering either, but im young enough to not be completely naive to the complexity of these things. After playing for a while i was getting burnt out and discouraged by the bugs in the game, but watching this has helped me to better understand the cause of the bugs, the process of how they are fixed and the hope for the future, as well as how my participation and reporting can actually help. As making issue report after issue report to the council was starting to feel like using a spoon to bail out a sinking ship. I love this game, I love when it works, I love that it challenges itself and tries to deliver absurd features that other game studios wouldnt even attempt. I believe CIG can get it done, I believe the verse will be stable in due time, I believe that it will be a highly successful and enjoyable game. I cant wait to jump back in now and go hunt down some bugs.
to quote Johnny Rico: "Someone asked me once if I knew the difference between a civilian and a citizen. I know now. A citizen has the courage to make the safety of the human race their personal responsibility. Dizzy was my friend. She was a soldier. But most important, she was a citizen of the Federation."

Every time I hear how you guys treat employees, actually caring and treating them like living people, caring about their feelings, trying to avoid things like burnout or trying to keep them engaged, I'm amazed. I've never experienced that at a job before. Heck, I've never _heard_ of another employer actually doing that, they only say they do because they're supposed to say that.
The experience I've had, by myself and witnessing it happen to others, at every job I've held (and it's a lot, my flavor of neurospiciness means I tend to not last that long at any one employer) is use them until you break them, then discard and replace them.
