Please do not come to SC with the mindset of " this is how we do things in Ohio, New York, New Jersey or any where else". We have things working just fine and do not need your help or running for public office to change things. Remember one important saying, if you are not happy here, Delta is ready when you are. I'm sure you won't have a problem finding a ride to the airport

I knew a lady who moved here from Michigan. All she did was complain about the accent, culture and how awful her life was living in Tennessee. BUT ! she wouldn't move back. I got sick of the constant complaining and drivel so I told her she should move back if it was so horrible; I never heard her say anything else.

Oregon transplant here. If you're coming from the west coast, you need to be prepared for the giant bugs. I've learned to live with the spiders big as my hand, as long as they stay outside, but the roaches still make me scream in terror as I'm squashing them. Don't use spray on the roaches. The bastards fly and will follow the spray and hit you in the face.

@@brandongaronteam Ah yes! Our company (Oakwood Apts) also had a complex in Van Nuys, and Candy Cane Lane was famous every Christmas. At Dodger Stadium, they always had a Santa Clarity Nignt each year. I went to 30+ Dodger games in 1985 & 1986, including the 6 games of NLCS in both LA & STL. That Jack Clark HR in game 6 pretty much destroyed the career of Tom Neidenfuer, the great reliever (It came one game after he gave up the GW HR to Ozzie Smith in STL, so his confidence was shot!). I was also in Anaheim to watch my Red Sox beat the Angels in 1986, with the famous 3-run HR - with the Angels one out from winning the pennant. They went on to lose that game in extra innings and the next 2 in Boston - and did not get to the WS until 2002. I was sitting deep along the 3B line, so pretty close to where Dave Henderson's HR went out.

One of the things I've hated all my life is when Yankees move down South and all you hear from them is how great it is up North. We all feel you should have stayed there. Most of us will be nice about it to your face, but behind your back, we are saying, "Bless their hearts, they must be some homesick. Wish those damned Yankees would go back from whence they came." We really mean it, seriously.
While I'm at it, remember when you are driving in the South, it is the South...not the North. Don't blow your horn when the lights turn green. We could be waiting for a log truck or one of you damn Yankees to get through the intersection. Just breathe and relax. You're not in Massachusetts or New York anymore, but we can give you directions.

In NC the property tax goes to funding the police departments, first responders, fire departments. But, the registration fee itself was only $38. So, the other $152.00 is tax. In Florida, I had a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom condo. Property taxes $3500 a year, $4000 a year hoa fees, home insurance $2100 a year. We lived in Chapin for two years, and everything Brandon said is spot on. The only two things I would add are: If someone says, "Well bless your heart", they are most likely calling you an idiot in the most genteel way. Secondly, be leery of getting the "Yankee discount". Some natives don't like outsiders and will try to take advantage of you. I went to a car repair shop for a burnt out headlight. How convenient that my car "died" when the mechanic pulled it into the shop. I was told I needed a rebuilt starter. When I started to protest, I was told they had already pulled the bad part, but they would be glad to put it back in and have me call a tow truck to move it elsewhere. Another time, my husband's co-worker told him that the only difference between a "Yankee" and a "damn Yankee" is that the first one comes for a visit and the second one comes to stay. But the majority of Southerners are friendly and welcoming.

I moved here from Michigan. The thing about South Carolina is the contractors. You schedule to get your windows replaced for Monday, to the contractor it could mean Any time that week. I had our roof done by a contractor who made me wait weeks until I demanded my deposit back and to call in another contractor. Then I pulled up I to my drive and nearly ran into several pallets of shingles the next day.

The friendliness of the South comes with a trade-off - there is not the urgency with getting jobs done. You will find the same thing in Mexico and the southern European countries. It is an adjustment that new emigres have to adapt to. It can be frustrating at first, but it teaches you to slow your pace down. This is the land of people enjoying conversation on the porch with some lemonade or sweet tea (I prefer unsweet), and not rushing to get on some doggone LA or Bay Area freeway! I have experienced both, and the character of your typical South Carolinian is LIGHT YEARS BETTER than a Californian, who would sell your mother down the river to make an extra buck! I spent 13 years there - north & south. Loved the weather and fabulous scenery, but did not think much of the people, and now the loons have completely destroyed the state!

What you will miss are the great lakes, as the South does not have those great freshwater lakes - most are created by dams, but places like Keowee, nearby GVL, are pretty nice. And also because there is no State safety inspection on vehicles, you will often see cars and especially pick up trucks riding around on very worn tires.. I was having a flat tire repaired at a tire store one time. I was walking around outside stretching my legs, and I saw the pile of used tires around back of the tire store. It was remarkable how many tires in that pile of hundreds of tires that were showing cords on many tires that the tread was completely worn thru..
