  • Playing DOOM for Super Nintendo and then a few Mario NES hacks afterwards. I went through the Knee Deep in the Dead campaign. The music is great on this port. The graphics... you can barely see the enemies. Mario hacks I played: Nerarious Dreams, Super Mario Skycastle

I agree, I saw a video of the guy that ported this game, he explains how he did it. There were so many challenges he had to overcome because of the limitations of the snes, a lot of them were explained in the video. The fact the he got it to run even this good is just amazing
Edit: Actually if I remember the interview, this isn't really a port I think since the source code wasn't available yet. He remade the game by reverse engineering it, which makes it a lot more impressive

@@Skilful_basics8 It was just a lot harder to port Doom back then, especially on a console with half the bits to work with. Surely someone would have done it eventually, but it was impressive how quickly Randy Linden was able to port this thing to SNES while Doom was still in its heyday.

When this game came out, I had a 386sx-16 PC, so even after a 4MB upgrade, the game barely ran. For SNES owners without a 486 or higher, it was amazing to be playing this on the console. SNES Doom might have it’s downsides, but there are some huge positives to this port if you didn’t have a PC or a PlayStation at the time; it’s the only console port that doesn’t butcher the level architecture or textures, the only port that includes all 3 episodes with all the secret levels intact, the only port with all weapons and enemies present including the Cyberdemon and Spider Mastermind. Plus the music is god tier. Thank you for blacking out the commenters name. (who totally isn't me) ^_<
I was surprised that you did it on ultraviolence, considering that there's so many instances where the game doesn't allow you to mitigate damage. Either because the framerate is so poor, or from the sticky walls. The biggest issue though is that damned input delay. I watched this the other day on your twitch uploads, and I fired up the game as well. I'm quite familiar with Doom, but I haven't played this port since I was a kid. And this was my first actual introduction to Doom.
I certainly remembered the muddy, aliased graphics, and the optimistic 8 frames per second, but the input latency was something I didn't quite remember. It practically takes eons to see the result of a shot or a strafing step.
I salute you for making it through, because once the novelty of Doom on Super wears off, I too would have quit, and hooved the cartridge into the nearest landfill.

you have to understand the SNES was a 2d machine. It's 3d capacity was extremely limited, even with the FX chip. Starfox looks like total crap now, just a few polygons and linear map, and a low resolution backdrop. Doom was way more complex. also the SNES version had more maps and enemies than most other version of that time

I couldn't help but notice that on your GBA variety streams. I'd go as far as to say that most of the games have minutes of pointless text before they ever allow you to just play the goddam game. And on a portable system no less. It's supposed to be for quick gaming while you're on the go. But then you're stuck there, button mashing through poorly written story and dialog. I would bet that if there's a GBA solitaire game, it would have tons of fuckin text before you can start moving cards around. On SOLITAIRE!!!!

Love your channel so much Mike. I watch religiously.
Just FYI, i noticed there's a high frequency noise on all your videos. Its around 10- 12 khz. You could improve this easily in post production with an EQ or noise removal software like RX by Izotope. I'm curious if the sound is IN the room where you film. Maybe coming from some old electronics. It could also be due to old electronics or lighting stuff being on the same circuit as your production gear (camera, mics, etc). The former case could be improved with mixing. The latter case you could potentially eliminate it.
If I can help you with this please let me know. I'm an Audio Engineer and it would be the least I could do! Thanks for YEARS of joy and nostalgia!

My audio is how I want it. I am able to do direct capture audio. (I have been doing that on my Returnal PS5 streams for example) The music in those games is more orchestral so I lean towards direct capture for those types of games. For Retro games like this, I prefer room sound. As far as video, honestly I don't even think its necessary to see me. The game is what's important. But I started doing my streams that way years ago, so I'm kinda stuck with it. I don't care what the footage of ME looks like. Look at the game, not me. Lastly, as far as the channel growing, it already has way more subscribers and viewers than I would have expected. If my subscribers and views stay where they are at forever or were less I'd be just fine with that. I can't even keep up with the comments on here already.
