A friend of mine told me that when her father died she disposed of an entire garage full of video games. She told me that it took her an entire years worth of garbage collection to get rid of it and she also said that most of it was still sealed. I thought she was lying but other family members confirmed it. I was like like you never thought to even post ads to sell the games? Her response was "I just never thought this junk was worth anything". I was purely mortified.

MJR got a super quick swoop through of my collection a while back in a private video invitation so he can attest that it is substantial. It'll be appreciated and live on through my step-son. May have been 3 years ago, but remains a very good point any collector (or hobbyist where the items and tools themselves have collectable value, such as model railways etc), such as comics, books etc. A good first step is ensuring your family knos how much the collection means to you and suitable sources to go to to get help and advice on correct disposal (ie, other collectors rather than the bin!).
Likely lots of rare books, games and other things just get thrown out due to family not understanding of caring what it is.

I absolutely love you metal Jesus, you are what keeps TH-cam vibrant and full of just childhood enthusiasm and I can feel that you are a good person at heart and don't ever conform to what's considered "cool" to others because that's them and besides most people don't know that it's being kind and generous and lighthearted that's the cool stuff, I mean you of all people must be able to relate to the archetype of the hero! For instance the hero stands up for the weak and sick and unfortunate he doesn't exploit that for his own gain. But all too often is that the case in this world so thank you for being an example, thank you for who you are and most of all thank you for all the work you must put into this. Sincerest //Johan

i used to work for a company that ran housing and did like the gardening and stuff for elderly people. Once an old man died who had no family and stuff and a group of about 10 people had to literally empty his house into one of those giant walk in skips. The thing was this guy was a hoarder of vinyl records and was also a games collector of old games/computers like Amigas, amstrad, spectrums them kind of games. The rooms were stacked with gaming magazines from the 80s and 90s, computers and games and we literally had to skip them all to get the job done within about 5 hours. The only thing I managed to take from the lot was a copy of the original street fighter for the Amiga. I did have a box of stuff but they got lost somewhere in transit. i did put on a local site like gumtree called freecycle pleading with people to go and help themselves before it got destroyed further but i don't know if anyone ever went. I still angers me to this day that i couldn't do a thing to save a house full of the things i love.

This is maybe one of the hardest questions for every collector. And also maybe a reason for a Collector to even start a family...
*The other one would be “what would you do if your collection was desroyed, e.g. in a fire“*
We find ourselves thinking about this from time to time, but we struggle to find the answers amd hope we have still a lot of time before the event...

I have contemplated this question quite a bit with my Killer Instinct collection. My son has also expressed interest in preserving and continuing to collect and preserve. But as of right now he doesn't really understand the importance, scope and financial responsibility of the collection. So I have 2 backups. 1. My wife takes care of it until my son is old enough to properly take care of it. 2. Donate it to a video game museum.

My grandfather was a hoarder. It took 2 full years to clean out my his house when he passed away. My dad is a total hoarder too. Neither for games but they just were the type of people who never threw out or got rid of ANYTHING. I was in high school at the time and my dad made me help him so I lost all my weekends for those 2 years which totally sucked. I know it will take just as long to go through my dad's stuff when that day comes. This is why I've never collected video games or anything else physically. I'm digital for life and it won't put my children or other immediate family members through that.

John Hancock's collection should remain a museum years after now with aid of all of his friends and people should be able to access a personal video review of every single game in the collection.
Access to physical copies must be supervised and usage of such games must be played rarely.

Great video!!! Been a subscriber for about a year and watch every video. What's interesting about that is I don't play or collect video games. My personal passion is comic books- I love the way your channel speaks passionately about collecting and the importance of it. It's weird that you've said things that hit home that I've heard 10 times before in comic collector videos but I was to busy "shopping" the backgroundto hear it. Keep doing videos that emphasize the legacy and importance of collecting something that "normal" people just don't understand

Metal and the immortal one, have either of you guys considered setting up virtual tours of your game collections and game rooms, like open houses have where the user point and click and walk around the room and can see what is on your shelf's? Actually a conglomerate of you tubers setting up a website with that would be awesome.

John hancock even has that vibe to him. This is a guy ive never met and i feel like if i left my walet in a room with him i wouldnt have to worry about anything getting taken.
Thats one hell of a vibe immortal

Hey John, I think it'd be a great idea if it was an actual virtual museum!!! Like a website with a 360° Camera display room where a visitor can explore the room freely and check the rare collection of games from the past.

If I were to die, I'm sure my wife would sell every last one of them.
probably Dirt cheap and well below Ebay pricing just to get rid of them.

I cannot stress enough the importance of preservation and having a will! My dad passed away last year with a house full of old broadcasting/engineering equipment that I've had to move out of state to my house because he had no will and stopped taking to anyone. I've had lots of people beg me to just simply not throw these things away even though to me they have no worth (they aren't my dad) and the response was surprising. A lot of people from our generation just throw out recordings, reel to reel tapes, cassettes, VHS tapes, games, vintage electronics, etc by the box full when our family dies. If you ever have the opportunity to find a collector in this situation, reach out to them! And I wish you the best of luck!

I love how we live in a time when you are you're friends have plans for our most treasured items that your parents would almost consider junk. I have a massive instrument collection and I want one in the local museum, each of my guitar playing buddies to pick one and the rest donated to a good organization

I am new on your channel and retrieve all videos. I like it very much! I have to answer this video in any case. My collection is not nearly as big as yours or John's. Nevertheless, I had to think about what happens if I die prematurely. I see the same emotions that I had with both of you. True collectors. Thanks for your videos. It's a pleasure to watch the videos. I am from Germany so please excuse me if my English is not so good.P.S. I´m a big metal freak, too. Nearly 30 years now. Great games, great music.

I have actually given this a lot of thought! I came up with a plan for my best friend to be the recipient of the entire collection. She is not a gamer nor a collector, so her instructions are to sell the collection on eBay to thoroughly-vetted collectors. Plan B, everything will go to a gaming museum or non-profit to do with as they see fit.

i have a solution. it is called "operation mariana". but a shipping container (similar to those where imported goods are used in the piers); put all my belonging in there - vidya, car/s, etc. get it waterproof, have it dumped over the mariana trench.

Mid life crisis someone? Just joking, nice to see this aspect of yours and answering such a tough question. Just reminded us that more than a youtuber, he's a regular person just like me or everyone who commented this video. And to answer that question, if I'd had a big collection like these guys I'd go with John's answer, all to my kids and family. Greetings from Guayaquil, Ecuador.
