Back in the 1990s, I worked at FedEx. I worked as both a loader and courier. I wore my 16610 for five years at the job and I can assure anyone reading: the watch is very tough. I had several things happen where I was sure I was going to look down and see a cracked crystal, but it survived fine. The wear marks were visible on the case and bracelet, but the bezel and crystal stayed pristine somehow.

I'd only be concerned about the movement after taking a big hit, but even that is pretty solid. Durable inside and out!

Great video. The whole not wearing a watch for fear of wear is a phase probably every new watch owner gets at one point or another. Back when I was in college, I scraped together a few hundred for my SARB017. While that isn't much in the grand scheme of things, it was pretty much the world to me at the time. I wanted to keep it as pristine as possible and rarely ever wore it. I did eventually mar it, and it devastated me at the time, but eventually got over it when I reminded myself that that watches were made to be worn. Ultimately, the thing that I love most about watches is the big grin I get on my face when I look at any of my watches on my wrist, imperfections and all. As a wise man once said, scars tell the whole story.

This is a great video. I absolutely love my 114060. I saved a really long time to get it, and it was everything I hoped for and more. It's a great watch with an awesome history that has had incredible influence on the entire watch industry. I wear it around the clock and it currently has more than a few scars. It is a watch designed to hold up to the rigors of life and IMO it's most enjoyable when you just put it on your wrist and don't fret when life comes at it. Even if you bang it up hard, the movement will be fine. The 3130 is an absolute monster.

@@monkeyman8265 I was 17, and went with my older brother who was in float plane pilot training "up north". He came for a visit, and I went with him to a jewelry store, and he bought a GMT Master. The jeweller asked me if I was interested in one. I was in High School, and making a dollar an hour in an after school job. He said I could put it on layaway and pay on it every two weeks. That sure doesn't happen today ! I was blowing money on teen stuff, and thought it was a forever thing. It took me a over a year to get it paid. It was somewhere under $300 $CAN.

My Sub is from 1977. It's been all over the world. It's dived in some of the most exotic vacation spots in the world. It's been through hell and back and still keeps good time. Last year after years of resistance I finally took it off its original bracelet because on several links I literally had scotch tape holding the rivets together. I have it on an Everett rubber strap now, but I long to put another era-correct Rolex bracelet back on.

I can relate to this video 100%. Always had a fascination with watches, owned everything from Seiko to gshock to bulova in the past but always loved Rolex and something about the submariner resonated with me. When I realized that it was featured in my favorite movie series of all time 007 James Bond I knew I had to have one. It’s rumored that Bond was supposedly to be wearing an Omega during filming but Sean Connery refused and wore his personal Rolex submariner instead saying it was “the true gentleman’s watch”.
I manage a group of restaurants and saved every spare dollar I had but never thought I would be able to afford one. When the stars aligned and I had the money at the time one was available, I took it and was initially SCARED to wear it for fear of scratching it. I remember the exact moment where I was at and what time it was when I first clipped it on a table. I was mortified. Until my girlfriend talked some sense into me and said basically exactly what you did. It’s art you can wear and all that matters is that you appreciate it. People waste so much time getting wrapped up in what other people think. If you like it, buy it and WEAR IT! You’ll be amazed at the conversations it starts.

I transitioned from plastic Casio digital watches to a luxury watch when i bought new in 1986 a Rolex 1016 Explorer. I didn't know any better than to wear it - so I learned that wearing a new luxury watch is what you do with a watch - luxury or not. It's a good feeling to be able to wear your watch! Good vid. Good insights. These little marvels of micro engineering (especially your Sub) are so capable and totally able to withstand a beating beyond what most of us do during a normal day. I'm all about "babying" a piece until I've decided it's a keeper and then once that's established it's fair game to develop all the lovely wear and tear/patina that makes it MY watch instead of A watch.

I have a couple of pieces I treat like a Rolex. After a couple of years I finally relented and started rotating my watches. Do I have favorites? Da*n skippy I do. However, in the end like you said, it's meant to be used. Thank you and keep the great content coming.

We're in the same situation, I guess. Of course I'll drool over a Rolex Sub but most probably if I have the cash in hand for one, I'd think over it many times before I would purchase one because of other commitments. Owning one is a dream but yeah, that's part of life and you don't always get what you want.

Make sure you talk to a jeweler NOW. The waitlist for these Rolex (especially submariners, GMT II, Yacht-master) are somewhere around 2 years. Unless you have a great friend in business, at which point you can probably buy one a year from when you start looking. Rolexes are sold out everywhere, WORLDWIDE and no jewelers, no Authorize Rolex dealers know when they are getting shipments, and when they do, they have a list of costumers who they have known and done business with for years that want them. So guess who they are gonna contact first when they get a few Rolexes in? Seriously man, if you want one for Christmas, start looking now and if you are VERY lucky, you may find one by then. (That is all assuming you do not want to pay 2x retail price... if so, you can buy them in the grey market right now - ebay, amazon, google shopping)

You're right about life being too short. Last August 8th before my wife passed away I was still hoping she would get better but as she was lying down saying she was just going to rest she told me if I ever get a chance to get a Rolex please do so considerate it from her. That she wishes she could get it for me but she didn't think she had the time. I told her time then again that we have all the time in the world she's going to get better. And we'll grow old together. She said no I don't think so time really is precious and I want you to get a watch like that and think of me. About 40 minutes later she said help me up. Looked into my eyes and dropped. I got her heart going and breathing again. But they notified me a few hours later she passed away in hospital .So now I watch watch videos and I think of her..

Bought my first Rolex back in 87, a SD and a year after that a Sub with date. Somehow was attracted to the lens on the crystal. Was slimmer than the SD and the date lens made it appearance wise a different watch. Then 2009 bought a ceramic Sub and a DS SD, I bought Rolex fairytale that there wouldn't be a SD...Then, once a ceramic SD magically appeared, grabbed one without hesitation. Followed a DS SD with 22mm lugs (the 21mm is just awful on that 44mm case and nearly 18mm height) and now I see a 41mm Sub with ceramic that more looks like a pre-ceramic. A far more elegant model if you ask me compared to the 1st ceramic edition. Would I buy it, already have. To the question now, if you can afford it, go ahead, won't disappoint you.

You’re a guitarist. I can relate to that honeymoon phase you’re talking about. Bought a 2001 secondhand Gibson in very good condition. I was caring it like a princess. After that, reality kicks in. These things are meant to be played. lol. Btw I love your work. One fine day, I hope to buy a modded Seiko from you.

great video! thinking about getting the 41mm sub for myself. It looked good on ur wrist. by the way what size is your wrist? Do you think it would be too big on 15.5cm wrist? Thanks

Love the Sub, but (on principle) I won't pay grey market prices to own one. Unfortunately the waiting period at my local AD is somewhere north of five years, so unless stainless steel sports watches fall out of fashion some time soon (unlikely), I probably won't be getting one from them either. In the meantime, my SMP300, Black Bay in Bronze and early 70s Ploprof will do nicely.

Thank you for this very video...picked up a 41 mm date a week ago and was concerned about wearing it...should I flip it??? Your video provided the validation I needed to use it and treat it like my BB '58...indeed a long time dead, just enjoy the Sub and don't sweat the occasional scratch. Thank you

wow....it is a refreshing thought......and though the sub he owns should easily be able to fetch him 10k plus in resale....it is a great way to enjoy what you have bought.

The best time is when you’ve got over the barrier of worrying about marking or scratching your watch, until then you’re always slightly nervous of enjoying the watch. Just get the damn thing worn I say, unless you’re holding it for somebody else to enjoy down the line. If so, what’s the point? The problem with this watch is that if you’re wearing it when trying other watches they just don’t measure up. For me however the date and cyclops makes the watch and gives the full Rolex experience. I even prefer the Breitling style beefing up of the case, it adds to the masculine tank character of the tool watch and they are pushing it back to being a dressy piece not a piece for a rugged outdoor lifestyle. I’ve also had mine 6 years now and it just keeps on delivering. It’s the piece I always look forward to wearing, mainly at the weekends. As for the current Rolex game with hyper inflated prices, I think it’s unfair on guys new to the game seeing good watches rise in price away to the skies like helium balloons. As for me, I ain’t paying for some greedy flippers luxury holiday. They nailed it with the first gen ceramic for me personally, and buying it at list easily from an AD back then is something lost today. The mighty 3135 just keeps ticking along like a Diesel engine in a tank. No matter what.

I’ve owned my steel Datejust II for the past 6 years and it’s full of scratches. But it still works perfectly.
Rolex makes tool watches that are designed to take a real beating. Still loving mine to this day.

No luxury watches for me yet. I have a hard time justifying the purchase based on service costs if I were to damage it, or it just needed a good tear down and oiling. I likely worry too much.

I’ve had mine for a year, mine has way more visual usage marks than yours once you get the first few the rest don’t matter anymore. Each mark is a part of you and something you’ve done. I’m a maintenance technician and I daily wear mine. Rolex designs these to be used daily by their owners, supposedly these watches are tested to take shocks up to 5000G. So those activities will cause stuffs and bumps and bruises on the watch.

I would love a 40mm sub or the new 41mm. But its way out of my reach with both not being sold at retail. I'm considering a superclone since that would be more affordable. Thoughts?
99% identical today, and at a price that seems more forgiving on the wallet.

I love wearing watches but since covid i stopped wearing them because i can't wear them at work 😥 i do stick to cheaper watches though xD my annual income is lower than what you paid for that 😬 oh well, maybe one day i'll earn enough to save up for a super nice watch. not trying to shame anyone who buys the expensive ones, i understand the craftsmanship that goes into producing amazing watches therefore pulling the price up.

I have the same watch, same year. What a beauty. Buying a Rolex sport model in 2021 is foolish because you can't get one without paying over retail, in fact nowhere near retail. I love mine, wear it every day and do everything in it. Mine looks far more worn than yours. :)
