A note from Barry on this performance...
This is from the shows we did in Manila in 1992 and I couldn’t be happier to share this one with you.
I’ll never forget my first phone interview announcing that we were coming to the Philippines for the first time.
As I was waiting to be connected to the interviewer, my publicist who was conferenced on the phone with me, whispered, “They just told me that you’re a God in the Philippines!"
I said, “Well, that sounds good!”
Of course, I thought she was just kidding around, but when we arrived there, the greeting was insane. Hundreds of people met me at the airport, the TV shows I did carried on as if I were Sinatra!
As the concerts neared, I heard my music on the radio non-stop. And the music that preceded or followed my songs, sounded very much in the style of my music.
We played a huge Stadium and both nights drew more the 50,000 people!
And what concerts they were!
These beautiful Philippine people had taken my music and me to their hearts since the first day “Mandy” was released. They loved the romantic style of records I had been making.
Getting to know them, it all made sense. Everyone I met in Manila was kind, helpful and loving. They were the definition of romance. I’ll never forget those days.
And I’ll never forget those shows!
The audience was amazing.
I was greeted like a long lost brother. They knew every song and sang along with each one.
The biggest shock was that their all-time favorite song was… and this really amazed me…”As Sure As I’m Standing Here”.
I’ve always loved this song, but it had been buried amongst the bigger hit records from those years. But not in Manila!
I had totally forgotten how the song went and my band had never played it.
We rehearsed it during our sound check and did the song during the first concert. And all 50,000 people sang along with it, word for word!
We dug through the archives and found a video of that first concert.
It’s a little timeworn, but you’ll be able to get a sense of that show.
I’m so glad enough people requested this concert. It’s one of my favorite shows and it reminds me of those beautiful people who treated us with such love.
I really hope you enjoy this one as much as I do.

I was over the moon when I experienced this magical performance of Barry. The first night performance in Manila. Barry would do this skit in his southeast Asian tour where a particular song in one of his albums is a hit only in that country. "As sure as I'm standing here" from his "Trying to Get the Feeling" album from 1975 is the one for the Philippines. It's only fitting that he recorded this magical concert on his first night performance to capture spontaneity from Filipinos. It was magical to hear fans and patrons sing along as Barry performs. What a night. Thank you Barry. Love you so much.

I dream you are singing to me as my situation is so complicated and horrible. My husband with dementia and I had to have him evicted from the house as he almost killed me in one of his dementia rages. Barry....I haven't listened to this one for a month. I think when I first found it, I played it so many times every night that it really got stuck in my mind. It would not go away so I just stopped looking at in for a couple of weeks. It is a very sweet song and very romantic and emotional. All the way to Manila and you have thousands of fans there. Great that you were there. I was at Barry's Christmas Concert last December in Chicago. I remember the first time that I saw Barry was in 1975 at Ravinia Park in Highland Park, IL. He did many of his commercials that he wrote. A really outstanding performer!!!!!

Barry................This song is near the top of my 9 page playlist. It is so romantic and realistic as I am sure many of us have gone through things like this. I know I have as I was married to a brutal wife abuser who almost killed me the last time. You are the one that keeps me calm with your Videos and ManilowTV. Without them, I think I would have committed suicide with "Lay Me Down" playing in the background. Now I have no family as they have all taken my husband's side and he definitely has dementia and does not remember anything. Thank you Barry for these videos and TV. Barry.......Whenever I am feeling down and out, I need to go to your videos and play this one. It makes me cry, but they are tears of joy for being able to listen to this one whenever I want. 1975: When Debbie heard this, she cried, and I would hold her and say I would do anything possible to make this true. Time, her family and religion ended that. For many years after, even after she passed, I could not play this. Finally, I can, and I try not to cry.

I was working at one of the malls in Manila when Barry had this concert. And yes, that was 1992 like just yesterday. Too shame I don't have the chance to watch but prior to the concert and even after, his current and previous albums were played non-stop inside the mall while we jammed with it. Of course, we knew almost every lyrics. Needless to say, because we're Filipinos. lol!

There will NEVER be another Barry Manilow because no one does things the was you do. Your smiles, your facial expressions that match that part of the song.
