The Ruts were/are one of the best punk bands of the period. Malcolm's overdose, at the age of just 25 yrs old, was truly tragic because the guy had a message, talent, and potential to be something massive. Malcolm Owen (RIP).
@@robertcaffrey6097 not quite the same as seeing them live but I remember pogoing and windmill dancing around the dance floor back in late 70s to this band trying to impress this girl who looked like Debbie Harry..she just ignored me..
They went to town recording this whole album. It sounds awesome. Most punk albums have half-assed production and sound compressed and flat. The songs themselves are pretty good and sometimes very good, the playing is great and the sound is amazing. If you're the "audio type" then it's worth listening to just because of how good it sounds.
Sadly Malcolm passed way too soon in 1980. That’s like Nirvana without Kurt, the Beatles without John and George, and Queen without Freddie. Malcolm Owen was someone way ahead of his time, and ironically gone way before his time.
Seriously, I could've heard this song without knowing the year, and would've guessed 90s or even early 2000s. The fact it's actually from the 70s makes it that much more special. The Ruts were way ahead of their time.
For a few weeks, back in 1980, I used this song as my alarm-clock : I was 13 and needed that push to get out of bed, so I prepared the cassette each evening, so that I only had to press the "play" button and "whooosh", there was the much needed adrenalin I needed to start the school day, starting with the menacing guitar notes and... BANG !
The Ruts were such a brilliant band and deserved a much bigger audience but then again some music is perhaps just consigned to be being below the radar no matter how great.
Interesting to think of them as becoming mainstream. As great as they were I don't think they were ever destined to be that. Anyway, mainstream is often for the mediocre...!
@@patrickfitzgerald409 I agree and maybe mainstream wasn’t the right word to use.. the Ruts still have somewhat of a cult following. They would have been bigger than The Clash for example had Malcom stayed alive..
@@patrickfitzgerald409 as am I, but having said that, there’s not denying the Ruts were the most talented of that era and although it’s speculation as we’ll never really know... it’s a popular opinion that The Ruts were the band that stood above the rest at the time, real shame it was cut short..
Love Malcolm's wardrobe choice of the worldwide fashion trend of 1979-80 known as The Brights..bright colors indeed..Umm 1980 surely must go down as a tragic, but significant year musically. In many ways it signaled the end of eras (AC/DC, Joy Division & The Beatles), but also new beginnings (AC/DC Brian Johnston era & New Order) We lost Bon Scott, Ian Curtis, John Lennon and we lost Malcolm Owen. The very sad part about Malcolm's passing was the potential left behind..The music that remains is absolutely solid & ages so well..bloody heroin it's a vile drug..nothing hip about it at all...long live The Ruts
Loved the ruts dad got me into them they were on the go well before I was born could've been the best band if Malcom died 😢 rip Melcom Owen ,couldve been the best front man ever 💔 such a pity Herion takes so many life's what he left was brilliant just imagine what else could've been made 💔
I saw The Ruts 17th June 1979 they were supporting The Damned in the Locarno Bristol The Slits supported The Ruts, I was 14 years old, young Punk best days of my life, seen em all Pistols , Clash twice , Jam , Stranglers 3 times , Specials In 79 before the split , and pretty much every other relevent group you can name from those days. Loved every second of it , back stage with the Clash , The Jam and boat loads of others , If only I had a time machine.
Awesome. A british street punk band that make the Clash look like the Rubettes.I first heard them in 1978 and adored them from that moment. Yes, it's very sad that Malcolm Owen died tragically early in 1980 bt their legacy lives on. May I recommend 'In a Rut'? or 'Savage Circle'?
Could you imagine if Malcolm had managed to get clean - a Clash/Ruts super tour? Two punk bands that wore their reggae influences on their sleeves. Sadly, it wasn't meant to be. Hope Malcolm is jamming with St Joe in the great beyond.
phenomenal band, loved "The Crack". remember i used to cruise down to the Red Lion in Brentford on a Sunday lunchtime for a few beers; they always had a "makeshift" band playing on that stage with a hole in the floor, for nout i say "makeshift" coz we'd get Mick Moody and Bernie Marsden, Nick Lowe, etc. Anyways, was in there on a Sunday and Foxy walked in resplendent in his trench coat and a Strat - plugged in to Channel 2 on whatever amp was up there and then proceeded to musically demolish the place with a stunning performance. bought him a beer after, then he bought me one and well, you know - what a great bloke, nattered for hours - RIP Paul; you're sadly missed...
Pure joy to spot this great vid! It looks like they were having as much fun filming it as I was watching it. When talent, creativity and energy unite so spectacularly, we got The Ruts... An epic among their MANY fantastic songs!
The Ruts had quite an interesting sound. It's almost kinda of like if the Pistols and Clash combined but cutting out all the duff parts. I also think that there were many hard rock pop rock and new wave rock delivering this exact sound but with Owen it turned into this whole other thing.
What a fuck me tight band could've should've been the biggest listening to this band this I was 13 years old now 57 years old great funking times of great music and even better memories to grow up in a great musical era the best 👌 years of my life and still listening punk will never die

The Crack is such a great album. Wonder what would’ve happened to them longer term with Malcolm. Ruts DC were unbelievably good supporting The Stranglers.
They were just brilliant. First proper band I ever saw when I was 14 in 1979 at Cambrige Corn Exchange. Got served beer with no questions asked lol. There was a mini riot outside and inside because a bunch of right wing skinheads turned up. Malcolm got hit full in the face by a can of beer thrown by one of the Nazi twats! Gave em hell and then launched into Jah War. The whole band was astonishing tight and powerful. To this day, the best gig I've been to. Remember it like it was yesterday 😎
I recently had published on the Analog Planet site my writeup of the top 15 punk albums. I included The Ruts Complete Peel Sessions album. IMO it is even better than The Crack because it contains 3 very great songs not on The Crack and the playing is just as magnificent as on the studio album.
