Hi Mike! My Father used to build and fix computers for people in the 1980s and 90s (in the United States) and we went to computer stores with him to buy parts for his projects. These were the days before Best Buy, I think Comp. Usa and Circuit City were the chains, but we also ended up in many Smaller Computer Stores that just had shelves of motherboards and ram and random stuff. So... I ended up playing SOOOOO many different games on Dos, Mac, Apple II, and whatever other random OS that he was working on at the time. We wanted a NES, but we already had computers, so we had to buy the VGA version of Double Dragon and stuff like that. I never liked it as much as the NES, when we eventually got one, but as I get Older, I like to reminisce and think about those old games, and the variety they came in, and how lucky I was to watch someone work on those old machines. But, I have experienced a life that kids who are born now have to deal with, with their parents Mesmerized by their device and Neglects Everyone and Everything else around them. My Father was Chained to a Computer Chair for the time he was on his computer. But now, someone on a device is like someone chained to a MOBILE Computer Desk that goes with them everywhere, at least the Current Day people are getting more exercize than they used to on a Computing Device(Cell Phone). Thank You for Loving Video Games and Sharing your Passion With US, YOU RULE!

"I was not able to figure out how to get the damn controller to work."
Sounds like a genuine Sinclair ZX Spectrum experience. As there was no proprietary joystick interface for the Spectrum, many companies made their own, and it made selecting which joystick you had a bit of a mystery sometimes. :)

Thanks for adding the chapters, most of the games look interesting and I'm gonna check them out. I started playing games on the Apple II, so I get the charm of this era very well. The Doom one reminds me of a game I made in the 90's on our Mac, before Doom was ported over. It was called Doomed and I made it in Hypercard. It was a really simple programming tool that could add buttons on cards that go to other cards, play short animations or sounds, etc, and so it was really just a point and click game but like you'd click on an imp's poorly drawn head and it'd play a gun sound and look like it exploded, and you could go down branching pathways kind of like a choose your own adventure book. This is quite a step up from that and it's really cool.

    • @holdingpattern245
      @holdingpattern245 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Fun fact, Hypercard was almost the world's first web browser, the only difference is that Hypercard can access only one web server (and this was intentional, to keep their customers from sharing stuff they didn't like), the first actual web browsers were even based partially on Hypercard.

Amazing, I get two long-time wishes coming true in the same week: a new Monkey Island game and Mike playing Cookie! Just a bit of trivia, that title is in an honored tradition by the Ultimate Play the Game to mistype words in their games (along with Atic Atac you mentioned, Sabre Wulf, Underwurlde and other classics). I think the title actually refers to the cook, because the inlay talks about a bowl of ingredients for a cake. And that green broccoli-like thing is actually a fishbone. I guess it's mouldy. The Ultimate games are all originals and they were actually made to have an arcade feel on a speccy.

Great to see you playing the ZX, the 48k Speccy was my first computer, I think, that and 2600 console I had around the same time.
Magnificent Seven was a classic twin tape pack compilation, Project Future, Chuckie Egg, Jack The Nipper 2, 180, Agent X, Atic Atac, Wizball, Xenon....
These are games I still play on my MiSTer or 128k fairly often.
Can't beat them Spectrum colours eh, unmistakable 👍
Edit: definitely recommend Project Future for a fun game, quite tricky I'd say, and shows Speccy colours nicely, vibrant

The ZX Spectrum was the top selling home computer in the 1980s in the United Kingdom. It has a very varied and vast back catalogue of games software most of it on compact cassette tapes. It had decent version of arcade titles like Space Harrier and Enduro Racer, Paperboy. Knight Lore, Atic Atac, Jet Pac ( All three games by Ultimate Play The Game). I owned a Sinclair ZX Spectrum+ myself. A nice video thanks for putting this out.

Mario on the Speccy is pretty impressive considering the Spectrum has no hardware scrolling, no hardware sprites, and 8 colors of which 7 have a bright option for 15 colors total. As for Manic Minor, the Speccy 16K and 48K do not have a sound chip, so to produce music it has to constantly interrupt the CPU, so it is pretty amazing it has any music at all, let alone music and sound effects at the same time.

Omg!, As a kid in the UK England I went through 3 spectrums before I got my Amstrad CPC 464 which blew my mind compared to the spectrum lol. I think my most defining gaming moment though was when I got the sega megadrive/genesis and I watched Altered Beast boot up!... My mind was blown at the graphics, playing the game it looked incredible, I couldn't believe how real it looked lol. Revenge of Shinobi, castle of illusion, sonic 1, Mercs, shadow dancer, golden axe, Hellfire, just a few games that blew the rest of what was left of my child mind. Then I got the SNES and I just died when I saw super mario world, Fzero and could play final fight at home instead of watching all the bigger kids hog the arcade machine during school lunch break lol.
Also Gryzor, I had that on my Amstrad, never knew it was Contra until years later. I think Contra was on Nes and I never owned a Nes so my introduction to that series was Gryzor I guess. I moved it though. First Contra game for me was Super Contra, that's when I went "hang on... this is like that old Gryzor game I had" :).

The Spectrum originally released in 1982 with 16k and 48k variants. These had a rubber keyboard, a beeper for sound and no joystick ports, you had to buy an adapter hence the "Kempston", "Sinclair" etc options, they were the popular joystick interfaces and were compatible with "Atari" style joysticks.
The 128k model released in 1985, affectionately called the Toast Rack due to the large metal heat-sink on the right side. This model had a proper soundchip (an AY-3-8912) and a better, plastic keyboard.
The 128 was short lived as Sinclair was taken over by Amstrad in 1986 who revised the machine to look more like their own CPC range. The Spectrum +2 had similar specs to the earlier 128 but featured a built-in tape drive and joystick ports and a updated rom.
A revised +2A model and a +3 were released in 1987, the +2 fixed some bugs and incompatibilities found in the +2. The +3 had a 3" floppy drive instead of the tape drive.
    Production ended in 1992.

About the "disk swapping problem" on c64 games:
CSDB (Commodore Scene DataBase) is a webside with scene-releases.
You can find cartridge-files of some games (called easyflash-release) and also some d81 versions (a disk with more space) so multiple d64-diskimages can fit into a single file without the need of swapping disks... As long as someone took the time to make one.
A good example is the easyflash-release of zak mckracken & maniac mansion by onslaught. Two great games in one file and no "disk swapping problem"! Those files also load faster. You should also try out "project firestart" (easyflash-release by nostalgia)! It predates "sweet home" on the nes by some month so its more or less the first survival horror game ;)

One time during a Halo lan party back in the day a friend of mine set his Sanyo tube on its side for a few minutes while we were hooking stuff up. After he set it back up right, one side of the screen was all purple and green, and it took almost a half hour for that to fade and go back to normal. So my advice would be to never set a tube on its side unless it was designed to be a vertical monitor.

    Apparently the Speccy can only display the 8 colours;
Black, Blue, Red, Magenta, Green, Cyan, Yellow, White.
With 2 different intensities of each one.
So limitation is probably a fair part of it
But on games like Ghouls n Ghosts, why Arthur is yellow, as is the bricks, as is the fire... Don't know why at least Arthur isn't coloured different to stand out?
I'd think must be some limit otherwise it's a strange design choice I agree

Ramon F. Adams’s Western Words lists “cookie” as one of the names for a range cook. Probably you're acting as the cookie in this game.

Atic Atac is included the Rare Replay compilation that released a few years back. It's available on Xbox and PS4 anyway, not sure about Switch. It's a strange maze/item hunt game. It's all right, pretty outdated though in its design imo.

That game baffles me, Sabre Wulf looks more like something I would enjoy.

It's definitely bizarre. It's all about memorizing the maze, which is a huge pain to do, but with enough repetition, you do eventually get the hang of it.

If you want to know more about the Spectrum, Kim Justice has a lot of videos about its games.
Mario Bros. with the Dr. Snuggles theme? lol

I find that the Commodore 64 hardware is really good but the game library is surprisingly bad, and that the Spectrum hardware is really bad but the game library is surprisingly good. One of my favorite Spectrum games is Xeno. Of course the Spectrum is a computer, so it doesn't really specialize in "pick up and play" type games, but the library has a lot of variety with something for everybody. And of course, both Commodore and Spectrum have many good homebrew games.

Apparently the keyboard had a bad feel to it, some users said it was like trying to type on a corpse's face.

@@holdingpattern245 As someone who owns the original rubber keyboard, I quite like it. But there are other models that use more traditional keyboards.

The ZX spectrum colours and controls were restricted by hardware. Keyboards were legit controls back in the day I guess.
My first home computer was the Commodore Vic 20! That was pre C64!
Did you guys have the Atari 800XL States side? This was the home computer I had next and was probably most comparable to the C64.

Another point...the NES games were programmed by the Japanese powerhouse studios, whereas the home computer versions were always licensed out. Many publishers were after a 'quick buck' so the translations were mostly poor.
Imagine that all games back in the day were 'home brew' on home computers, and the talented programmers were snapped up by publishers. The cream eventually rose to the top.
Look at the history of Rare for example (look at the games on 'Rare relplay' for example). They were bedroom programmers and their main studio is just up the road from me now. Huge studio in Twycross UK.

The Ninja Gaiden game is a port of Ninja Gaiden Shadow on Game Boy. Good game, but nowhere near as difficult as the NES games.
