Awesome vid! I'm still using my 15-inch 2014 MBP for big Logic Pro projects, video editing, coding, working (doing coding in Windows 10 using Parallels) and it's still an absolute beast. I just got a new battery in it today and it's like new. I've never had a problem with this thing and despite being slow "on paper" she still hums along perfectly fine for what I use it for. I've never kept a laptop for 7 years before, never mind owning a laptop for this long and still not really feeling like I need to upgrade. Love this thing. 2015 MBPs were the absolute peak IMO but this 2014 still holds it own!

sadly I bought the version mid 2014 retina with only 8GB RAM.. If I would have bought 16GB, I could have fun using it in the future. But with this limitation, I slowly run into performance problems.
Also My MBP mid 2014 gets quiet noisy when watching videos, and whenever there is a 1080p video running in youtube and such the fans go crazy..

UPDATE - All 2014 Macbooks will not be getting MacOSX Monterey as predicted. Pretty strange cause the 2014 Mini is getting it and the Mini was a less premium device.
Apple may have their reasons though, probably due to battery age on Macbooks.

I don't get it.... why risk even slightly slowing down my MBP mid 2014 to get rounded icons. Also, while your video is very thorough and helpful, you clearly live in a 100% Apple world. I, for example, don't use Safari (Mozilla's my go-to browser) and use the entire MS Word suite, Adobe Acrobat - major OS changes always carry the risk of losing compatibility, features etc. with the non-Apple world. It would be useful to check out and mention if there are any issues. Thanks

It might be just a personal preference - but since I'm not having any issues on catalina - for me at least its not worth the update - unless I get to have the same speed.

However, my other 10 years windows laptop with the similar features (8gb ram, core i5 2.5 ghz., 250 gb ssd) is way more faster than the macbook. We all know about the product policies of Apple. I would recommend macbook 14 only for coding and doing some light duties, otherwise a newer version would probably be a better choice.

What are the benefits of Big Sur over Catalina?

    • @rizhkovs4998

It is just newer version of os. Newer versions usually include bug fixes, better optimisation, and sometimes new design.

In my case I've decided to update because of the new Notes system. That includes hashtags and smart folders based on the hashtags. In case you have an iPad, it is really worth it!

Apple are not known for supporting their devices for a really long time... Ask a windows user if they can run Windows 10 on a PC from 2010! No problems... Windows 11 has changed that now but PC was due for a shake up... Apple are terrible with making their products obsolete by stopping software support too early. I'm thinking Big Sur on my new 2014 MacBook Air will be too much for it, even though it supports it... MacOS Monterey will not support 2014 MacBooks...
