    Thank you for the very honest and very fair review of my hack! It was done at a time where I had very little game design experience (not like I'm a professional now). I'm glad to see it's still being enjoyed this long ago. I understand the project isn't going to be enjoyed by everyone and it's really rough around the edges. I hope people have some interest in the spiritual success, "Koopa Kingdom Escape" that I've been working on over the past 2 years.

      I just got my own NES Cartridge so I can play it on the original hardware, and I gotta say it is my favorite SMB 3 Hack so far! I haven't found all the keys yet, but I've enjoyed all the levels and especially the wand powerup.
      great work and kudos to you

      ***** Eh, depends on the creativity of the creator on how those colors get used. There's a palette of 54 or so, although granted certain tints aren't present and there's pretty strict restrictions on how to allocate and use them. But nonetheless, an NES game can be made beautiful. I think the dull colors of Mario Adventure probably have a lot to do with the weather gimmicks, enemies, and custom power-ups that sort of limited what the palettes could be used for. Or maybe he just really wanted it to look that way, I dunno.

    Mike, I'm glad to see you're showing great improvements as a reviewer. You're moving away from simply "giving an opinion" to actually "describing the product" so that the reader/listener can make his/her own mind about whether they would like it or not (which is what a professional reviewer is supposed to do).
    Some subjectiveness still shines through, on occasions, but you're so much better overall that I can't really complaint. Keep it up. Looking forward to see your future reviews now.

    Mike, I respect your judgement on these matters, but I've noticed that that you seem to have a rather elitist attitude regarding the difficulty of games. This might be due to us being gamers of different generations but, think about it, is having no checkpoints fun? Is constantly failing at a level, having to repeat it again and again from the start, really super fun for people? Games should have the option to save midway through so as to make it, you know, fun? Rather than hole-in-door punchingly hard. It just makes me not want to play anymore and, contrary to popular opinion, is not all the more satisfying at the end. Sorry, ranting...

    • @pollo20x6
      @pollo20x6 10 ปีที่แล้ว +60

      I believe it is satisfying when there are less check points in some cases. I was born in 92, so that's a whole decade away from Mike's time. It might be preference, but I also believe that check points have spoiled some gamers. Gamers now complain when there aren't enough check points when the case might be that there are too many check points and the gamer is so spoiled, they think they need more help. Like I said, its all preference. Unlike Mike, I don't think those "guides" that beat the level for you or make you invincible the whole level are bad. If that's how someone wants to beat the game, then by all means, let the game do the work. But I do think gamers don't appreciate the help found in games now and I consider that being spoiled.

    • @jeffsmith6083
      @jeffsmith6083 10 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      You get a better sense of accomplishment (like Mike said) after beating a more difficult game. It's not a game for those kids who just play a game to beat it. Games like this are what prove who the gamers really are.

    • @nobel11
      @nobel11 10 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      pollo20x6 Ok, spoiling players is an issue. There's a fine line between appropriate and patronising difficultly. For some, risk is a motivator, I guess. Although, the idea that all could be lost at one miss-timed jump, does not appeal to me. Auto saves, for example, are great news because I'm not constantly stressed as I know that even if I fuck up, I can just pick it straight up again where I left off. This allows me to loosen up and enjoy myself playing the game and appreciate it more, which is kinda the point. Who wants to be stressed playing Mario, anyway? (Incidentally, I was also born in '92.)

    • @ConnerCJ2012
      @ConnerCJ2012 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I kinda agree on that. It might be fine for fans who want a bigger challenge, and they still show a lot of polish regardless, but we rarely ever got a ROM-hack that actually features difficulty reminiscent of that of an official Nintendo title. I don't know what the fascination is that fans have towards making frustrating levels and fangames. The same goes for the custom stages in Mario Maker.

      Cinemassacre Well a "hack" is more commonly associated with malicious intent whereas a mod is just that, a modification for an existing program. I guess you could call it either one though, But additional levels, enemies, items, characters and so forth is usually referred to as a mod in the gaming community.

    • @paulgraves1392
      @paulgraves1392 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cinemassacre
      Mods and hacks are not one and the same. A hack is an ingenius way of solving a problem. A mod is the changes that the hack allows the person to make. In this instance, someone wants to make a new Mario game that can run on the NES using graphics from Super Mario Bros. 3.
      The problem is that the data in the Super Mario Bros 3 cartridge has already been processed into binary. The person would then develop a hack to figure out what the binary means and how it can be changed. Once binary is understood or converted into a human readable form, then the modding can begin.

    • @XinBiDe

      NES only supports RF and Composite. Composite is known for having low image quality. RF is even worse. That's actually not even the problem with this video. It's just that the game looks depressing and Mike mentioned that 3:16.

      ***** NES games look absolutely terrible that way. It's better in Mike's video. I just don't like seeing the pixels. The bluriness of the original NES gave an illusion of a higher resolution. You just have to play on a CRT with composite to see what I'm talking about.

      9Y0 There's actually a difference. Modding is legal, as it's done with permission from the developer- usually because a game's developer made it legal for anyone to mod their game. Examples include games like Half-Life or Minecraft. Hacking is illegal, as it's done without permission from the developer- thus, an infringement of copyright. The most commonly hacked games would probably be the classic Mario games.

The reason the beanstalk stopped growing is because you hit another block shortly after hitting the beanstalk block. Next time you hit a beanstalk, wait a few seconds to let it grow up all the way before you hit anymore blocks that may be nearby.

    I guess us gamers who grew up with Nintendo and Sega back in the day, I guess somehow we wished we had stronger challenges towards our classic games. My wish is to have a difficult level on Super Mario RPG for the SNES. Don't get wrong, I love that game, but think about it, would it be nice to have a harder difficulty when you start a new game, or choose a challenge level? (You don't have to agree with me, I am just posting my opinion)

  • @leonkenedy2988
    @leonkenedy2988 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You see MIKE, this is the reason why the original mario 2 in japan wasnt release in America. Because the game is toooo hard for the american like us. Mario adventure wasnt even that hard its just added more challenge for the mario fan and other gamer to experience that mario isnt all about jumping your way through the entire level like an idiot. Original mario 2 is way more harder then this game, Japan mario 2 will make you angry very fast. Dont get me wrong mario is a great franchise and game but what Mike said in this video just doesnt cut it for me( some part that is).

    the deal with the vine can actually happen in the original smb3, what happened was you hit a "?" block while the vine was growing and it canceled it out. the animation of what ever you hit is what stopped the vine, if you go to world 3-4 in smb3 you can do the same thing with the lives near the end, and the same thing with 5-1 in the water area

    Great video. I didn't even know this existed. For a sense of nostalgic purpose, a friend of mine recently (read: within the last year) picked up a generic NES-y machine, and a copy of Mario 3 to play, and between my experience with the game, and the persistence of said friend and his girlfriend, we eventually managed to beat the game together, something I'd never done without an emulator and save states, and that they'd never done period. I would LOVE to pop this hack in and start up the next great gauntlet with those friends. I bet we'd scream and shout and swear and drink and smoke until we go to the end a month later.

    I've seen a lot of hacks and home brew games. How many of these are available on an actual cartridge or disc? Are they expensive? And can these people use their skills to take crappy games and make them better? Most of the movie based games should be hacked to improve quality. And also; I would like to see 8-bit and 16-bit home brew games based on modern movies and TV shows. Breaking Bad for the NES? I'd love to see that! It could incorporate the zapper gun in certain levels.
