Thanks for all the seed info! I have not really ever tried having a feeder going, but maybe I will try it out. Going to enjoy learning from this channel. Have a nice one.
I use black-oil sunflower seeds that quickly attracted a small flock of house finches, some chickadees and few nuthatches. Then a pair of northern cardinals showed up and on the colder and snowier days, some blue jays will come. So I just put together a platform feeder where I'll put the jay's favourite treat of peanuts in the shell to get them coming regularly. I love seeing my little flock of house finches show up at around 8:30 every morning. For reference, I live about 75 miles east of Detroit (on the other side of Lake St Clair).
I’ve figured out that magpies really like peanuts, both shelled and in the shell. I think they like to take the peanuts in the shell and hide them away for later consumption. They also seem rather picky. I put out a mixed nut & fruit blend and the magpies apparently pick out just the peanuts and leave the rest. I live in central Montana and I like watching magpies. I also get a couple types of woodpeckers, chickadees and nuthatches to a couple suet feeders.
Thank you for your video. I also prefer black oil sunflower seeds. I live in northern Missouri and those seeds attract quite a variety of birds. It’s so much fun to watch them eat and buzz around my feeder.❤
Black oil sunflower seeds are the choice of the northern birds! especially in the winter. If we lived further south where more finches are present I would absolutely set up different feeders with different feed
Thank you! Great info! Just wanted to add-in the south I also buy mealworm for the bluebirds. Also, the copper bird feeder in the video is great for squirrel reduction, but the poor cardinals have an extremely hard time twisting their heads to eat from this feeder. Just wanted to mention that😊
I have suet in a suet holder, I put then putting mealworms on the feeder, and covering them with a little honey. Also in Pet Shop, they have strings a mullet for pirates, etc., putting one or two strings of mullet that would be a extra treat. I use shelled sunflower seeds, with a handful of crushed peanuts. I feed and water my birds daily then when the warmer weather comes in the spring, I have four hummingbird feeders and plant different flowers that will attract. the hummingbirds also have a water container near the birdfeeder which can be hung close by.
I live in Maine. I used black sunflower seeds and the birds were emptying the feeders in two days. All of a sudden they stopped coming to the feeders. I don’t know what happened. Any ideas?
There's a few things that *could* have happened: -Food somehow got spoiled (try changing seed) -Feeder could be moldy (try cleaning it) -Predators in the area like cats are hanging around -Feeder is clogged -There's plenty of natural food nearby (not likely in Winter) Try any of those things. My guess is one of the first three could be a likely culprit.
Enjoyed learning about seeds. I use sunflower seeds , and what you recommended. I do have a variety of birds. My problem is the Starlings and Blackbirds that come in flocks and the wipe out my feeders an hour. Is there any type feeders that they can't get to. I have also stopped feeding birds for weeks, hoping the Starlings would move on. It helps for bit, only for them to come back, robbing the food away from my favorite small birds. Any helpful suggestions is appreciated
That's a good question. Those are larger birds so you could get yourself a feeder with a mesh type cage on the outside of the feeder with small openings. These discourage larger birds like starlings and blackbirds from getting to the seed, only allowing smaller birds access. Hope that helps! You could also try safflower seed or nyjer seed. They don't prefer those as much.
The video has the energy of you smoking weed with your buddy at some random uncle of an uncle's house out in the middle of nowhere. There's only one lightbulb hanging off a cord in the middle of the ceiling and two hand-me-down lazy boys. Suddenly, your buddy info dumps all his cool birdseed facts and it's the best. I'm so here for it.

Thanks so much for watching! You should definitely try it out!

That's really awesome! So many birds coming to your yard! Must be a lot of fun watching them.
Thanks for your response
Most of my birds love popcorn.! Bluejays.... sparrows... woodpeckers... bluebirds....cardinals...... Blackbirds...all.

Wow! Did not know bluebirds eat popcorn! I buy them mealworms, but that is great to know!😊
Popcorn works as long as it's unsalted and unbuttered. Also only put out small amounts because it can spoil! Cool birds visiting your yard!

That's good to know! They pack a lot of energy so I'm sure the birds love them!

That seems like an awesome system! You must see some incredible birds!
I wonder if certain seed combinations go well with each other. Trying to attract everything 😂
It would be fun to run some experiments year to year to find the best combinations for your area!
