- Morgantown was a snowy mess on Jan. 12, to the point where many West Virginia basketball fans were forced to walk to the Coliseum to see the team take down No. 1 Kansas. Among those who couldn't make it was the person scheduled to sing the Star-Spangled Banner that night prior to tipoff.
So Carlton Smith, working the game as a University Police Officer, answered the call. A former Mountaineer Idol, an American Idol contestant, and a WVU graduate, Smith stepped in to sing that night's National Anthem and set the tone for a special evening for the Old Gold and Blue.

I've got goosebumps listening and I'm not even an American. The anthem's lyrical depth is only emboldened by Carlton Smith's rendition of it. He's an asset to the police force and the country's treasured son.

That was a lovely rendition, restrained and with just the right amount of flourishes. So often people overdo it! Or crack at the lower ORr the upper register-supposedly the anthem is quite a challenge to sing. And I've rarely seen it performed by someone sporting handcuffs and a gun, ha!

Personally never particularly liked the tone of her voice, but that's subjective though, each to their own!.But truth is, she would never be where she is were it not for her looks, as she is merely a adequate singer. How interesting and telling that in Dreamgirls she played Diana Ross, who pushed out the much better singer in The Supremes... "Life imitates art" has never been more true... As obvious as the comparison is, to the casual viewer, and the casting director and producers, surely, I bet it has never ocurred to her. Denial is a wonderful thing.

All I can say is wow!!! Your display was a great and positive influence to the uniform that we dawn. Growing up with the love of music, I loved hearing your voice and seeing how bravely you dawned during your performance wearing the uniform in despite that many shutter when they see us coming. It is great to know and should be rewarding for you that there is many that still have faith in our law enforcement. We, law enforcement, should follow your stance in public appearances to show our true being, to display the love of our country and even more our faith in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

OTOH, there is also a clip of Whitney (WHITNEY!) singing the anthem-wearing that track suit and a matching head band, how adorbs-in what is probably the most gut wrenching, moving, beautiful, utterly charming rendition of the Star Spangled Banner of all time. And an educated guess-I'd bet money on it-says that THAT is the single one performance of the anthem that the great majority of Americans remember above all.
And now I'm going to watch that Top 10 Fails vid... (And I'll probably hate myself a little while doing it. :D )

Or even the idiot who tackled tennis pro James Blake rather than approaching him and asking for ID? Remember that cop had plenty of backup nearby, they were uncertain of the identity of the suspect, it was a non violent crime. Later we learn the hyper aggressive cop neglected to file required incident reports AND he has a history of excessive force charges though he is relatively new to the force. Not everyone is meant to be a cop...we learned that the guy who shot and killed a 12 year in Cleveland should never have been hired due to washing out of another local force for being unstable under pressure and around GUNS.

This was just about the best version I ever heard. He's amazing and as others have said he just sang instead of using it as a chance to show off.
But what I find odd as a European is that at events like this in Europe the national anthem is usually an opportunity for the crowd to all sing together as a communal experience. In America you seem to just stand quietly and listen to a performance.
