  • THRIFTING Has Gone From SUB-CULTURE To MAINSTREAM!
Everything in life changes over time and when sub-cultures becomes mainstream it effects how that culture survives and who remains part of it. We went on a family thrifting mission and saw first hand how many people have taken up thrift shopping since we started doing this so many years ago! We are just going to continue doing things that we enjoy and staying positive with everything life throws our way! #thrifting #culture #vlog

I have thrifted all my life. I grew up wearing clothes from yard sales and thrift stores. I never cared what anyone thought about me. I learned how to flip things from a young age and still do to this day, I flip things online. I get a thrill from the hunt. Sadly, thrift stores have caught on and now price things so high. I still get lucky because I source all sorts of things. My 10 year old Daughter and I also dumpster dive. We love keeping things out of the landfill and we donate almost everything to our local food pantry and other things go on a table in front of our house for free. :) I enjoy your family so much and I appreciate your outlook on life.

I think the thrift stores caught on and are now the re-sellers competition. I don't see them selling as much stuff now though because most shoppers aren't re-sellers and they're pricing their average customers out. I think garage sellers are starting to do the same.

Tucker, I can totally relate to what you were saying at the end of this video. As someone probably your parents age, who has been thrifting, trash picking, garage and estate saleing all of my life, it totally used to be a niche market that has gone mainstream and now thrift stores, ppl at all stages of what I call the " source chain" want their cut now, which has driven up the prices at thrift stores, garage sales and even flea markets! It has also caused me to take a giant step away from it to rethink how I am negatively contributing to the growing problem!
In my opinion, thrift stores started out being a source for low income people to find affordable clothing! That is and always should be it's prime purpose! Then earlier in the 2000s, goth and hipster kids ( my daughter included) loved shopping there for unique and cheap clothing! I remember two of my most pure golden scores while thrifting, was a green and white Newport cigarette sweater! By the time I found that, people were so not into wearing clothing that advertised tobacco products! ( it was probably a later 70s- early 80s pullover sweater, that I found in abt 2003! ) but it was so one of a kind that it was right up my daughter's alley! Another was a never worn mechanics one piece gray jumpsuit, with the name tag " Eddie" sewn into the chest on the left side! That was a prized possession of hers all through high school, but those scores are so few and far between now a days bc you have every ebay seller and youtuber that has a channel on flipping thrift shop finds for money, sourcing at goodwill and salvation army, that the prices there have gotten so ridiculously high, that the ppl who thrift stores were originally intended for, can no longer afford to shop there! To me it is very sad! Goodwill also sells bulk boxes of jewelry online. There is no guarantee that the jewelry is wearable, but it was a great source for crafters who were repurposing the jewelry! The boxes become available on Fridays and within seconds of going on sale, they are sold out now, bc people do whole TH-cam videos of jewelry " unboxings" and they sell the wearable jewelry off on eBay, and sell the broken stuff off to crafters! It really has made me not want to be part of the problem any longer!
I see youtubers who film themselves going to garage sales, they will and it is especially heartbreaking to see them do it to elderly people having garage sales, they will find a vintage toy or figurine or whatever, the older people will be selling it for 5 bucks, they know they can get 100 for it on ebay, and they will still ask if the older person will take less for the dirt cheap price they are asking for it!
Don't get me wrong Tucker, there are people like you and Sammie, who are very fair in reselling the items! I still remember when you gave all those basketballs to those kids at the park! ❤
But there are youtubers that I have had to stop watching bc I will not watch someone gloating over how they jacked a seller down to just a buck or two for an item, knowing full well it was worth hundreds of dollars!
I resold items on ebay in the early 2000s and I had fun doing it! I always sold my items with auctions, so that buyers could pay what it was worth to them. I considered going back to selling on ebay again during the pandemic but I just saw what was going on and I personally did not feel good about it!
Just like you, if I find something that I can make a few bucks on, I'll sell it on FB marketplace, but sourcing all day at thrift shops so I can Jack up the prices to resell on ebay, I just don't have the conscious for at all!
Sorry for the long comment, just wanted to get my opinion out there! Loved this video!!

You guys remind me so much of me and my family. In the same type of business, hustling to find merchandise and taking our newborn with us everywhere to buy and sell. She was 2+ years old and helped us pack up at the end of outdoor antique/collectibles shows. She knew how to wrap even fragile items up in the white packing paper or bubble wrap and put them back into the boxes or bins to take home. Everyone we knew in the business from yard sales, tag sales, doing shows, etc. knew her since she was only a few weeks old. We got to spend so much more time with her than most parents do. I only worked part time at my regular job (primarily to have family health insurance) and my other half worked from home and was with our little one while I was at my office.
I still feel blessed to have had so much time with my only child from the time she was born. I know Finley will benefit from having had both of you around as she grows up too.

Our ARC Thrift here in Arizona is by far the best thrift store I have ever been too. They have the inside store and an outside store. I mostly shop in the outside store. A shopping cart full of stuff is $5, a piece of clothing is 25 cents, newer Kirby vacuums $3, I have found 100 year old antiques, desktops, laptops, tablets, computer lcd screens, and more. On the average, they charge me a dollar or less for a few items when I go. These stores are all over the U.S., but I'm not sure if they are run the same way. They line up shopping carts full of stuff outside and you pick through. They add more carts as the others are depleted. I agree those stores were too high priced in your video.

I'm in British Columbia, Canada and our main source for thrift stores is Value Village. Also called Value Village, and sometimes called Savers, in the US. Their prices have always been ridiculously high and they seem to think that they're a department store not a thrift store. I think you're a very fair person, Turner. Yes, sometimes you negotiate a price but you also have accepted lower offers when you resell. It all comes out in the wash. The problem, aside from the high prices, is that stores like Value Village, Savers and Goodwill won't negotiate. You can't make an offer in any of those stores. I enjoy all of your videos but my absolute favourites are the trash picking ones. The joy on your faces when you and Sammie J find "gold" is priceless!

@@I_am_me8560 You're breaking my heart. We don't have any of the stores you mentioned in British Columbia. We do have SA but I refuse to shop there because of their anti-LGBTQ practices. I still go to the VV near my home once in a while. If shoes or boots have odors just put 2-3 unused tea bags in them n leave for no less than 24 hours! The tea bags absorb the smell! Works for smelly feet too! Just add several tea bags in pan poor hot water over them let cool down till you can put your feet in. N soak till water is cold! Helps to fight foot odor. Just have to keep doing it ever so often!

When I was a kid in school in the late 50's, in my small town in Canada, if some family was poor and had to dress their kids from a thrift store, it was really embarrassing for them because the rich people's kids went to the same school and would recognize the clothes the family gave to the store...you really felt for them being teased but now even rich people go to the stores...the thrill of the hunt..I'm glad it has changed but the prices have gone up because the rent on the stores and heat have gone up and wages of the workers too.

Yes, our thrift stores locally are checking ebay prices that are listed not sold & marking the price as the listed price. It’s impossible for them to look up every item so sometimes you can find some gems. I normally go on half off day or a certain color day for my items. In regards to flipping an item for more than you paid, I don’t see a problem with it. You paid the agreed price for the item and you sell it to someone that is willing to pay for what you are asking or you both agree with a price. Also, sometimes you find an item that someone has been looking for and they are so happy that you have it. Recently that happened to my husband & I, we found a fishing rod that our buyer has been looking for for over two years & was so happy that we had it. It brought special memories back to him & made his day so happy. He kept on telling us thank you for finding & selling this. It was such a special moment for all of us. Love & hugs ❤️😻

Hey Tucker, I feel you. RESPECT!! It feels as though you may be exploiting the system of buying and reselling, but you aren't. You are using your time and education to find things that you can flip for a small profit to pay your bills. Do you know who is REALLY exploiting the second hand market? Places like Goodwill who get their items for free and resell them at a high profit, and the other second-hand shops who pay 0.10 cents on the dollar but sell items for 75% of retail or higher. As far as trash picking goes, I refer back to one of my first comments to you about how you and Sammi are urban heroes for rescuing things that would otherwise be going to the landfill and then making them useful. This helps the environment, the community, society, and gives you a little $$ to pay your bills. It's a win all around. Keep up the great work!! A shop i was in the other week had a plane unbranded corduroy jacket priced at £30 like who's going to buy that at that price . And had a rail with £50 jumpers on , average person isn't gunna go and buy a £50 jumper from a charity shop . Nice vid guys .

Nice to see you buying your own clothes Tucker. My husband refuses to go shopping and then complains at the clothing I buy him. Go figure !. I honesty stopped shopping for him for about 5 years and he was literally walking around in rags. 😆.
I also find the trick to successful Thrift Store shopping is to find the one item that everyone has overlooked. I walk past all the over priced items. I'm banking on the fact that the people who price stuff, don't always get it right. My best buy was paying $45 for a 1970's Lava vase in the rare fluro green that was worth 10x more than I paid for it.

I would not refer to extracting goods from others' discarded items as "trash picking". Trash is coffee grounds, tissue papers, egg shells, banana peels, or items non-useable beyond composting.
-What you do is salvage worthy goods to find a re-purpose for rehousing and re-use and lessen the landfill burden. Eventually, everything gets tossed and extending the life of goods is a good thing. Keep on Salvaging!

Turner, I agree with you on all the points you mentioned at the end of your video. I'm your parents age, and in my lifetime I've seen so many changes... most not good. Slowly our Holiday traditions are being changed or taken away. I had a wonderful childhood of Holiday memories celebrated in school, now it's totally different in the school systems. Home schooling is the way to go,something you will face as Finn gets to be of school age. I love your mind set and wish all people lived by this simple creed. Looking forward to your next video, can't wait to see Finn's Halloween costume ! Happy Halloween...BOO ! Cindy

I get it. I thrift but tend to thrift for myself in hopes that I can sell it for its value one day. But I am also looking for a replacement business. That’s what most are doing looking for easier income. So it’s going crazy.

Love this video! Sammi looks gorgeous and so does FM 😊…I especially liked the your venting at the end. I have a small group of customers that I’ve been able to acquire though selling online, now I basically buy for them and it is (or was) so much easier, especially with fees cause it’s now one on one. But the problem now is that 3 or 4 out of the 5 of them want the items at the same prices that I charged three or four years ago…so I’m seriously wondering how to continue this side project I’ve had for nearly six years now. I guess I just have to be honest and if they stay with me, they stay. If not…I might take a break from it for awhile. The economy has much to do with the prices. People just want a good deal and these places are price gouging! Love the video! Happy Halloween!!!🎃🎃🎃❤🎃❤🎃🙀

Our thrift stores are pricey goodwill has been reselling online for a long time if people donate an expensive item its sent away to be sold online and at the store they sell the rest for a high price, I have found the same product at the store cheaper than goodwill that's crazy. But if you have a goodwill outlet AKA the bins you can find great stuff and pay per pound for items. I was at the goodwill and I picked up a fox about 2 feet tall really nice suddenly the manager was after me and said that fox was priced wrong too low a mistake by one of the workers I said it's in my cart so you have to honor the price that was crazy 🤪

Watching back when you and Sammi J got together (could you possibly make a Playlist of your wonderful romance from the start?) Came to this video and watched the end a couple of times. The 'Tucker thinking' portion needs to be portioned out and shared again and again. It's important, timely (and timeless) and much needed for everyone to hear. ❤❤❤
You're a very special person, Tucker. Thank you for sharing your life and your thoughts.

Gone are the days when you could get a good deal at second hand stores. Clothing used to be 25 cents up to a couple of dollars, now it's getting hard to afford used clothes. I have been going to these places for 50 years, and you are right ..... they have changed, and not for the better !

Totally agree with you about thrifting.....we have a Red White and Blue by us in Hamilton, NJ and they have become very expensive, still fun to cruise thru, but no real bargains,,,,nothing like scoring a great piece of clothing for an awesome price....but there are still some reasonable thrift store around you just have to look for them...what a great transaction with the nice gentlemen at the end of the video, he seems very happy with his buy and you got to chat with him....Happy Halloween guys, enjoy your night.....hope you dress Finn up for the holiday...

I understand exactly what you were talking about. As long as the "new people" who have started the thrifting lifestyle are pay the high prices, nothing is going to change. As for going to a flea market or yard sale and asking if they would take less, no you are not exploiting them. They want to sell their stuff and if they don't they are either going to put it in the garbage or donate it to a thrift store. So if they agree to a lower price, it's because they would rather get something instead of nothing. So don't beat yourself up over that. Quite honestly, the world has changed and it will never go back to the way it was. So we have to change with it. There is no other option. We had a chance and we blew it. If you know, you know.

Love the “rant” at the end very real talking the thrift shops r overpriced; but so isn’t r economical: to run they’re shops gauged by utilities or taxes, and who pays for it we the consumers unfortunately a victim of humanity.
