This should literally be the first lesson an English student should practice. I've only been practising for a few weeks and this is the first time I've seen an example using breathing techniques. This one lesson has not only improved my pronunciation skills, it's dramatically improved my listening skills for proper emulation. 谢谢
I should watch and practice with this video daily for a month or so... 😊 As a Spanish speaker, most of these sounds are quite difficult to me. Many thanks, Grace!
For school I have to make a commentary that contains Chinese names so I wanted to know how to pronounce them correctly, but I ended up watching several videos of yours! You explain everything very clearly and I really appreciate the use of the IPA, the drawings and the "your turn" parts. Also, the esthetic of your videos is really pleasing. It all makes it more easy and enjoyable to learn. Thank you!
This is my second time practicing the first four letters of Chinese Consonants with your videos. The way you delivered them is very simple and easy to understand. Thank you, Grace!
I am so glad that I found your channel. I am a native English speaker and am a beginner in learning Mandarin. I wanted to find out how to correctly pronounce the constants and vowels before I got in the habit of incorrectly saying it. I truly need to see the tongue position as well as the lips and air flow. I also appreciate you practicing each constant with me. You are so helpful and I thank you.
Thank you Grace for such a detailed phonetic breakdown!!! Every few months I try to bring myself back to the basics by pausing my new learning and drilling pronouncation for a few days. Your videos are among the best, that's for sure!
I am very thankful for your videos, especially this one. It is in no doubt help beginners a lots to have better pronunciation in Chinese. I have gone through a lot of videos for those tricky sounds, z ,c, zh, ch, sh, x , and none goes near your videos' level of helpfulness. Thanks again.
This was PERFECT!! For years, I had no idea what the different was between [j q x] and [zh ch sh]; this video went over it perfectly, and I can hear the difference now!! Thanks so much for this beginner-friendly (and imo, beginner-perfect) tutorial on Chinese consonant pronunciaition!
Thank you so much! I had been struggling with hearing the difference and of course being able to produce the different sounds for q and j, z and c, etc.
i just watched all of your constant pronunciation videos and i already sound way better. I've been learning Mandarin for 5 years at uni with mainland China teachers, but I'm wondering if I'm now going to have a Taiwanese accent from your pronunciation videos. anyway, thank you so so much for making these videos to help me sound way better when saying words! Thank you Thank you THANK YOU!!
The graphics showing the proper position os the tongue are everything to understand and get a better pronunciation. thank you so much!! From a person that had tried to learn the language before and had given up 24 hours later. Greetings from Venezuela!
This video is very helpful, thank you very much for making this! The examples and diagrams are very well done, I greatly appreciate the effort you put into making this.
This video is truly amazing! It has tremendously improved my pronunciation! It’s seriously underrated! Thank you so much for the great content :) From the tongue position, breath and practice the video was legit perfect! Hope you get more recognition and subscribers!!!
the best videos ever , for learning Mandarin , so clear and well explained thank you ❤, I loved all the videos I have watched so far and happy to see more videos .
This comment might be three years too late, but I wanted to say thank you for making this video. I was struggling on my own to emulate certain sounds and simply being told to "aspirate" didn't help. The way this video grouped together the similar tongue positions to show the difference between aspirate and no aspirate made it finally click in my brain. Now I can finally practice making the sounds correctly!
谢谢你! Thank you so much!! It's an amazing and helpful video! Thanks to you I understood the difference between all Chinese consonants. It helps a lot in listening exercises!
Hi Grace! That's was super helpful! Thank you so much for your work . It's so rare to find videos where Chinese sounds are represented so well. Could you also do the video about an/ang en/eng etc sounds? it would be so cool. 拜托你!😄 Btw your other videos are also really great 😊
thank you for all of your videos!!! im learning chinese at the moment an you videos really help me to get a better understanding of all these pronunciations!!!!
THIS IS THE MOST AMAZING VIDEO!!! People have always confirmed that my Chinese sounds off but no one could or wanted to explain why! I immediately started drilling mouth positions and have experienced a lot more peace during reunions. If you ever can create a similar master video for the vowels, especially for ㄞㄠㄡ, it would very appreciated and beloved. Your work makes a difference, Thank You.
Grace is saying the difference between d/p, d/t, g/k, and j/q is "aspirated", saying that it's the amount of air used to say the sounds. However, she doesn't explain that the first one in each pair is "voiced" - and uses your vocal cords. You can tell the difference because your vocal cords vibrate more - you can feel the different if you put your hand on your throat when making the sounds.
Thank you, I love your pronunciation videos! And this was fantastic, having them all as a recap in one video. Makes it a lot easier for refreshing knowledge.
Great lesson in how to pronounce the consonants. You nail it perfectly, and with great patience. Best mandarin tutorial I've come across yet! Xie xie Grace! Xx.
This was very helpful! I'd love to see even more videos about mastering Chinese consonants! I loved how you provided word pairs that used different consonants you were teaching. That helped me understand how they sound different when used in natural language. Thank you again for this and all your other videos.
Your method is wonderful, you're such an amazing teacher with a great didactic, besides you're also gorgeous. You deserve millions of subscribers! The best channel to learn Chinese, for sure! You make everything looks chineasy! ^^
Thanks Grace, this was a really helpful video. I feel like I sound more native-like already! I would love it if you made more pronunciation videos like these as I think its important to be understood well by native Mandarin speakers, I don't want them to work too hard when trying to understand me hahaha. Will you be moving onto vowels by any chance now?
TKG1206 Haha pronunciation is really important when you communicate with others indeed! I’ll think about making some videos about vowels! Thanks for the feedback and suggestion:)
the difference between z and c and zh and ch drives me nuts as a spanish speaker :( so hard to pronounce them correctly and not mixing them. But great video, I hope I'll get better with practise. Thank you so much for your videos, I enjoy them a lot
Xie xie. (gongshou). I have just started learning. Also learning Chinese culture. Oh I am Canadian, and I am taking free Mandarin lessons at my local library. Canada respects all cultures. My room mates and land lady are Chinese. And pengyou.
pronouncing B needs use of vocal cords, but P is just need lips and burst of air. Four parts in the head and throat do the job of creating human speech in any language: vocal cords( glottis and epiglottis included) , tongue and the way it needs to be curled, teeth (in relation to tongue and to the position of lower jaw whether clinched teeth etc) , nose+sinus (sinus cavity with controlled exit from nose like in M you use vocal cords+ complete exit from nose vs, N, which is actually 2 step vowel: first step is vocal cords+ nose and second step is through curled tongue that touches the palate of the mouth + vocal cords) to verify this, try to pronounce M with closed mouth and you will see that it is totally natural sounding, but when it comes to pronouncing N, you cant pronounce it completely with gripped nose or blocked mouth. The same story goes about the rest of them. We need to know all 4 for each consonant and vowel . THanks
Very useful video! I see people only focusing on the tones but I think getting the consonants rights is also key to better pronounciation. By the way I got to use the little mandarin I know on 圣诞 talking with chinese people, I live in the part of Paris where there's a lot of asian people more specifically chinese. Know that you contributed to it so thanks 😊 谢谢你! Keep on making videos!
Hi Grace, your video is a great source for beginners to pick up pronunciations in Mandarin! If you need a hand on illustration in videos I am glad to help!
While the b-, p-, m-, f-, d- and the such are easier to pronounce on a basic level, I couldn't find any material on them which always made me feel quite insecure about my pronunciation. Thanks for nailing it.
Thank you very much, Grace! Your explanation is very clear and easy to follow. It helps me a lot to distinguish these groups j, q, x; zh, ch, sh and z/c/s. Extraordinary video 💐💐💐
The time and effort you put into these videos is very commendable and really helpful to all the beginners who love to learn chinese. Thank you so much! I will definitely watch all your videos and learn how to speak chinese like a native speaker!
My Chinese is relatively conversational, but I’m always trying to sound less “foreign-ey” so I don’t have to constantly have those pre-conversations with people about how, yes, I’m a foreigner, and also yes, I speak Chinese.
only way this video would be improved is to include an inset video of the teacher actually pronouncing the words since this doesn't show the lips position (which for some chinese sounds is wide and flat whereas english tends to round lips). i've seen other teachers showing their faces as they pronounce these problem sounds
Ann Onymous Hello! You can go to my another three videos about those problem sounds. I showed how I pronounce them (you can see how to put your lips) :) :)
The letters ✉️ b and p is like kissing or giving mouth 👄 to mouth first aid... aspiration and inspiration... it's easy.. it🤪 just takes a lot of time and practice
