    You might think of yourself as a customer of TH-cam as you watch this video.
    You think of yourself as the customer of all these products you use daily.
    For thousands and thousands of years, humans have been consumers: we traded, we purchased…
    And we think of ourselves as customers of these free products, but - let me break the bubble for you, you are not a customer.
    You’re the product.
    If this product you are using is made by a for-profit company, and none of your money goes to that company- that means they have another customer, and you are just the product.
    For the first time in humanity’s history, we’ve become the products. In the era of the internet, people's data is a valuable asset that companies and even governments are willing to pay good money for, and tech companies figured out the business model to make it happen.

    Well, unless you have Premium. So the task is more complicated than that. You could be both consumer (for Premium business) and customer (for other business branches).

    I've run fb ads and I've told ppl how wild it is that you can target an exact person and type or ppl almost, but also the amount of information they allow any old DIY advertiser to collect. You can almost pin point who and where each person is interacting from if you dig deep enough. I can only imagine the kinds of information they collect that we can't 😬😬

  • @Solisus
    @Solisus ปีที่แล้ว +74

    Unfortunately, you're a bit wrong about how targeting works on Facebook and other big social platforms. The iOS changes really hit it hard. Tracking has become extremely difficult with just the pixel. Now, Facebook needs to use an S2S connection and Conversion API to get aggregated conversions. It's not as accurate as it used to be. Also, interest-based targeting is no longer as good since Facebook is still doing a lot of guesswork. The most advanced product Facebook offers right now is "Advantage+" campaigns. Here, you can ONLY choose the country to target - no age, no audience, nothing. Facebook's algorithm is doing all the work to try and find your audience, and it can do it for both prospecting and retargeting campaigns. Apple forever changed advertising with their privacy update. As someone with 8 years of experience in a very high-spending B2C environment, trust me bro.

      @Solisus ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@hiphopvirgins4552 Globally yes, but in US, most users are from iPhone. Plus usually if client is selling luxary products, I specifically target iOS users as they are higher likely to convert. Now I have to say that 90% of business I do is related to US consumers so I can't say with certainly how it's done globally but targeting will become harder even for Android users as google is pushing similar privacy update this year. Also Apple is making it even harder for advertisers because they'll soon push and update which only allows cookies to last 7 days, so 28 day attribution is as good as dead.

    "But whoever turns away from My Reminder will certainly have a miserable life,1 then We will raise them up blind on the Day of Judgment. They will cry, “My Lord! Why have you raised me up blind, although I used to see?. Allah will respond, “It is so, just as Our revelations came to you and you neglected them, so Today you are neglected. This is how We reward whoever transgresses and does not believe in the revelations of their Lord. And the punishment of the Hereafter is far more severe and more lasting''.

      I'm in a different camp here. I think it's a misnomer to think that they're "collecting" this information.
      Think of it more like they are "deducing" this information. So if you walked up to me wearing a Rolex watch vs MVMT watch (no judgment). Is it ok to make some assumptions as to your socio economic hierarchy?
      This then begs other questions as to what are we allowed to deduce, and then can you promise that you won't make deductions(or decisions) that might have future consequences.
      I'm on the camp of let them do it, a different service will emerge that won't do this and we'll vote with our usage and wallets.

    quick note here - you're not your digital representation =).
    For example, I like that Google could "compare" "your" taste with the choice of restaurants on the map. But in my case - I choose not for myself, but for my wife as well, so it's just irrelevant.
    And that applies to other aspects of life as well. So I find it non-intrusive if you control what you share =).
    For the platforms themselves - THAT'S ABSOLUTE TRUE, Not all platforms are equal in storing/handling information and preserving GDPR.

    • @PvtAnonymous
      @PvtAnonymous ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not really getting where you're going with this. As in: you think Google doesn't know that? Quick story time:
      One day my girlfriend wrote me on iMessage that her colleague's mother passed away who I also know personally, so I decided to write to her. After the usual "my condolences" message, actually just hours after, without talking about anything funeral related and my gf not even getting home (so same Wi-Fi is not the condition here), I received an ad on Google Maps for a funeral home. Now for the plot twist: I was not even using my iPhone as my main device at that time. And I opened Google Maps on my main device. My main device was running CalyxOS. A degoogled operating system with huge focus on privacy. I don't need to tell you that I wasn't ever signed in with my Google account on that phone. But the mere fact that I was on the same Wi-Fi as my iPhone was enough for Google to figure out that this phone belonged to me. How did they know what I wrote in iMessage? That's up for debate, as I don't know.
      So the tl;dr of this: don't even think you can outsmart Google with their shier dedication to find out everything about you and use that info to place some creepy ads everywhere you go.

    • @sergeymatpoc
      @sergeymatpoc ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PvtAnonymous does Google know that I choose not only for myself? No, it doesn't. It's much more stupid than you think.
      Yes, such things as tracking and sound/voice recording are real, but you can (almost) completely disable it. I haven't seen ANY targeted ADs for years, only ones related to my previous searches (like, if I searched for GPU in eBay I had recommendations based on that search, and that's the most enterprises could get).
      Let me state that clear. You decide what you share and what will be used for targeting. I choose not to share anything except for necessary cookies, the ones which save your login token for example. It'll be annoying to fill in passwords every time on all websites.
      One more example - people complain much about spam in their mailboxes. But for unknown to me reasons they couldn't click on "unsubscribe" button in the bottom of unnecessary e-mails.
      So my advice - just don't agree with default cookies settings, disable ad targeting and disable tracking if you don't want to be tracked.
      Yes, it won't remove all tracking, but at least it'll be hidden, and won't impact your search results and recommendations.
      About "how did they know..." - depends on privacy settings (again). And... Don't take that as advice, that's only my position. I don't believe Apple (I have only ipad pro at home, which my wife uses as an artist) and any "smart helpers" like Alexa, Cortana etc. I don't believe Google (Pixel in particular), but use search, maps and mail. That's basically it.
      And, again, I live the ordinary life. But I don't receive any kind of recommendations being shared between apps. It'll be really annoying for me, I buy some stuff for my wife very frequently (for example, flight tickets and accommodation). And it'll be crazy if I had to deal with all the related spam I don't care about. I just bought what I had to, and I have nothing else to spend money for.
      I'll repeat. I have no targeted ADs.

    • @PvtAnonymous
      @PvtAnonymous ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sergeymatpoc well, maybe you didn't get my expertise in the field of privacy and security. I run Linux as my main desktop OS. I run Graphene on my phone. I selfhost my own Nextcloud, Bitwarden, Snapdrop, my own notes, contacts, calendars and some more. I don't use Google search. I use mainly FOSS software. I run a PiHole on my network. I know my stuff. And rest assured, my "privacy" settings are all in check. The stuff Google collects can't be disabled ever. My example doesn't even fall in the category of targeted ads. Because it would not be possible according to their own privacy policy or ToS. Just the proximity of your phone next to your wife's is enough to determine such choices. The techniques used are way more sophisticated than simple cookie tracking. Again, if you think you can outsmart Google, you're just plain wrong.
