One of the people who sources beans for The Roasterie in Kansas City told me that even if a coffee isn’t labeled as shade grown, a designation many small coffee growers can’t afford to pursue, arabica beans are typically grown in shade. Look for arabica rather than robusta, which prefers sun. I realize there are other kinds of coffee, but those two make up a large part of what’s commonly available in the US, anyway.
Mark just want to let you know how much I enjoy your program. Migrate to Southeast. I drink shade coffee, This summer started all slow for my birds! A fantastic year it was for a black head chickadee, and also my house wrens. And my finch population gold & red fantastic year also. Next year, I’m planning on putting a camera in one of my boxes what I believe will be extremely exciting. Keep up the great work.
I'm a coffee drinker. Thank you for your this information, is there other brands that are available that are shade grown? Thank you for your time and research. God bless
There are other companies that distribute shade grown coffee. It is best to ask where you get your coffee. @tend7964 below had a great post about the types of beans that are typically grown in shade farms though the farmers may not have the means to get the certification.
Equal Exchange is a great brand that offers shade grown coffee. Also they have sustainable and amazing chocolate. And in addition to taking care of the forest, they take good care of the people who do the farming as well.

That is great to know. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, Mark! I didn't know about shade grown coffee until I watched this video. I will now change how I buy coffee.

Great to understand the reason.

What does a female grackle look like?
@@RichardFerstandig she is the size and shape of the males but the body lacks the iridescence. They are more brown colored
Birds that have migrated south, how do they know when it’s time to return north?
They know by the length of the day. As the days become longer they know to migrate north
Better yet, stop drinking nasty coffee! 🤢 Putrid stuff!
I am not a fan of coffee either.
Great video once again
Thank you!
