  • On the final night of the Interdominion carnival, Tuapeka Knight, having just his third career start showed why he would end up as the top juvenile of the season with this brilliant win over Starship and Meadow King.
His winning time of 2:33.51 from a stand for the 2000 metre journey was a New Zealand record. The leaders had covered the opening mile in 2:4.00 and 58.7 was the time for the final 800 metres.
Tuapeka Knight raced ten times during the season, winning nine from nine and pacing three New Zealand records in the process, until his surprise failure at Alexandra Park when he choked and did not complete the journey. $164,005 went into the bank for the season.

Tuapeka Knight was indeed a champion juvenile pacer. Looking at this footage he looks like a late 3yo with such a powerful build, reminds me a lot of Christian Cullen as a 2yo......
Interesting to note, the 2nd horse in this Starship finished 2nd to Tuapeka Knight on 8 different occasions as a 2yo, Ian Cameron the driver of Starship must have been sick of the sight of Tuapeka Knight by seasons end.
