  • Among the variety of ways you can catch a trout on the fly, one method rises up above them all. Dry fly fishing embodies the essence of trout fishing. Overcoming the challenges of fishing a dry fly ultimately results in a visual and rewarding fishing experience. This method embodies the core elements of fly fishing, true to the roots of the sport.

    Fishing along the potatoshed in HF. That stretch holds a lot of big browns. Wish I had a camera there during the Green Drake hatch for a couple of weeks ago...

    Big browns on dry flies reminds me of the green river in Utah. The fish will be sipping midges in an Eddie and you throw a big hopper in their and catch a 20 inch brown!

    Great video! Liked and subscribed! I have a tough question because there are so many great places to fish in Montana. I live in Sanders County, MT, and can now relocate to anywhere in Montana. If you had to pick the best place in MT with a decent size city (e.g. Bozeman, Missoula, etc.) to be centrally located for fishing where would that be? Ty.

    • @PhelpsontheFly
      @PhelpsontheFly  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Eddy that is a great question, and is something I ask myself quite often. I personally think that Bozeman is the most centrally located metropolitan area for fly fishing. There are some incredible rivers like the Madison, Missouri, and the Yellowstone all within a days drive from town.

    loved the video, your discussion at 3:00 made me think... is Euro nyphing Fly fishing. Because your not so much casting the weight of the line vs casting the weight of the bead head of your fly. thoughts or input?

    • @PhelpsontheFly
      @PhelpsontheFly  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a very interesting thought. It's certainly similar jig fishing- bouncing the flies off of the bottom and keeping your line tight. Based on our conversation in the video I would have to say it is technically not fly fishing because you are casting the weight of the flies.

    • @southbaygladiator7748
      @southbaygladiator7748 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do you even understand euro nymphing. Before it got its fancy name, euro was tight lining. Tight lining is how fly fishing basically started. The amount of lack of knowledge involved in these comments and this video is killing me.

    Boys, back in 50s-60s you could buy spinners and rapalas for flyrods

  • @KimchiJerry
    @KimchiJerry 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Someone should tell the dude on the left that sounds high that some people use a clear water bobber and a fly and cast it on spinning gear lol I don’t but I’ve seen people use that a lot now.

  • @Codyalbertson21
    @Codyalbertson21 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    How about using a net

  • @anvilhead59
    @anvilhead59 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You can tie a rapala on your fly line (sacrilege!) but once you do, you are no longer fly fishing. Its weight may not allow the rod to load correctly. Go ahead and try it on your rod. :)
    Reminds me of Mother's Day Caddis. If a fish takes anything, assume it's your fly.

    • @PhelpsontheFly
      @PhelpsontheFly  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I might have to try that just to see what happens haha. Yes, that's pretty much how this fishing was in the light conditions. Very hard to see the spinner on the water. If I saw a rise anywhere near my fly I just set it. When in doubt, jerk it out!

  • @southbaygladiator7748

    Oh god all the people I can’t stand. Been fly fishing since I was 7. 40 years old now. Guide for a living. Seen all the fads come and go. Then we gotta listen to some 20 yr old who picked up a fly rod 2 yrs ago thinking because an indicator is on a fly line it’s not fly fishing! I imagine every time he fishes he views himself as brad Pitt in a river runs through it and has to hold himself back from jumping in. Then after a hard day of dry flying he sits back and drinks his handmade ipa, In his name brand outfit. Makes me wanna throw up. I can’t even stand fly fisherman anymore. I don’t even really know how to spin fish but honestly your friend is the type of people that make me wanna spin fish. Be careful who you let on the channel with you.
