    A $10,000 flight from Portland to Tokyo in economy is a ridiculous price and yes, used to manipulate routes and bookings. Shame, Shame Delta. Your better than that, and your customers deserve better as well.

      Likely JFK another LAX depart and or ATL. PDX isn't a hub for them so probably not a lot of demand for them on the route.

    I think they should have allowed all airlines that fly to Haneda to switch just one route, because business is about adapting and if one rout doesnt work they should be able to file for a route switch.
    United sounded salty all the other airlines agreed.

    I'm against the concept of the treaty that specifies the number of flights between nations and the government being involved in allocating the slots....but I understand it needs to be done. If the capacity of Haneda were left to the free market Japan would not be have access to the necessary destinations in the world.
    If the airlines were able to change departure cities to use their slots there would be nothing stopping all airlines from ending service in one of more cities. There also would be no means to prevent anticompetitive behavior.
    Airlines would be able to move routes to disrupt the pricing and then raise pricing when the existing airline gives up and moves. There are many ways this can disruptive to the entire US aviation system.
    Also, Delta is already the largest beneficiary of the rules in place. If they don't want to operate the routes they have been allocated, they need to be available to others.
    Delta has been very profitable for years because of good business decisions that have played out well. This seems to be an extreme request to keep year over year results appearing positive. They need to accept just being very profitable instead of seeking to be even more profitable continuously.

    • @magical_catgirl
      @magical_catgirl ปีที่แล้ว

      This isn't the first time Delta has made "extreme requests" regarding slots at Haneda.
      When Haneda reopened to long haul flights in 2013, US airlines got 4 night slots (arrive and depart HND between 2200 and 0600). Due to flight times and time zones, these meant that departure/arrival times on the US end were between 11pm and 4am, which lead to the routes failing.
      At the time, Delta had a hub at Narita which they got from Northwest. Delta demanded enough day slots at Haneda to move the Narita hub. They of course didn't get that and later closed the Narita hub.
      After new taxiways and an extension to the international terminal, there was a new slot allocation at Haneda in 2016. The US handed back 3 of the night slots and gained 5 day slots.
      This last round of allocations in 2019 came about from changes to the airspace around Tokyo with the US airforce handing back control of the airspace around the Yokota airforce base allowed 50 new daily long haul day flights. 24 of those were allocated to US flights (12 for US airlines).
      During the 2013-2016 night slot only period, Delta moved their US port 3 times. They cancelled flights from Seattle and Detroit before using LA. (Though American also moved their flight during that same period from JFK to LAX)
      When the US got day slots in 2016, the 4 existing flights were converted to day flights and the 5th slot was given to Delta for flights from MSP while Hawaiian got the new night slot.

    Operate the flights or lose the slots

    • @drwombat
      @drwombat ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I mean if it's not profitable why not just lose it? They're already doing their best to so with the exorbitant prices... Why would losing it be such a bad thing? Sounds like they simply don't want to give up the slot unless they get a more favorable route?

  • @sho1715

    Air ticket price on Transpacific flights including Japan is now unprecedentedly expensive!!! I don't understand the Delta's logic.
    There are almost no codeshare flights between Delta and other Skyteam members (I guess Vietnam Airlines is the only exception) between Tokyo/Haneda and other Asian cities. Delta should work harder to increase connecting passengers from Haneda to Asia.

      @@drwombat Sorry I’m a Japanese. A codeshare agreement, also known simply as codeshare, is a business arrangement, common in the aviation industry, in which two or more airlines publish and market the same flight under their own airline designator and flight number (the "airline flight code") as part of their published timetable or schedule.

      Due to US-Japan arrangement, Delta cannot allocate its slots to other US cities, which makes Delta hard to maintain Haneda slots. Delta honestly wants to allocate Portland flight to JFK, I guess. I don't understand why Delta initially picked up Portland instead of lucrative JFK flight.
