Thanks for having literally the only Pro MB video showing upward comp on vocals I’d been hunting for this. Def my favorite upward compressor for vocals.
I used downwards expansion on a guitar signal to get rid of hiss in the tone that a client sent me... whenever open notes were held the signal would create a lot of noise in the amp sim. Obviously it was poorly recorded, but they weren't willing to rerecord, and we don't always have that option when clients have limited cash, so I had to improvise. It changes the tone a bit, but by putting a downwards expander in the noisy range with the right settings... I got rid of the noise in the open parts and the client was happy.
I think the compression is focus on the glue. Like the drum example that the punch and the room sustain suppose to be confluent. The expansion is creating independence. Like the drum punch is desired to be way more attack than sustaining. I used expansion once in fast rap vocal to enhance the words beginning attack to get more power on it. Learned😊
I knew I was missing something in my toolbox. Expansion! Thanks for explaining it in such an easy way to understand. I've been using automation all this time...
I think in the text overlay at 01:42 is an error. I believe you're stating it correctly.. At any rate these are some of the most helpful videos so thank you, keep up the good work Joey Sturgis Tones!
You played an example using both upward & downward comp on the vocal but didn’t show the downward compressor. Were you using Pro MB or something different? And what downward comps do you typically use in conjunction with using Pro MB as an upward comp? Thanks🙏🏼
I recently discovered upwards compression in FF Pro-MB, really love it to sort of "push" certain frequency ranges without making it peak harder. Like when adding clarity on voice, or driving the warmth on the side of the master
Thank you so much for this! I still need to practice with these ideas and probably watch this video a few more times for it to really sink in because I want to master dynamic control to better my mixes! Super clear and helpful! Subbed!
You say what it is but you dont said how to get it , what are the parameters to obtain one or another in a traditional compressor , you only used Fabfilter
okay so this may be a newb observation: if i use a downward compressor or an upward expander, the result stays audibly the same - the peaks and trophs move closer to each other. now using a downward expander, that i can get behind. it is basically a gate with a bit more fine-tuneability. now is upward compression the same as using a slow attack and release on a regular compressor? it seems to be doing the same thing. lotsa questionmarks here still.
upward compression takes the low part of the signal and brings it closer to the peak. so the transient stays unaffected. a slow attack and release would leave the transient alone as well, but duck the sustain so it would make the transient stick out more. if you used a slow attack but a fast release, and increased makeup gain that might be a similar end result between upward and downward compression, the difference is, the downward compressor would be actively shaping the transient as the audio passed through. The upward compressor would be leaving it completely alone because the transient wouldn't be triggering the threshold of the upward compressor. its confusing but I hope that makes sense.
@@frankiewylde7649 I would note that upwards compression does affect the attack of your sound. It needs the signal of the transient to snap back to zero after having boosted it in the quiet part, so you gotta use look-ahead or a really fast attack to be ahead of that
I'm having trouble understanding why Upwards compression is any different than setting make-up gain and extra downwards compression to compensate the boosted highs. Is there even a difference? Or is this just a streamlined way of doing what i described? Thanks
Who needs audio school when you got these JST videos
we must need to go to a professional studio to know the professional mixing tactics else we won't get proper guidance or experience
I'm gonna have to watch this video a couple of times to fully get it xD
Yea....same.

Thanks for sharing!
The comparison waveform sweeps are really great at showing what happens. Good video!
I just love these just videos, both Joey and miama clearly love what they're doing and it comes through! Thanks so much
This is the most informative JST video ever. I’ve learned more today than I have in the last 5 years
20myears of trying to figure out what I hate about sound and this explains so much. Thanks. After Mother’s Day I’ll be expanding my palate.
I was always scared of using upward and downward expansion but after watching this video now I can't wait to use it.

I love the "Attack Atack!" examples 🤘🔥❤

Joey, you are a good teacher
Bravo! This is the best full spectrum explanation I've seen yet on a topic that is quite hard for newer engineers to comprehend.
Ur the goat bruh no cap. 2 years ago putting mfs on some real game
Very good explanation. This video needs more views!

Love the music at the end
Awesome Video Joey! Super helpful!
Thanks for watching! What should I make a video about next?
Hi and many thanks Sir ! It’s a very rich video with many precious advices. Congratulations !

These videos are incredibly useful. Thank you so much.
Glad you like them!
@@joeymusic Super grateful. Will get DF-CLIP 2 today as well.
GREAT CLASS!!! Thank you!

Amazing video as always, this is super helpful. I had no idea how useful this, it almost seems necessary for heavier music

hell of a video sir
lightbulb moment!!

Expansion moves peaks and troughs away from each other no matter which direction it is

thanks for explain
Quality knowledge 🔥
OTT is so powerful
Right when I needed this haha!
Thank you Joey
Nah bro this vid is too good bless bro

A difference is the shape of the peaks.
Please post more videos in your vip club 🙏
es impresionante ver tus videos eres un buen productor y un buen maestro simplemente gracias!
Great vid thabks
I'm using expander on bass to make it more stable. Tuning is super low.
Cool
