    Sharing my experiences with ape hanger handlebars. Highly debated for sure! Get the scoop on height, comfort, position, handling, and more. Let me know if you've tried apes or if you want to try them out. Also cast your vote in the video: do you prefer apes or not?

    Going with the same bars on my 2020 low rider s. Dropping my bike off tomorrow morning. Only i picked the 14 inches since I’m 5”11 with a whiplash seat i think it’ll work perfectly. Seeing this video makes me happy i went with those bars. Kinda different too since everybody its doing t bars on the low riders.

    Nice video, im a fairly new rider at 6'0" and come to dislike the mini apes on my 21 bob, and opted to go with a breakout drag bar set-up instead. Along with the forward controls and Saddleman profiler seat i feel more stretched out with a clamshell seating position.

    • @RonsWorkshop
      @RonsWorkshop  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey James - thanks for the kind words! I considered the drag bars too. And I was pleasantly surprised that I like the forward controls so much. I also just snagged a Saddlemen Renegade. I like the solo springer I have but when I twist the throttle I slide off the back - and I’m about to bump up the power so I’m looking for something that’ll keep me planted :)

    I liked the stock handlebars but they were a bit low so I added a 5 inch riser. Original wiring was fine but I had to get a upper brake and clutch line 4 inches longer than stock. Very simple job but they make a huge difference.

    • @RonsWorkshop
      @RonsWorkshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey John - that’s a perfect solution! I liked the width and pullback of the stock bars also. That’s great that you didn’t have to extend any wiring! When I bought my Street Bob the dealer told me that Harley-Davidson motorcycles are the most customizable bikes in the world. That seems to be the case indeed :)

    I’m glad I found this video, I’m looking at getting some 16” apes for my Slim and I’m also 6’1” and I have long arms that are closer to someone who’s 6’4”-6’5” and I was wondering if I could get away with something like a 17”-18”. I think I might check out the ones you have and that’s why I like those sharper angles because the way it fits the lines with the Slim. I’ve looked at tons of photos and that’s what I’m going to go with. Great video and explanation!

      Hey Krusty - check the size of your current bars at the riser clamps - if the bar is 1" diameter at the clamps, then these would fit. I expect it will be the same size but you should double-check to be sure.

    Great video - I got a 2019 street bob, last year and I am just now starting to do mods. The first one I had was got rid of the stock seat.. hate it! I noticed you had a cool set of grips and was curious what kind and what your thoughts are on them?

      Thanks! I went with the Avon Air Cushion Grips and so far I've been really happy with them. Decent price too - you can find great deals if you search a bit. What seat did you go with? I went with Mother Road Customs, and I'll be posting a video about it sometime soon.

      @@RonsWorkshop Appreciate the info on the grips, I am looking into them now. If you ever feel it, I'd be interested in a review of the grips you have (likes and dislikes). I went with the Saddlemen Stepup Seat and really love it! But to be fair I choose it.. 1 cause of the back support ( I got lower back trouble from my time in the army) and 2 cause it was the only seat at the time I could find reviews on different seats out there for my bike. I look forward to seeing your video on the seat you picked and what your thoughts are on it.

I'll be sure to let you know via this thread when I plan to go live, and after the fact with a link to the video -- even if I don't do it as live stream. Maybe I can do the live stream this weekend. great video! I'm looking to put some 14" DNA Monster Apes on my 2019 Softail Slim but I'm having a hell of a time trying to source the correct upper clutch cable and upper brake cable (ABS) part numbers; there's a lot of misinformation out there. What OEM part numbers would you recommend?

    • @RonsWorkshop
      @RonsWorkshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Jake - check this video description for a link to the upper clutch cable part numbers. For reference, I went with 17” apes and stock risers, and I ended up with a 46” upper clutch cable. You might contact Spiegler about the brake line. My bike doesn’t have ABS but I had them make me a new line to my exact measurements. Let me know if that helps.

    • @RonsWorkshop

      Lol I actually had to try three different cables. First one was too short, then too long, and then the current one that ended up ok. I could probably go 1” shorter but a little extra length is good to avoid binding.

    I’m getting the same bars but noticed there’s not a 16” like most manufacturers produce 16”-18” and noticed these are 17”. I’m having trouble deciding on a cable extension length. Most makers such as burly make 16” or 18” what set did you go with and what length? I’m concerned because I’ve noticed the brake and clutch cables are pre measured and I’m afraid if I go with a 16” they may be too short and if I go with the 18” I’ll have a bunch of gaudy brake and clutch cables stretched out everywhere. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    • @RonsWorkshop
      @RonsWorkshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Justin - Check the video description for a list of all the Harley part numbers that I used when I did the swap. My Softail uses the new two-piece clutch cable, so my upper cable length will only apply if you have the same two-piece cable. I also went with a 49" Spiegler brake hose. Let me know if that helps, or if you need more info.

    How are these bars for lane splitting? Are these bars drastically wider than stock bars on a fxbb? What brand of brake and clutch cable did u go with?

    • @RonsWorkshop
      @RonsWorkshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Admin Admin - haven’t heard from you in a while! We can’t lane split here in Florida so I don’t have firsthand experience. The width should be about the same as the stock mini-ape bars. The taller bars may actually be better to get the bars above some of the mirrors.
      I used Harley OEM upper clutch cable and a Spiegler brake line.
      Hope that helps!

    • @RonsWorkshop
      @RonsWorkshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Nickolas - welcome to the channel and to bikes! My guess is they will, but you need to confirm the clamp diameter. One easy way is to look up official Harley bars that fit and see what clamp diameter those are. The Todd’s bars that I installed have a 1” clamping area, which is quite common. Let me know if that helps.

    I’m in between the 1-1/2” thick 17” and the 14” bars. Do you know if the rise is actually where the hands are, or are they measured to the tippy top? I need my hands to be around the 14”-16” range.

    • @RonsWorkshop
      @RonsWorkshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The advertised height *should* be from center of the clamping area to the center of the highest point. End rise would be from the center of the clamping area to the center of the bar end. See if you can find any info on end rise for the bars you like. But based on wanting your hands to be at 14-16” I bet you’ll want the 17” height. Let me know what you end up with.
